When gold was king around the turn of the 20th century, there were hundreds of pubs in the Eastern Goldfields. The Denver City Hotel in Coolgardie is a survivor. Coolgardie was once the third largest town in Western Australia. It's smaller today, but it's undergoing a modest revival. This outback hotel provides the main features -- cold beer and hot food. The Denver City also provides accommodation. The rooms have air conditioning, an asset in this torrid climate. Coolgardie is in an arid outback area, it's an interesting but unpretentious town, 345 miles (555 km) by car from Perth, the WA state capital.

The Denver City Hotel is the only remaining hotel of the dozens that once lined the street of Coolgardie. This gold town is now undergoing a revival, and tourists now are joining die-hard prospectors who search for the precious metal. Today, the Denver City Hotel is serving hot meals and icy cold beer, as it always has done.

Stopped for lunch and to watch a game of Australian Rule Football. The tavern was well frequented with travellers and locals. We had a few beers, lunch and watched a game of Australian Rules Football. We initially arrived for the live game, but without pay TV we had to leave and return later to watch the game on Free to Air. The lunch was served at the bar, the back lounge area was not open, it was a mid week visit. Good selection of food on the menu and reasonable quality for a country tavern.

My husband and I were staying at the local caravan park so went there for our evening meal. Over 4 weeks of travel across three states this was by far our worst experience. When we walked in to the dining area we were greeted with loud heavy metal music which continued to play. A strong smell of urine was evident every time the door to the mens toilet was opened. We each ordered chicken parmigiana. Both were dry, overcooked and mine was accompanied by cold vegetables. My husband ordered salad but got only chips. We noticed another guest sent their steak back to be further cooked. Our experience was so bad we decided to leave without my husband finishing his beer which is a first for him! Under no circumstances should you consider dining at this hotel.

We came for a meal and I was told the Garlic Steakburger with chips was a very large meal and thoroughly recommended. Was told the steak was very big so my wife and I decided to go halves. The burger came with a garlic bun top and bottom (good). The steak only fitted half the bread roll and was only about 3mm thick - so much for a big steak - very disappointing!!!

KEEP DRIVING. The staff at this dilapidated and shabby ruin were nice enough and politely took our money for a room but didn't warn us of the all-night, grog-fueled party that took place right outside our window. Somehow we got about 2 hours sleep but by 1 a.m. gave up and fled to join the trucks on the road back to Perth. The Denver, like the rest of Coolgardie, would benefit greatly from the attentions of a few D9 bulldozers.

We just stopped for a quick drink but met some great characters, and wonderful locals if you have time to stop and talk to them.Alan was great and told us a great deal about the town and museum which was incredible and better than most, even the building itself was amazing! What a great stop off. Expect us back for a night on our return. Hope to see our newly made friends again.

The staff were very friendly and did their best to make some food for us. However, it is sadly very dirty, run down and needs a good clean . It’s a shame as it’s an important part of history. It’s a beautiful building that needs help.

The lady behind the bar was amazing. Could not fault the service as it went well beyond expectation.q Really nice cold (and I mean cold) beer and wine. Really enjoyed the lunch. We had the spare ribs and fish.
