'Maropeng', is a Setswana word meaning 'returning to the place of origin' and this was kept in mind when the interiors of the hotel were designed. The four elemental forces of nature, earth, fire, water and ice that kick-started our planet some 3-billion years ago feature prominently in the overall look. The 24-bed boutique hotel is a five minute walk from South Africa's premier tourist attraction and 10 km (6 mi) from the Sterkfontein Caves.

I can not back date this further but I went back in 2015 and this place was amazing! we did not see the stars but the experience was divine. The hotel rooms were HUGE offering luxury, so much of comfort and amenities. I have stayed in many hotels and this was one worthy of a good review. The view from our room was gorgeous, it overlooked the view of unspoiled nature, there were no obstructions of buildings to spoil this view. They had a different selection of tea and coffee's in the room which made this an more pleasant experience from the "usual" options at hotels. The dinner was a buffet dinner which was very good selection of food, very pleasant. We also had a good time at museum itself. While we could hear what was happening in a noisy room, this did not take away from the experience.

What a stunning setting and a very comfortable hotel. We stayed three nights. On the second night there was a corporate event and the staff were concerned we would be disturbed, but we weren't. We had been given the room furthest from the communal areas and hardly heard a thing. We opted for room service on that evening and our food was superb. Our comfort and service were obviously just as important to the staff as the event. The manager even came to chcek with us at breakfast the next morning because she was concerned in case we had been disturbed. In the hospitality industry, it's the people who make a place. This hotel has it right. We loved it. Thank you to all the staff who looked after us so well. Our stay was so restful and the patio was a perfect place to sit with a glass of wine, taking in the spectacular scenery.

We selected this hotel given its proximity to the Cradle of Humankind - we just didn’t realize exactly how close it was (it was seriously just about 1/4 mile)! The staff is very friendly and welcoming; the rooms are spacious, clean, and every single one appears to provide spectacular view of a luminescent South African sunset. There is a restaurant on-site. The food is average but the friendly staff and convenience make up for it.

Place didn’t meet my expectations. On our 1st night, during dinner, power went out just when our meal was presented to our table. The hotel’s generator apparently ran out of diesel. We had our meal in the dark. Our waiter could only manage to provide our table of 7 with a tiny candle. He informed us that the manager would talk with us the next day. After dinner,we had to walk back to our rooms using the tiny candle that was provided at dinner (no torches/flashlights provided). We were forced to hunker down in my sister’s hotel room until power was restored. One light in my bathroom was flickering while the light above the sink was completely out. The air conditioner made a loud sound as if a helicopter was about to take off. I didn’t get a restful night. The next day, during breakfast, the manager didn’t come and have a conversation with us as promised the previous night.
During checkout the front desk stuff was only concerned about me settling my bill from dinner than the bad service. I asked to speak with the manager & was told they were not available and they will contact me via phone or email, I never heard from them.

I cannot speak highly enough about our stay. Our room was beautiful, clean and spacious and the bed was very comfortable. The view from our patio was spectacular and the tree filled with weaver birds was a pleasure to watch. For dinner we had room service - delicious peri peri chicken and braised oxtail. Both were delicious! The breakfast buffet was varied with excellent quality foods and you could special order eggs as you liked. All staff were friendly, helpful and professional. Recommend highly.

Lovely boutique hotel and I would definitely recommend for great price and is very well situated to explore both the cradle of humankind and magaliesburg. The staff are very friendly and helpful.

There are one or two things that need to be reviewed though, the wifi is non-existent in the hotel rooms which would be fine if there was decent mobile coverage but there is not, so it makes it impossible to work in privacy, you have to go reception to get decent wifi. Pre booking meals is not worth it as the charge does equate to how much you eat. There is no cash policy that should be highlighted more when booking.

Everything was nice, staff was friendly. Disappointed though that the food from the a la carte menu, ingredients and portions were not the same. I had the chicken/prawn curry the first night it was stunning, the portion was perfect. I decided to have it again the next night, it looked like a kiddies portion and lacked flavour.

Generally, the front desk staff were courteous and helpful. My main gripe was with the chef. One evening I ordered a shoulder lamb which was on the menu. When my meal came, it was fatty lamb chops I was given. When I asked the waiter why this was so, he said he didn't know the difference between shoulder lamb and lamb chops. I then asked to see the chef who came out to my table. In our conversation the chef said because there wasn't any shoulder lamb, he had given me lamb chops. When I protested and said that I should have at least been consulted, and given the opportunity to order something else, he stormed off. The hotel needs to fix this. The chef, whose name is Tebogo, is insolent. The hotel also needs to match its menu to what is available in the kitchen. This incident turned what would have been a pleasant weekend into an unpleasant stay.

Although I am simply a guest at this hotel, I feel certain that if you asked them direct they would be only too happy to help.
