My sister and I stayed here in early January for a short 2-night holiday. Room was very basic, only one outlet, and my sister and I joked how the room “smelled like throw up.” All that aside, the location is very good and it fulfilled its purpose. We went to pay for our stay on the second night as we were leaving very early the next morning. We went to reception and spoke with the owner saying we needed to pay. He said “how much?” - we were very confused as he should have our booking info in the system to tell us how much, not the other way around. We told him our room number. He told us if we paid in cash he would give us a discount. I’ve lived and worked in Australia long enough to know that lots of businesses ask for cash so they don’t have to claim it on taxes. I didn’t think anything of it, we paid in cash, and left the next day. Two weeks later I notice that my credit card has been charged for the full stay. This is the credit card I only use to HOLD bookings, not to pay for anything. I’ve called the establishment multiple times, even spoken with the owner, and he told me he “doesn’t know how to refund.” He said he would bring me the refund in person, never did. He said he would bank transfer me the refund, never has. I spoke with booking.com and they said he claimed he “doesn’t remember” us paying in cash. I’ve been staying in hostels for 10 years all over the world and have never experienced something like this before. I didn’t even think to ask for a receipt because I’ve never been duped like this. It’s been really stressful and time-consuming to try to get my money back. As of now I have still received no part of the refund, after 5 days of waiting for this mystery bank transfer. I will never stay here again and recommend everyone else to get a receipt. Very very shady.

Myself and a friend stayed at the Dunsborough Backpackers Inn for three nights to attend a local event. This backpackers is located literally smack bang in the middle of the town Centre and is a brilliant location for walking to all amenities, shops, food and the beach. On arrival at the establishment we checked in fine, the office staff were lovely and we were given our key. We drove to the car park at the back - there is ample parking on site, and proceeded to our room. We opened the door and were taken aback by what we saw. A bed in the room with one table and chairs and two shelves. Very very stark. Now, I know it’s a backpackers, and I can accept that this is very low budget accommodation for this region. We paid $80 a night for four walls and a bed, and in Dunsborough I guess we should be thankful. Budget friendly accommodation is rare and booked out mostly a year in advance. When I say four walls and a bed that’s literally what I mean. No lamp, only a fluro ceiling light, no fan, a small window, and a filthy rubbish bin. And that’s just the start of the filth. The room was so dirty. I guarantee the floors haven’t been washed recently let alone swept or vacuumed. There was hair on the floor and as you will see in the pictures the floor and the walls are filthy. The bedding seemed very clean, I was scared to look initially but it was clean, although poor quality mattress and the base was torn. The amenities were the same. The bathroom was filthy, and very obviously had not been cleaned at all while we visited. There is mud in the shower stalls and weird brown marks up walls and doors. The toilets were dirty and there was any number of dripping taps and shower heads. The communal kitchen is disgusting. There is food scraps, dirty dishes and rubbish everywhere. Even the cutlery trays and the draws were filthy with remnants of food crusted in everything. The pots and pans were all out on a rack under the bench top and I can only imagine what had been crawling all over them. There is a fridge... with all sorts of abandoned food on its shelves... one chicken nugget, an open tray of burger patties and and number of out of date condiments. There is also a set of pigeon holes with the room numbers on them with as a place to store food. One had a bag of green potatoes in it, another a half used jar of beef stroganoff sauce and a stick of butter. The whole room has a funky odour and I can’t imagine anyone wanting to cook in that kitchen. There is a lounge suite that has ripped cushions and dirty foam hanging out of it and the floor looks completely unwashed all the time. There is a common room which for two of the three days we were there had a bowl of noodles, a mug and half a bottle of Powerade sitting on it.... congealing away, making the room smell. There was a concert on the night of our second day and the accommodation was filled to capacity. The next day when housekeeping went through they may have cleaned the rooms but left all the empty cans and bottles and cigarette butts lying on the pathway that leads from the rooms to the carpark. This stretch too seemed to have no lights working at night which made it feel unsafe. The staff were lovely. Having said that though how could they not see the state of their accommodation. I believe that because they charge so much and they are still booked out during peak season that they just don’t care. They are going to make the money either way. Sad really. Dunsborough is already known to be expensive. I just think this accommodation is a dead set rip off. Just because it’s a backpackers doe not mean it shouldn’t have higher standards than it has. I’ve seen backpackers before and they take pride in their establishments, something that is absolutely lacking here.

Cheap and cheerful but comfy and lived up to it's expectations. Close to the wineries and they provided towels, microwave, kettle and a toaster. Worked out at £70 a night per couple-worth it if on a budget and close to restaurants and shops etc.

A nice place to stay, with a friendly and helpful owner. A little expensive because I was travelling alone, but good value for two people as the price would then be shared. Basically got my own private room - simple but pleasantly cosy. A lovely surprise in fact. Shared bathroom and kitchen facilities - both spotless and well equipped. A good location near shops, coach stop, beach etc. Really enjoyed staying here. A good choice. Would stay again.
