This motel is probably the cheapest in St. Stephen (not that there are many to choose from in the first place!), but as they say, you get what you pay for. The rooms are like a throwback to the 50s, with lurid green bathtub and toilet! There is no breakfast, no coffee maker, no microwave, just a fridge. The place is badly in need of renovation, smells old and musty, and more urgently, needs a good vacuuming of the corridor.

On the positive side, the owner is very friendly (I think she's Chinese), the wi-fi works, the rooms are warm, spacious and comfortable and the bed sheets and towels are spotlessly clean.

Stay here only as a last resort, for one night only.

This is not the sort of place I would normally seek out (I usually research things to death beforehand), but we just needed a place to crash for a few hours after crossing the border in the middle of the night, and this was the first we saw. It worked for what we needed it to be, which was a clean, comfortable bed at a resonable price available at 4am.

It's very dated and utilitarian and cheap looking. It won't be winning any beauty contests. I was pleasantly surprised to find it genuinely very clean, though. Even the heavily-textured wallpaper was free from any visible dirt. The bed was more comfortable than my own at home and the sheets were soft cotton, although the bedspread was that thin shiny polyester kind. There weren't any extra pillows (2 on a double bed) or blankets in the room. The room was air conditioned. The windows had been left open and it was chilly when we walked in, and the heat didn't seem to come on when adjusted. Maybe turned off for the summer? I appreciated that it was well-lit with a hanging light (oddly placed over the dresser) and an adjustable lamp on each side of the bed, all of which could be switched off from in bed. There was a tv, but no alarm clock (!), which was my biggest gripe by far. Other furniture included three padded chairs, a desk, and two built-in bedside tables. The woman at the desk was very friendly despite being woken up by our arrival, and offered us a late checkout without being asked due to the lateness of our arrival. We still overslept (see comment about alarm clock), but were told it was fine. The walls were thin enough that we heard another couple getting ready to leave at 5am, but no other noise despite being on a major road.

If I knew I'd be stopping again in this area, I would deinitely be researching ahead for something nicer, but if circumstances had us once again looking for a last-minute place to crash, I'd have no qualms about revisiting.

The staff were quiet, yet generally friendly. The decor of this motel ressembles the late 70's, early 80's period. The bed was generally ok for sleeping, except that it was too short for me (I'm 6'0) , so I slept with my feet hanging over the edge. No extras with this place. The smoke alarm had been broken and was hanging from the ceiling. This place is in much need of renovations. You can find much better budget motels across the border in Maine.

I am not the typical complainer. After a long and tireing trip returning from the US, we decided to stay at the St Stephen Inn, St Stephen, New Brunswick...big mistake! There was no hot running water for baths, showers etc, would have had to share a rubber plug between the tub and sink (didn't matter anyway as the sink wouldn't drain) The room was not clean and smelled of mould. I would not recommend staying here even as a last option..overnight in your car would be much better. This place should be shut down.

The worse ever experience. The illiterate and ignorant old Chinese lady showed her angry face three times to my seven years old child on a very silly issue- twice in front of all of us. Temperature was -3 but no heating in the bath room. While I informed her this, she replied that no other guests have any problem, why should I have? And she is not supposed to provide personal service. What a surprise!! Than why does one pay to hotel? Her conversations seemed like that we should be overwhelmed as we got a room to sleep in no matter even if I paid for that. I really was surprised, how come some one working in a hotel in Canada behaves like that way. If any one plans to stay there, please do not bring children. They are very hostile to children!!

Room was clean and not smelly.. Service was excellent and the gal at the front desk is a delight. We also stayed there last May 2010 and looked forward to staying there this year
We drive there from New Bruinswick when we get of the boat from DIgby and arrive there around 9 p.m. and will continue to do the same..

Boy oh boy, don't stay here. Website is very misleading. This motel has definitely seen better days, about 30 years ago I bet. Pretty filthy rooms. Definitely a "socks on" motel. Only good thing is the price!

We emailed prior to our booking and were promised a clean and comfortable room. When we got in at midnight we were put at the lower part of the motel and walked into a room where the moths literally flew from the curtains, sheets were dirty and it stunk of mold. I had a 5 yr old and 8 week old with me. We were given a rate of $74.99. I walked into the bathroom and it was full of mold and there was a spout but no shower head.
I went and complained and the lady told us her husband gave us the wrong room. We were then put in 104. It still stunk and the fridge wasnt plugged in (which we needed for baby bottles!) The hot water took a very long time to come in when wanting hot water for the tub or sink, there were dead moths in the drawers and the carpet, if you knelt on it felt damp. The lady changed our rate to $60/day. My husband had to complain about something and she made a deal with him that if we stayed for the 5 nites we booked, we would pay $50 a nite. (The only other hotel wanted $114+tax per nite - but has a pool, continental breakfast and park for kids to play and is right beside the grocery store). We stayed but when we checked out she backtracked and went back to $60 a nite, after bickering with her I gave up because I just wanted to get outta there.
Its VERY limited in that town and we were told stories of needles being found in the beds and that its so bad some truckers wont even stay there.
I would suggest to stay in St Andrews, although I talked to the keeper at the Blair House B&B and he was extremely helpful and extremely friendly..but I didint stay there so I dont know what its like. We also did a drive out to St Johns and there are many motels along the route right on the water.
St Stephens Inn has to be the dirtiest motel I have ever stayed in and they really dont seem to have any set rates as the front desk has a posting that says something to the effect of "what rate you accept at check in is final".
I did notice that the mattresses looked new, but the sheets, carpet, bedding etc. leaves something to be desired.
The front desk smells as do the two rooms that I experienced.
I think that the lady I dealt with sincerely tried her best, but I also think they know that this motel is not up to par. I am surprised that health and safety have not come in there to inspect.
The TVs don't really work properly either.
We spent as much time as we could outside of the rooms and kept busy but once home, made a point of dissinfecting everything. The smells are horrible.
The location is good as you can literally walk across the bridge to Maine. Make sure to make a stop into the New Brunswick Tourism and Information Centre, they are incredibly helpful.

We have just returned from staying one night at the St. Stephen Inn.It will be the last one for us. The room was small and dingy. The bathroom door did not close properly, the wood had swollen on the door, from dampness I think!!!The steel legs of the bathroom sink were rusty. The towel bar fell apart when putting the towel on it. The towels were more like cotton rags, they couldn't get any thinner! The shower did not work properly, I had to stand right underneath the head to get any water from it. The entrance door to the room had weather stripping hanging off , which made the door hard to close. In all, the place was very "broken down" looking and we would definitely never go there again!!!
