This new management company has no idea how to maintain an historic building. Dirty, sticky stairs, railings and outdoor mats are just a few examples of neglect. Inadequate attention to this beautiful structure is saddening. My husband and I have stayed at the Inn for 17+ years (excluding last year due to Covid). From initial entrance to our final departure, the persons on duty at the front desk seemed too busy to look up and ask us how we were enjoying ourselves. Wow! How things have changed for the worse! The breakfast was an embarrassing affair with no tongs for bagels/English muffins, no decaf coffee, no tea, only whole milk, two kinds of cereal, sticky syrup pitchers (due to sloppy cleaning) and mini warm plates. The social hour offered no nonalcoholic drinks, no napkins and no forks! Ice, bottled water and soft drinks are available ONLY during office hours. We hope the new management company will take matters in hand and restore this classic Inn to its former glory. We suggest those "in charge" should take cues from whoever tends to the outdoor spaces which are filled with whimsical art pieces , beautiful flowers and an unrelenting attention to upkeep The grounds are still breathtaking!

I stayed here on my first and last nights in the Outer Banks. The building and grounds are fabulous. The beach is a short private walkway away. The pool area is well designed and removed away from the lovely outside seating area. The place is on the historic registry. So, I am glad I stayed here. The downside? The comforts of people are neglected. I think that the real estate company is putting profit over people! As if we wouldn’t notice? The mattresses are way past prime… sagging and lumpy. We were in the same room both nights and I simply couldn’t sleep in it the second night. Luckily, I had told the office manager that the day bed’s blankets and sheets and comforter were torn an dirty, first time through. That was changed and the bed was fresh this time. Clocks and chargers weren’t plugged in behind tables, coffee maker struggled to work. The breakfast room is delightful, lots of variety fresh food, muffins and coffee. The hot portion is very small not even two inches square of a egg bake. Not equaling a one egg portion. Inadequate protein for busy active people out at the beach, riding bikes or even facing a long road ahead. I challenge all the owners to spend one night in these beds and wake up to the skimpy breakfast and be active all morning. That’s the traveler’s side…

I chose a Queen room on the 3rd floor because I wanted to hear the ocean as well as view it. I learned that you can see a bit from the 2nd floor (rocking and adirondack chairs provided on the balconies) but I was glad to be up high as it was very private and got plenty of exercise as there was no elevator. The beach is a very short stroll from the back of the Inn and within minutes I was sitting by the water. There are bicycles and chairs to borrow if you did not bring your own as well. The entire staff was extraordinarily friendly and helpful. whether is was needing ice or extra towels or suggestions for dinner, I was always met with kindness. The singing birds were delightful. And the grounds are lovely and so inviting for an afternoon nap or a quiet visit with coffee in the morning. I was very impressed with breakfast. A freshly prepared hot breakfast was offered every day with additional muffins, biscuits, croissants, bagels and my favorite, a blueberry turnover was also available. My room had a large TV, good size refrigerator, writing desk, wing chairs and a bathroom with a stall shower. I am more than average size person and the shower was a tight fit which not easily allowed for thorough cleaning. But I managed. Next time I would get a room with a bathtub instead. Every afternoon there is a happy hour with a good selection of wine and hors d'oeuvres . After a long and draining experience with the pandemic and working with my face in a computer all day every day for 15 months, this stay was a welcomed and soothing relief. The First Colony Inn was exactly what I needed and I look forward to retuning again.

We stayed four nights at First Colony Inn, and enjoyed great hospitality and ambience of the inn. Breakfasts and happy hour daily were lovely. Rooms were comfortable and well-appointed. We'd go back again.
