My wife and I were able to spend only one night at Tuckamore Lodge, but we thoroughly enjoyed our brief time in this country retreat. We wished that we could have stayed longer. The setting is ideal, overlooking a lake and close to St. Anthony, Viking sights, ice berg tours, etc. There is a large and comfortable common room available to all guests . Very good meals are served in a common dining room, where we enjoyed visiting with other travelers. The staff are quite friendly and helpful; they provide a good dose of the local color of the area and we enjoyed visiting with them greatly. We arrived a day late due to a flat tire on our rental car (which did not have a spare tire!) caused by the huge potholes on 432 to the east of Plum Point. (We found that the road is much better if you take the longer route on 430 toward St. Anthony and then head south on 432 to the lodge.) Our travel agent requested a refund from the lodge for the night that we missed and the manager was so kind as to grant that request. The hospitality and tranquility of Tuckamore Lodge are not to be missed. We recommend staying there are as long as you can!

The lady who checked us in was wonderful, she showed us to our rooms and then gave us a quick tour around the facilities. We then spent the remainder of the afternoon in the lodge’s main sitting area relaxing with a drink.

We’d opted to dine there that evening and it was honestly one of my favourite meals from our entire 10 day Newfoundland tour. A fresh berry salad to start, salmon with a whisky and honey sauce and fresh vegetables for main followed by lemon meringue pie for dessert - compliments to the chef!

After dinner we had our guided moose tour where we spent just under 2 hours with our guide and saw 4 moose total.

We slept well that evening (the bedrooms are very comfortable) and breakfast the next day was almost as good as the dinner the night before. The only reason I’ve rated our stay 4 instead of 5 is because of the size of the bathroom in our room… it was tiny! Nowhere to hang towels or to put your toiletries… other than that we loved our time here.

This has long been a favourite place and it did not disappoint. Just minutes off the main road and you feel at one with nature. The staff are friendly and efficient. The accommodations were clean and comfortable. We sat by the pond and listened to the loons as the sun set, then a caribou swam across in front of us. We crawled into bed and felt like we were sleeping on a cloud. We woke to the smell of bacon. Thank you to Barb Genge and staff for keeping up your standards during this difficult time.

We had room #9, which was upstairs. It was a very small room with furniture that was too big for the room. We had to move a chair into the bathroom, thereby blocking the shower, just to have room for the two of us to move around. There was nowhere in the bathroom area to lay out toothbrushes and other items. The bed had a frame with a piece of wood that stuck out about six inches beyond the foot of the bed for the width of the bed, with right angled corners, which we kept running into at night - because who would ever think that a bedframe would have that sticking out? (See the photo.) The windows would not open fully because they were blocked by the roof of the adjoining building. It was very hot in that room, but there was nothing we could do to cool it off. There is no temperature control. The power outlets were extremely awkward to deal with. It's as if someone had designed the room to be as awkward and injury-friendly as possible.
The setting is far from almost anything, but fortunately, the Inn cooks meals for their guests.
We would not stay there again. If you stay at this inn, be sure NOT to get room #9.

We stayed for two nights while touring Newfoundland. This place is an absolute gem. The rooms are comfortable and clean, the food is fantastic, and the view from the lodge is wonderful.

If you have the opportunity to visit the area, Staying at Tuckamore would be an excellent (and relaxing!) choice.

I would not stay at this lodge. The owner, who arranges the trips and activities they offer on their website, does not do so on a first come first serve basis.

We told the owner (Barb Genge) we would like to go on a nature trip they offer at the lodge the next morning and she proceeded to book four other people AFTER I spoke to her . I said "Okay so thats makes six of us" and she said there is only room for four on the boat. She tried to justify it by saying that they are staying with her for five days. I guess she feels more loyalty to people who spend more money at the lodge. (We were staying for two nights....spent 600 dollars) So we got bumped off the boat! The next day a fifth person got added to the trip as well! . Guess what?....it wasn't one of our party (2 people). Justification: "He's a biologist"

I have NEVER in all my years of travel been treated so poorly and been treated essentially like dirt.

As we only had the one full day there, I tried in vain to book another boat tour for ourselves (She said we could call a few places) . When my husband called a couple of numbers she got angry at him and said "Why don't you let me call those numbers...I know those people". We were dumbfounded.

I have stayed at Tuckamore Lodge four times. All stays have been hunting trips. My wife has been there two of the times. Barb Genge and her staff are attentive to every detail of your stay. We will be making our fifth trip to Tuckamore this fall and can't wait to see all of our friends again.

The lodge was quite comfortable with a friendly staff. The rooms with double beds and private baths were very nice. Their 'delectable meals' (their verbiage on their web site) left a lot to be desired. A plate of beans with two balls of mashed potatoes, a heaping pile of elbow macaroni with two ounces of ground meat, or a roast beef sandwich with one slice of meat you could read a paper through does not to me constitute a delectable meal. We were served a salad once during our week stay and never an appetizer although the website depicted mussels, scallops and wine. Drinks consisted of coffee, tea or water, no sodas. Fruit did not exist. The tension in the air whenever the owner was in the presence of her staff was quite noticeable. Everyone was left with a very uneasy feeling when she was present.

Every year my friends and I look forward with great anticipation to going on a hunting or fishing trip to lodges over most of North and South America. In past years, we have visited Argentina (six times), Venezuela, Panama, Guatemala,Costa Rica, Mexico (Atlantic,Pacific and Gulf Coasts) and Alaska. We have also visited many locations in the US and Canada, including hunting moose in Newfoundland on five different occasions. This year was no exception as we booked a week at Tuckamore Lodge in Main Brook, Nfl, Canada. The booking process started two years ago, with my friends and I speaking to the lodge owner to answer questions, specifically concerning the equipment and facilities to accommodate physical disabilities. 'No problem', we were told, lots of equipment for all contingencies. If your idea of lots of equipment consists of one Argo and one quad that no one is allowed to use to access the woods, split amongst 18 hunters, then they have lots of assets. Hunting at Tuckamore for a handicapped hunter, which would be anyone not able to walk 20 miles through the tuckamore, bogs, blow downs, and rocks, consists of shooting from the road. The use of a quad or Argo to traverse the logging roads, snowmobile lanes or power lines to an access point is non existant . Road hunting by the guides and staff is blamed on the physical condition of the guest and not the real problem, lack of equipment.

Of all the camps and lodges we have gone to over the years, this one was by far the most unsatisfactory. What was provided, versus what was implied were quite different.
I traveled with three friends, whose names and e-mails I will provide
on request.

Response from tuckamore499197, Owner at Tuckamore Lodge
Responded Nov 5, 2014
This guest arrived at my Lodge with his own expectation. I had sent contracts to all hunters but none were returned so I had no idea of their medical condition (person writing this report had a sever heart problem (10 Stents) which I was notified by his guide after his first morning of hunting. However to be fair I knew that they were not capable of walking long distances and one was limited to 20 feet or so told by one of the hunting friends in a more recent conversation. Health Condition of those hunters was fair to poor and their personal weights from 240-290. They were issued 2 Either Sex Licenses and 2 Male on/Calf as had been discussed previously with one of the guys. They hunted in 2 different areas both adjacent to my Main Lodge. Hunters were here from all 3 hunting area that we are involved in. All 4 harvested moose and 2 in one area had been taken in by truck/ ATV on a Forestry Access Road. We have our Argo for retrieving moose only as that is the law in our Province. You are not allowed to pursue animals while hunting with an ATV. So our Argo is used for retrieving only. I went to the meat house and was confronted by Milt who attacked me about how I operate my company, how I treat my guides and staff and them as guest. I had no idea what he was talking about. I had never seen or met any of those 4 people until they arrived at my Lodge in my Van on Sunday and this was now Friday. I did speak with my guide and he informed me that his hunter told him that he would write a report and have it put on the internet to destroy me and my Company. I felt that this man arrived with a hate and I became the target of this hate and what he had conjured up in his mind. At no time was their a shortage of food at my Lodge. I have a professional chef and an Asst. with 5 other staff at my Lodge taking care of my guest plus guides for each hunter. It was also brought to my attention during this conversation or shouting match that one of the guys having his travel arranged for Saturday morning while the others didn't leave until the afternoon of Sunday and Mil being one of the 3. My change over day is Sunday, it is posted on my web site, however he decided that he had informed me, if that had been the case he probably would not have come to my lodge and that would have been a blessing for all of us. Due to his irate behaviour and he in position of a rifle with ammunition, I called 2 taxis (as 1 would not have been large enough to handle the guest and gear) to come and take this man with his friends out of my Lodge to Deer Lake. I paid the transportation. 3 were seen on Sunday by my driver at the Airport in Deer Lake and I assume one man had left on Saturday for home. The guest that arrived on Sunday asked me about this upset irate client that was at the hotel in Deer Lake that had hunted with me at my Lodge and was still mad about his hunt here and he was banging on the windows to his friend to come on to get to the airport which was 5 minutes away and the friends was saying they had over 2 hrs. left before their plane was to leave. I just made a comment that in this world now you meet all kinds and some folks are all kinds. I had no problem with the other 3 hunters they said nothing to me about their hunt, staff or food and thanked me and left.

It is located in the middle of nowhere by a lake in the middle of a forest. The location is very beautiful. The lodge bulding is very well decorated with mounted trophies on the wall and a comfortable sitting room.

The food was well made, and should be for the nearest restaurant has to be at least 50 km away. We had dinner there one night and the food was delicious with a choice of several desserts. There was essentially no choice for the main course. Dining is communal, but everyone there was friendly and nice. For dinner the next day we were debating about going to a highly recommended restaurant in St. Anthony's or eating at the lodge, as the selection for that night did not appeal to us. They did offer to make an alternative.

The biggest problem for us was hearing our neighbors. They had booked a group of young folks in the room above us. You could hear every word and even see light thru the floor boards from the room above. Not only that you could hear when they used the toilet. I am a light sleeper so I was not happy. They were booked up, so there were no other rooms.

I really wanted to give this place more stars as the employees were the nicest people and very accommodating.
