The bed was the best part of our postage stamp size room. It was casually decorated in a mountain theme with antiques past their prime. The bathroom is in desperate need of a fan. The shades were not blackout. The bunkhouse is not connected to the main building and there are four on top of four units with he road side not having balconies. The dogs left in the room on top of us walked around all night as you could hear every step. The fireplaced lobby had furniture that was totally played out in ruin. The bar on property was nice when open. The maid serve was helpful. The in-room frig was small enough for two cans of pop. The place needs some work. The muffins and coffee need some work as hot and plentiful they were not. Two days here was all we could or would take. Location was nice and that is about it.

We stayed at the Highlander this week and had a great experience. I am writing a review because I think a lot of the other reviews I read prior to our trip are not accurate. Our experience was excellent. It's an old house that's been renovated so yes... some of the rooms are small. But they are so well designed with beautiful furnishings and wallpaper to the ceilings. You truly feel like you are in the Scottish highlands at a fun B&B. We found that the rooms were well insulated and weren't bothered by noise. The hotel itself is so well done. The bar and downstairs lounge space are beautiful and peaceful and invite you to relax by the fire and have an afternoon cocktail or game of chess with friends. The staff were very helpful and the entire hotel was very clean. The owner met us and was very nice. Do yourself a favor and stay here.

We ❤️ HMH! We try to visit every few months as this is the place where everything just feels right. We have always stayed in the main house for the convenience of the restaurant and cozy lobby fireplace - the best place to read a good book or just think. Each room has been decorated differently in terms of antiques, furniture, art, wallpaper, lighting. We have a few favorite rooms, but none are disappointing! Staying st HMH feels like you are staying at an old British family friends’s home. It’s delightful and unique!

Tiny room left a lot to be desired.

Restaurant was nice but waiter slipped up and told me lunch sandwiches were all pre-made (are we on an airplane?)

Unfortunately rooms are loud (we were with 2 other couples who complained of the same thing). Lets face it....if you can't sleep it doesn't matter how cute the wallpaper is.

We checked out and moved to another hotel and it was night and day and rate was almost the same.

The Highlander Mountain House is a perfect place to stay for a weekend getaway to Highlands, NC. The hotel is located on Main Street in the middle of town You can walk to all of the shops and restaurants. Victoria was extremely helpful and was an outstanding manager. The breakfast muffins and pastries were yummy! We will definitely return in the near future.

Wife and I stayed here for a long weekend. Charming place; historic and in great condition. Great service, awesome location. King room was spacious and we loved sitting downstairs in front of one of the two crackling fireplaces. Dinner here was also a great treat!

We were so excited for stay here for our anniversary. 3 days before our trip we got a call that our reservation was being cancelled because their system messed up and they were “overbooked.” Considering there were a couple rooms to choose from when we made our reservation, I don’t understand how they could be “overbooked.” We got an “I’m sorry for the inconvenience.” They never returned my email when I reached out trying to figure out what happened. After reading some reviews this isn’t the first time that this has happened…

We enjoyed a two night stay at the Highlander Mountain House. The Inn is located on Main St. walkable to shopping and restaurants. We stayed in a deluxe queen in the Main house. Lovely renovated room and bathroom. The coffee and breakfast muffins were delicious. The common areas are comfortable and so nice to sit by the fire with either coffee or wine and enjoy conversation. The staff is friendly and helpful. Would stay here again if in the area.

I was very excited to stay at HMH after being inside the bar area about 8 months ago and enjoying the space. My boyfriend and I planned a last minute stay here for one night over Memorial Day weekend. Our only option was a queen room and to book was over $300 for one night. I was already aware the rooms were small. I wasn't surprised but just be aware as other reviewers have stated.
We returned to the hotel from dinner on Sunday night at 7:30 pm to find the bar area closed already. It says on the website "bar area open daily 4:30pm-10 pm". I am aware it was a holiday weekend however there was no signage or other communication upon our check-in notifying us of an early close. There were still people in the bar area but we were told specifically all tabs had been closed. That was disappointing to say the least.
After waking up to a really stormy day, we headed downstairs to get a cup of coffee, a pastry, and to sit by the fire in the lobby. 8 am and no fire. We asked the woman at the front desk if we could start it or what needed to be done to get one going. She told us that there was no "fire starter" available and the wood was too fresh to light without some. Another guest down there even offered to start the fire but again, wood wasn't dry enough. The lady at the front (apologies I do not know her name) was nice and apologized and said she had told "them" (I assume management) before the weekend that they were running low on the starter and to replace. Clearly, it had not been replaced. It was cooler, rainy, windy- perfect weather for a fire but alas...
No pastries or any other food was offered. The coffee tasted like it was old and had been reheated to the point of being burnt. It was truly awful and I could only have one sip. Thinking I was being ridiculous, my boyfriend tried his cup. Still awful.
I hate to write this review for a place I was incredibly excited to stay at. I feel like we were extremely misled by the website and their social media. I also wanted to let other potential travelers know what our stay was lacking compared to other reviewers. Again, this one night cost over $300 for us.

We had a fantastic 2 night stay for a wedding weekend in Highlands. The property is perfectly located to walk around and explore the town. Rooms are definitely small but the décor is fun and interesting, with lots of attention to detail. Outdoor tables are perfect for morning coffee, and you can't beat the smell of a fireplace while you enjoy cocktails in the pub. Would definitely stay again!
