Detailed Reviews
Everything was exactly as I expected, excellent communication and directions. The surrounding town and area felt very safe & comfortable. Parking was a breeze. You can walk to everything dinner, coffee, shops, etc. The hotel itself and the room were clean, spotless really, beds comfortable, we didn't use it, but appeared to be a very functional kitchenette (Riverview Suite). There is a lot to admire about the renovations, how the owners worked with the existing architecture to turn the space into such comfortable, inviting rooms. Great experience!

This was our second stay at this hotel and we will be back. The hotel retains some of the features of the old jail in a delightfully funky way that shows a lot of care went into preservation. Our room was huge, comfortable and quiet. Our host, Josh, couldn't have been nicer and his pottery and art are displayed throughout. We stayed 4 nights and enjoyed the ballad singing/dinner one night. There is a lot to do nearby -- white water rafting, hiking, good restaurants with none of the overly crowded and touristy vibe of Asheville.

Just see my prior review. Nothing's changed. And thank goodness. What a gem. The whole town of Marshall is a gem. If you like boutique hotels, creative architecture, picturesque small towns, big rivers, and stepping back in history, you will love this place. Don't overthink it. Just go. But get a suite, not a bunkroom.

Was going on road-trip with my son, who wanted to stay here. Looked at pics online 2 mins after I booked it & didn’t feel safe. Messaged them right away and they refused to give me a full refund. They only refunded me 50% which I feel is so unfair!!

We discovered the Old Marshall Jail Hotel when we met friends for dinner at Zadie's Restaurant, which is on the same property. Josh, a sculptor by trade, artistically and lovingly renovated the place. He gave us a tour and we fell in love with its uniqueness and history. He re-purposed materials from the jail in creative ways that make this property a must see in Marshall even if you don't intend to stay overnight. We chose to stay here in the heart of Western North Carolina in this small town to support local business. And we were glad we did! The hotel is immaculate, very comfortable, the rooms tastefully decorated, and ours had a lovely view of the river. Josh and the rest of the staff are friendly, gracious and accommodating. If you stay, walk 2 minutes up the street have breakfast at Zuma Coffee. Highly recommend!

Josh and Emily Copus, hosts extraordinaire! Our stay at the Old Marshall Jail was an amazing night that I have shared the details with many. The rooms are outstanding in comfort and the attention to detail is bar none. I can’t wait to go back for the new restaurant and bar addition. It is located in a beautiful valley directly on a beautiful river with great walking near and an adorable down town. Walking to shopping (Carolina flowers!) nice coffee shop and other restaurants. Planning our next stay with anticipation!

The suite was so well done. The attention to detail and the historical elements Josh left are first rate! The tour Josh provided was great - lots of fun facts about the old jail and it's inmates. Would highly recommend. The lobby bar is a huge plus, along with the upper deck and the patio area, which are right on the river. Will be back!!

I can't rave enough about this very impressive hotel, not to mention the small town of Marshall - a very beautiful place full of very nice people. Just getting there, gazing out the window at the gorgeous scenery on the twisty mountain roads was fun. When my husband and I arrived, it was even better than it looked on their website. The restaurant and bar downstairs was the icing on the cake, everything was just fabulous. Can't believe what we received for such an affordable price. We will definitely be coming back to this interesting, one-of-a-kind hotel and telling all of our friends about it!

It started several years ago when I started following the renovation of the old Marshall jailhouse on Instagram - my fandom, that is. Once it opened, I would make periodic trips from Asheville to dine and relax Riverside while enjoying the food and friendly ambiance. Last night was my first time staying. What a delight! The king bed was so comfortable. The room is well-cleaned. The check-in process (self-check-in) was super easy. I love this place - the staff and proprietor are helpful, welcoming, friendly, and I have to say, they handled the crowds in town for the local parade with grace and efficiency without compromising the quality and timing of serving up their delectable food! Great job, y’all - and thank you for doing what you do!!

A boutique hotel in Marshall, North Carolina? Yes, indeed. And not just any boutique hotel - but one created from a restored, century-old county prison with many of the historical elements left intact - and at a bargain price. Do yourself a favor: Visit this authentic, small town in the Mountain South on the banks of the French Broad River. It doesn't matter what time of year you visit - winter, spring, summer or fall. This small town has genuine charm, and the Old Marshall Jail Hotel is the perfect place begin your experience. The design and artistic features are wonderful. We just spent one night there (on a rainy January night), and we are already planning our next stay.
