Back to the the ”luxury” suite itself. Yes the room isn’t huge…Yes the furniture it antique..but the bed is comfortable. You are given the choice to go down To the sitting area to watch tv….there is a coffee machine there to grind the beans for each and every cup you enjoy. Did we mind driving the .6 km down the road for breakfast? Not for that kind we sure weren’t. Do I recommend this place? FOR SURE! Bill was very kind, generous and we will for sure be telling people about his place. When we return, and I hope it’s not another 15 years, we hope this place is still here.
Thanks Bill, very very much!!!
I often see reviews of B&Bs/small hotels that are negative because of limited desk hours, as has been done with this establishment. This is not a hotel. Do not expect it to operate one.
Also, as a childless couple, we appreciated the "no kids" rule. I know it's hard for couples with children to understand, but there's nothing like a screaming kid to ruin a childless couple's get-away.
Denise is a native to the area. Can recommend anything you need (food, activities, etc.). She also has great anecdotes of Cape Breton.
We were traveling with another couple and made reservations for two rooms several months in advance. We received a confirmation by email.
We were running late the day of arrival, so I called to tell them when we would be arriving. We were about 1.5 hours away. We were told our rooms were not available due to water damage. They said they were unable to reach us by email ahead of time. Obviously, we were upset and shocked by this news. They mentioned some other places in the area where we might find a room, but offered no other help.
We were frantic, but after a number of phone calls we were able to find a place that could offer us two rooms for three days.
I don't know where or why the breakdown in communication occurred, but it is very disturbing to have the rug pulled out from under you at the last minute like this.
It wasn't until we got back in the car and started to drive that we looked at each other and said, what do we do now ? If this is everyone's policy, do we sleep in the car ? I then turned to the GPS and called another place to inquire for a room and was told they were full, but we could try McIntyres Cottages. I called and was told they had a cottage vacant. I was then was very nicely advised that if we wanted the cabin, there was no power and one flush. :) I asked the price and agreed. I later found out after checking online, that not only did they provide us with accommodations, but they also did it at a reduced rate. Thank you once again "McIntyre's Cottages".
I would also like to mention that we were advised by the owner that: She called in the morning and left a message regarding the storm and also had sent us an email. Unfortunately I can not confirm either. We had no message on our answering machine or record of a phone call with our caller ID and in regards to the email, i can't find it either. However i do still have the confirmation email that was sent in August.
After thinking over the situation for the last few days I decided to call and inform the owner I was not happy with what went on. I didn't quite get the response I expected. To say the least it was not a pleasant conversation and the only goodbye I heard was the click of a telephone.
In closing one thing I would like to mention is that according to Denise Mulley, her insurance would not cover any accident that may happen if the power was out. This was the main reason should would not let us stay.
So I was quite surprised when we drive back through Baddeck that we did not see all the other people that were thrown out into the streets to sleep in their cars, due to the power outage!!!
PS - Here's something else interesting, our confirmation says $159.00 and their homepage says $120 - $149 guaranteed
