The renovations to the Tar Heel Motel are absolutely fabulous and terrific.
We enjoyed our stay there. Since there was a one-time pet fee, we stayed there for three nights and made it our base location instead of moving down the outer banks to other motels. They gave us good advi

We stayed here for one night before beginning a week-long vacation at an oceanfront home nearby. So we were excited after a two-day drive to finally be in OBX and our stay and this review can be assumed to be slightly biased due to the fact that we were only there for one night a

Thank you for the detailed review, it helps us see where we need to work on our services. With new owners, a new vision and totally renovated motel we had some kinks to work out this season. It is laid back and set up to be more of a self serve atmosphere with self check-in and check-out. We do have communications set up by email, texts and by phone and I am terribly sorry it failed in your case. Staff is there to help guests with information and assist in any issues that may arise. I am glad that we could accommodate you for the one night before your beach house rental and gather that the room itself was to your liking since no complaint was stated.

My husband, 11 year old daughter, and 1 year old Basset Hound stayed at the Tar Heel for 2 nights. Super easy check in and check out. We received a text message when our room was ready and getting in and out of the room was simple with a push button code. The room was decorate

Thank you for choosing to stay at the Tar Heel Motel! We do service rooms if we know the room is empty and pets are out with their owners. Beds now have nice pillow toppers for those that like a softer sleep and can be easily removed if a firmer bed is requested. We loved your Basset Hound, he was darling!

This place is clean. End of good review. It smells strongly of bleach. The bathroom is so tiny you are claustrophobic. It is way overpriced. The desk clerk disappeared for two hours with no replacement. We booked here because we were under the impression it was owned by Villa

Sorry you did not have the experience you had hoped for and not one that is typical of a stay with us. The king rooms do have small bathrooms with showers only, our double queens have larger baths with tub/shower combo. We do close the front for a lunch break and staff are asked to walk and check the property and help attend to guests that may need help. A two hour break is not standard at all and will be looked into.

We usually rent a house in the OBX, but after an email announcement of the newly renovated property and summer specials, we decided to give it a try for a few days.
Firstly, the rooms are very nice. King beds (a little too firm for me), very beachy decor, kitchen area with fri

Is there a way you can correct the pet friendly option on your trip advisor amenities filter? I check mark "pet friendly" and unfortunately your hotel keeps popping up which seems to have perhaps one of the most unwelcoming blurbs on your site that I've seen about pets. I understand this is a trip advisor filter issue, but perhaps you are able to reach out to them and get that corrected. It just muddies the search for us who like pets. Thanks!!
Hi Mistymoon, All of us here love pets and we all have pets, we can't bring them to work with us since we are a pet free motel. We have expressed this issue and I'm sure TripAdvisor is doing its best.

pet friendly? ocean side hotel…fridge?
The Tar Heel Motel is not pet friendly. It is across the street from the ocean which is why it's so much cheaper. Less then a five minute walk and the motel has a beach access on the corner of its property. All rooms have mini fridges and some rooms even have full size fridges.
