Charming family-run inn located in the small fishing village of Alma. Located directly across the street from the active Alma fishing harbour, rooms with Bay views overlooking the harbour are available. We offer free wifi throughout the property and free guest parking is available at the back of our building. This property previously run as a B&B, has recently been updated with newly renovated ensuite bathrooms, furnishings, and much more to make your stay with us that much more comfortable. Being such a small accommodations (with only 8 rooms) we strive to bring our guests that "home away from home" feeling while they're staying with us. Our inn also offers a guest television room, great for guests traveling that are more social or are traveling with family members staying in other rooms. While we do not have 24-hour front desk service, there is always someone on our property looking forward to answering any questions our guests may have, as well as give great travelling tips and suggestions. A contact phone number is given to all guests to reach a staff member when no one is at the front desk. All restaurants and shops located in Alma are within a short walking distance of the Captain's inn, along with the Alma beach and Fundy National Park. We have many great restaurants in our small area that will be eager to serve you breakfast, lunch, and dinner. We also have a bakeshop, 2 seafood markets, a micro-brewery, a café, and a general store located in the village. The staff at Captain's Inn looks forward to greeting you during your upcoming visit.

First off the owner Madison is just the sweetest. Location is great, rooms are clean, bed was a little harder then what I’m use too but it worked. No A/C but we opened all 3 windows & turned on 2 of the ceiling fans & the room was nice & cool from the breeze off the ocean

This place was amazing, the family that owns this amazing house is very welcoming. We couldn't have asked for a better stay. We will definitely be back, looking forward to more stories and the best sticky buns ever.

I stayed here for 4 days and would go back in a minute. The service was great and very pleasant. The young lady at the front desk always asked me how my trip was going and what great attractions to see.

My wife & I wanted to do some hiking in Fundy National Park but we aren't campers so just looking for a bed, clean room, with a bathroom in the room. The young lady at the front desk was extremely courteous & helpful. At least 7 great places to eat/drink within a 5-10 minute walk, gas/grocery next door, fridge in the room. TV connected to Bell satellite but limited options (basic channels). No A/C but there is a nice breeze off the water in the evening and we were fine (end of July, high 20's low 30C through the day). As mentioned elsewhere, no longer a B&B so no food service but again, lots of places to eat. All in all, nothing fancy but not expensive, just what we needed for what we were there to do (hike the trails in Fundy). we would stay again.

Before going to Alma, I read a number of the reviews set out below. They sounded good and so I booked at the Captain's Inn. Sadly, the Inn bore little resemblance to the favourable reviews. Whilst I would not use quite the same language as Frederic T (see below) I share his sentiments. The service was dreadful. Like Frederik's room, our rooms were not touched during our stay and so we had to make our own bed. That was not a great hardship but other things were more irritating. For example, we wanted to play cards one evening but the light in the public area with tables was poor owing to a bulb having blown. We mentioned this the following morning and we were astonished when the response was a shrug and a comment to the effect that the area with the tables is not often used. There was no apology or any suggestion that the bulb would be replaced (and it wasn't!). Frederic is also right about the breakfasts. I really don't understand the owner's comment below regarding the property being an inn not a B&B. We stayed in several Maritime Province inn's and they all provided breakfasts that were superior to that provided by the Captain's Inn (which is simply a matter of "go to the kitchen and get it - indeed, find it - yourself"). Put simply, don't assume that this property is up to the standard of many other inns in the Maritimes: it isn't.

Response from Madison C, Manager at Captains Inn
Responded Sep 15, 2019
Hello, My apologies that your stay with us was not as you expected. I would like to however point out that the breakfast that we offer is in fact a free continental breakfast - which is a "help yourself" breakfast. All available breakfast items as well as dishes and utensils are laid out in a designated area for guests each morning. Our breakfast is meant to give guests an additional choice in the morning, rather than having to go to the only restaurant offering breakfast in our village, which can get very over crowed. I can not speak for other "inns" located in The Martimes overall, but in our village other inns actually charge extra fees for their continental breakfast - or choose not to offer a breakfast at all. We choose to not even advertise that we offer a free breakfast, other than on Booking.com which shows we offer only cereal, coffee, tea, and juice. (Even though I do offer guests other items such as fruit, toast, bagels, yogurt, etc. during busier months). I would also like to point out that the room you are describing above is a room we let guests use for breakfast only, and is not what I would consider a "public area". This room is very bright during the mornings from natural sunlight. Therefore, the lights are rarely used or even needed. I can assure you that they do work, however. With plans to remove this room completely in the near future, we are not planning to purchase and replace the couple burnt out bulbs as it would be an unnecessary extra expense as well as an overall waste as the specific bulbs in this area could not be used elsewhere ... I would also like to apologize that your beds were not made. Unfortunately with only myself working here, and having such a shortage of staff in our area, beds made/room cleanings are usually only done after all of the other rooms have been finished for guests arriving that day. By this time, if guests have already made their own bed then it's not available for us to do it for you.

Service close to zero. Nobody at reception when you leave. If you stay for 2 night, the room will not be cleaned. For breakfast - and it's noy a joke - you have to do it yourself. The only thing you have is a free access to the common kitchen. To summerize: hotel price but YMCA standart.

Response from Graham C, Owner at Captains Inn
Responded Aug 20, 2019
Hello, My apologies for the clear confusion as we are not at all a B&B, and do not advertise as one... The Captain's Inn is simply just an inn. We offer our guests a free continental breakfast as a convenience due to lack of restaurants serving breakfast in the area. A continental breakfast is typically a lighter style breakfast where guests can choose from a variety of foods such as breads, fruits, cereals, coffee, juice, etc. Guests usually then toast their own bread, pour their own cereal, etc.

This is quite a cheap option and therefore doesn't offer any luxuries. Our room was a decent size but the bed was rather squashy. It looked out over the car park. The shower and toilet were in an en suite but the sink was in the room which was annoying and there wasn't enough space to put stuff. No cleaning or bed-making was done. The DIY breakfast was quite basic and a bit tricky if there was more than one couple in the kitchen at the same time. A limited selection of cereals, toast and fruit. Overall, reasonable value.

Staying at The Captain’s Inn in Alma, New Brunswick was a perfect place for my solo trip and first visit to Alma. For anyone looking for a family run business to support I’d like to highlight a few specific points about this Inn: 1. The owners and proprietors, Madison and her father Graham, are very friendly and helpful. They run the inn as well as the gas station next-door and Madison goes back-and-forth between the two places. You may not find someone always at the front desk of the inn and if Madison is not there she is just next door. She was always accessible and helpful. 2. The rooms and beds are very comfortable with fluffy pillows. That’s always a highlight for me. I posted a photograph here. I stayed on the second floor and chose to have a room at the back which overlooks the parking lot. 3. A continental breakfast is offered between 7:30 and 9:30 AM. Cereal, muffins, toast, fruit and juice as well as coffee is available. One of the things that really helped me out as a solo traveler is that I was able to go and get chili and chicken noodle soup to go from Kelly’s Bake Shop down the road and bring it back to the inn and put it in the fridge to heat up for dinner in the microwave. That was a real plus! 4. I was rarely at the inn because I was out hiking but it was nice to know that there was such a comfortable sitting area as well as a TV room with lots of old favorite DVDs. This is a family run business and like all of the small businesses in Alma, hats off to everybody for being so warm and welcoming and friendly. It’s a great community!!

We booked a queen which upon arriving we realized was pretty small. For a few dollars more we got a double queen which had lots more room. The room had 3 windows, 3 chairs, 2 bedside tables, a vanity and another little table. The beds are firm, the room clean and simple. Breakfast is a very basic continental. This is no frills but comfortable and pleasant. It’s also reasonably priced.
