Hotel des Commandants and/or Hotel Baker in Gaspé, it’s the same hotel. Hotel Baker has existed since 1881 in Gaspé and has many stories to tell, an icon in the city's landscape and recognized for its hospitality. Located on Rue de Reine overlooking the city, this hotel is privileged by its site and its panoramic view of Gaspé Bay. Parking is on site and free. Since that time, the hotel has undergone significant transformations. On the other hand, the elevator was probably forgotten. Only two floors to climb, but sometimes difficult to carry luggage.
The hotel is modern, elegant, luxurious and remarkably clean. The rooms are spacious and bright. Comfortable bed, quality bedding, work desk, television, refrigerator, coffee maker, armchair, etc. A well-equipped room with a breathtaking view of Gaspé Bay and the Promenade Jacques Cartier.
The bathroom is of good size, shower, toilet and quality towels, clean and in good quantity.
The hotel restaurant, TÉTÛ Taverne Gaspésienne, welcomes you for meals, discover the unique flavors of Gaspésie in a friendly and relaxed atmosphere. Local products are in the spotlight.
An unforgettable two-day stay, unparalleled comfort in a unique setting.
Congratulations to the entire Hotel Baker team
Have a good stay!

I stayed at the hotel with my mom and my beagle. The room is large, the bathroom a little small but they are very closed with animals. $35 a night for the dog who must sleep in a crate. If they find hair on the furniture they charge $100. I have made several hotels with my dog and I have never been forced to sign a release with so much restriction, they accept but it is reluctantly. I spoke with the director by e-mail who is very incisive about animals, he doesn't want to know anything. Anyway, I'm still doubtful.

Pros:
Location
The only hotel in the area where you can have lunch directly on site in addition to dinner
Clean
Comfortable mattress
Many towels and washcloths

Areas for improvement:
Darkness of the room. The curtains are not wide enough to be joined together without creating a skylight at both ends. I had to sleep with a wolf for my eyes.
I find that the portions for breakfast are smaller than elsewhere: 1 sausage rather than 2, very few roast potatoes, the equivalent of a toast rather than 2. Feel free to take the brunch plate which is not that big.

I would return to this hotel which is very convenient.

We spent two nights at Hotel Baker and thoroughly enjoyed our stay. The room was bright and spotless. Housekeeping services were available to replace items only but that was not a problem. There was ample parking. The room was functional and the walk in shower was great. My only criticism was that the dark painted doors and door frames were chipped. A quick touch up of paint is all that is needed. The gym was in the basement and certainly adequate for a hotel of this size. Be mindful that the restaurant is not open daily for breakfast and dinner although other restaurants are nearby.

BE AWARE! They clearly LIE when they advertise themself as a 4 star property.

Few examples of what we had to face:

When called front desk to ask for water in our room, we were told that there is a vending machine on the first floor (and make sure you have coins on you, since the scanner for bills is broken and the machine comes from an era, when credit cards did not exist).

Do you want food in your room? We were told to go to the restaurant (entrance to which is right NEXT to the front desk) and ask them directly. If they are NOT busy (!), they will prepare food for you, but, when the food is ready, you have to come (!) and pick it up yourself. Unbelievable!

Shampoo, conditioner, soap in the room are in big plastic containers attached to the walls (identical containers/presentation can be found in 1 star motels across North America). Quality of all these liquids resembles their presentation. After washing my hair once, the following day, my scull was itchy most of the day.

Meanwhile, it is with enviable confidence the front desk personnel kept reassuring me that the property is a 4 star property and things described above are completely normal. I guess my wife and I come from a different planet…

Friendly and helpful staff on reception.
Clean and spacious room.
Good value for money.
The restaurant attached to the hotel has a great view of the river below and the food is pub quality. Only downside is it closes at 9pm and no facility to get an alcoholic drink after 9pm.

After a long ride we arrived to a clean, comfortable room with adequate amenities to serve our purpose.

Boy! We were happy to be able to stay in a 4 star & pet friendly hotel; being that in Quebec it is not very common to have pet friendly hotels & hope that the major chains improve at this level.
Having a small dog & well behaved it is disappointing one has to pay for the visitors that do not take of their pets when staying in hotels! A surcharge was requested of 35$ per night for our pet which was @ least 20$ over charged compared to other 4 to5 star hotels ! I know every chain have their policies & this was best we could find in the area & no regrets…

We are experiencing exceptional times with the pandemic COVID 19 & being able to travel within our province of Quebec this helps us feel a sort of normality with our vaccine passport that has give us a sense of normality.

I recommend this place & hope you enjoy it during a warmer season much more fun to enjoy area.

Reception was rather cold - two ladies to greet me but neither of them could find a smile.

The room itself was adequate (I went for the cheaper, parking-side room), but being located right next to the door/staircase, I could hear people opening and closing the door constantly and walking up and down the stairs. You cannot expect guests to be civil and quiet on their own. Install a door that doesn't slam and put some carpet on the stairs.

The towels and the bed sheets are very rough. Bathroom is extremely small.

I saw the reviews people left with lower ratings but our experience was positive all around. Our room was clean, spacious. We had a dog with us and it was convenient that we stayed in the room 218, which was close to the side door to take the dog out. We used their laundry service and we ordered food and alcoholic drinks to our room (no room service, so it was like a take out). Food was good and drinks were delicious. Front staff (Viola) was very patient (I asked a lot of questions) and professional. We would stay again.

I had to think about writing this review because I’ve never rated a placed I’ve stayed so low, but maybe the rating and comment will get management’s attention to correct a very dangerous condition.

Pros: Centrally located in Gaspé, adequate room with a mini-fridge and coin laundry which we needed for a long road trip. Friendly front desk staff during the day.

Cons: After checking in, we proceeded to walk up the flight of stairs in the central stairway and down the corridor. I commented to my wife that every stairwell fire door was wedged open. (I know what I’m talking about, 40 plus years in the A/E/C business and the last four as a Building Official for a major U.S. city.). I then make it a practice to locate the other emergency exits and stairways, more wedged open doors in the fire-resistant rated stairways. The first night, at 12:35 am the building’s fire alarms go off. Everyone evacuates the building to the parking lot. We never learned the reason for the alarm (suddenly, French was the ONLY language on the planet) and apparently it was a false alarm and no fire. However, if there had been a fire, smoke and fire would have quickly spread through both wings, all floors, and lobby of the three story non-fire sprinkled building. Not a pretty picture.
