Oceanfront small resort offering onsite cafe, and fine dinning in the evening, while listening to the wave of the ocean. Open the door to beach suite #5 to modern beach house style, be greeted with puffy white beds made for dreaming as you listen to the ocean waves. Clean bright airy large rooms, open you window to the view of the ocean, feel the gentle breeze. If you need a snack, or to cool you drinks the room had retro mini fridge, coffee maker, tea kettle, microwave. Bathroom bright with shower/tub combo, lots of hot water, and fresh white towels, add little basket of toiletries incase you forgot some.
Find the Cafe open for breakfast through late lunch, fish tacos where great snack before grabbed my beach chair/book headed to the rock beach, I took a dip in the ocean and settled for afternoon of sun and waves.
Make sure you make your reservation early for The Bothy fine dinning in the evening, restaurant, decorated warm cozy, lighting sets the mood for evening of lingering, laughter, and enjoyment. Dinner for me was lobster mac and cheese it was delicious, order a bottle of Pinot or sample the drink menu, but do save room for a tasty dessert.
Be on the lookout for your server it may be Colin or Justin, they are hands on the business offering great hospitality. Truly, a great place to celebrate my bestie birthday.

The North Star resort is as lovely as promised - our room was very attractive and clean and the staff were very friendly. It's right outside the gates for Louisbourg and has lovely water views. But there were some drawbacks
The good: - very attractive and cosy room - absolutely delicious breakfasts in a super cute dining area (sadly only open for breakfast and lunch) -
The not-so good: - the walk in shower didn't have a single hook, soap dish or ledge. You either had to hold on to your bar of soap or leave it on the bathmat outside the shower!! Dangerous for less mobile or elderly guests and very easily remedied - we were in a 2 bedroom cabin #18 and the 2nd bedroom was fairly airless and the guests in there had to walk through the main bedroom to get to the bathroom - there were zero hangers or spaces to put a suitcase (let alone wet towels for 3-4 people!) - the property has lovely water views to enjoy but only very uncomfortable folding chairs to sit on - our experience in the main restaurant left a bit to be desired
Our complaints are all fairly minor and should be relatively easy to address. We still had a lovely stay and think it's the best option in Louisbourgh.

Had an amazing 2 night stay at the North Star recently. We were greeted by the charming Mrs M and were fortunate to be assigned an ocean view room (number 6), directly across from the heart sculpture. After a day of driving through Cape Breton, we opened the door to a sanctuary, filled with soft music, welcoming scents and comfortable beds. The view from the room was breathtaking. You could see the Fortress of Louisbourg (a must see!), loons and fishing boats returning to harbour. We enjoyed several meals on site during our stay and had the pleasure of interacting with our gracious hosts Colin and Justin throughout our time there. Would highly recommend as a destination not to be missed! Looking forward to a return trip soon!

The North Star is a truly a magical place in Louisbourg, Nova Scotia. From the warm welcomes at the front desk to the delicious breakfast the next morning, I cannot recommend this spot enough.
Our suite was stunning with a breathtaking view. We appreciated the modern, updated furnishings and loved that it still felt welcoming and cozy. And we loved that the suite had soft relaxing music as we entered. FYI: the suite came with the cutest retro mini fridge, a coffee maker (perfect for morning coffees on the balcony overlooking the water) and even a two burner stove. Perfect if you wanted to cook for yourself. But we did dinner and breakfast at North Star (which was delicious).
The beds were extremely comfortable with soft linens and the best pillows we have slept on during our entire trip in Nova Scotia.
Dinner at The Bothy was delicious with a great selection of local caught seafood. The wine menu is extensive and they even have a cocktail menu. I can't recommend the mussels with blue cheese enough - an unexpected combo that you will love. The live music was the perfect touch and created the feel of a local kitchen party.
Colin and Justin and their whole team made it all feel like our home away from home. We would visit again and recommend it to anyone who travels to Cape Breton. It's a must stop.

Right by the water with a real actual ocean view. We were very impressed by the lady on the desk who bent over backwards to make sure our trip was good as it was. The hotel was modernised last year so it's all very fresh, and our suite had a small kitchen so we did up our own lunches but had their breakfast (10/10) and ate in their dining room twice, again 10 out of 10. Give me a medium sized place like this any day over a big faceless chain type hotel or whatever. Lots of nice touches in rooms, a wow experience really. Outstandingly clean too.

I know this inn gets a lot of 5 star reviews and I would give it 5 stars for some things, but much fewer stars for other things. My husband and I had a first floor room facing the ocean. The room was very nice and the view was very nice. The room had a kitchenette which we did not use except to make a cup of tea. The decor was airy and light and restful. In addition, the room was immaculate, one of the cleanest rooms we have ever stayed in. However, I give the beds 2 stars. They were very firm and we both had trouble sleeping through the night. We were on a 2 week trip to the Maritime provinces and North Star was the only hotel we stayed at that did not have pillow top mattresses. All the other places were half the price of North Star. The other 2 star item is the toilet that is sized for children. My husband and I are average size people, but we are not young and trying to sit down on the low toliet was uncomfortable. The bathroom is small which probably could not be helped with the renovation of this property, but it could have been made more comfortable. We ate breakfast in the breakfast restaurant at this inn and it was good. We ate small breakfasts so we do not have much to comment on about this food. However, we did eat dinner several times in the Bothy Restaurant at the inn. Some of the food was very good and some of it was not. We would highly recommend the seafood chowder which was the best we had on our trip and we had seafood chowder in a number of restaurants. One of dinners my husband ordered should never have been allowed out of the kitchen! The seafood pasta dish was skimpy on the seafood. One of the disappointments at the restaurant is that there is only one choice of white wine by the glass and one choice of red. Most restaurants feature 4 or 5 choices of each. The location and the views of the town, the ocean, and the Louisburg Fortress are excellent.

When booking the site said that check in was between 3-7pm. Ok no problem when making the reservation was asked if I wished to make a reservation for dinner in the restaurant and I replied not sure would call when I knew. So driving and we receive a call at 2:45pm wondering when we were going to check in? Still driving of course!! Then was asked about making a reservation for supper again so my husband made a reservation. Check in was fine and they were friendly. We took a room with a view of the ocean. Views were amazing. Room was clean and beds comfortable. Bathroom was very basic and no room on the counter for anything. Our dinner was good but really a reservation was not needed as there were only 3-4 tables with diners in the place when we were there. I was woke up at 6am by whoever was renting the room above us by heavy footsteps back and forth and making coffee etc. Breakfast was not included in this price which we knew. So in my opinion this place has a lovely location but they are a little pushy and the room was not worth the price.

Colin and Justin have transformed this Inn into a must/stay venue. Everything has been totally renovated to a very high and tasteful standard. The main restaurant has gourmet offerings for all three meals and the adjacent bar and dining room has a very special ambiance.
Their location in front of the main gate to Fortress Louisbourg makes it an ideal stopover either to or from the fortress.
Not to be missed.

It starts with ‘dear’ or a simple ‘my dear’… and Cape Breton will open her heart to you…Well. HELLO, North Star! You are shining bright and welcoming on my last night in Cape Breton. What a week it has been travelling! So happy to have my last hurrah in such a warm and inviting space. Have you stayed with “The Boys”? Spectacular room with an Atlantic view, a fully equipped kitchen and a comfy sitting area complement a cozy bed with even more cozy linens.
Have a drink in their aptly named Spirit, the North Star* bar/lounge, while you wait for your table and a fabulous dinner at The Bothy (which means ‘shelter’ in Scottish parlance). From their website: (The Bothy) "resides in an enormous steel-framed barn. Lined with rough-hewn spruce logs, the arched building has a cavernous jet-toned ceiling and a huge window elevation designed to resemble a British railway station from the Victorian era." Apparently, you only need a fiddle and an upright (out-of-tune) piano to be happy in Cape Breton. And North Star makes you very happy with nightly entertainment from singers and songwriters and, if lucky, an impromptu song from Justin himself! And of course the staff! Fania takes the helm at the bar, and her sister, Mrs Julianna Rosanna Matilda Dolina MacDonald runs a tight North Star ship at front of house. Enjoy a hearty breakfast or lunch are in the bright and airy Coast and while there, do a wee shop in their gift shop.
And did you know? Just a short drive from The Fortress of Louisbourg, a National Parks Canada historic site, North Star*, is owned and operated by international designers Colin and Justin, whose shows have aired on HGTV and Cottage Life in Canada. They are the most gracious and generous hosts, shaking hands and pictures posed for (Colin and Justin support four local charities, so when you ask to have a photo snapped with them, they kindly ask that you donate to their wooden cash box in return).
Experience North Star's generous hospitality and warmth of heart. It's like being invited to a cool Cèilidh in Colin and Justin's kitchen! Just make sure you are on the invite list!

I highly recommend this hotel. My husband and I had a second-floor suite facing the ocean with private deck and view of Louisbourg fortress. Spotless modern well-appointed room with creative artwork and excellent design. Light wood, airy room with queen bed, couch , comfortable seating, top-of the line kitchen appliances and well- stocked kitchen cooking facilities. Welcoming, helpful, pleasant staff all enjoyed working with Colin and Justin who were ever-present , helping in kitchen, greeting guests at the Bothy bar and restaurant. Lunch was excellent in airy restaurant attached to reception and gift shop. Supper at the Bothy was delicious . The building is so creative and well-appointed. Truly original experience. The best cappuccino I’ve had in Nova Scotia. A stay at North Star Suites is a unique experience. Breakfast, lunch, brunch are delicious. A visit to the Bothy bar and restaurant is a must! Many thanks to Colin and Justin , Mrs. MacDonald and staff. We will stay longer next time.

Breakfast is NOT included in their rate when we were there in August. The rooms do not have A/C. Our room was ocean front. But on either side of us were rooms. Thus the only circulation we had was from the sliding door on the porch. And the room was VERY VERY hot and humid. Way too humid. We used a fan to suck in cooler evening air. Suggestion----make sure that your room has a wall window that opens. That may improve your sleep comfort. Oh, I think that for n $8 they provided breakfast. We thoroughly enjoyed the "Beggar's Dinner." Although our room had a frig and small microwave, there was no clock, no hair conditioner, and no luggage rack. If you tour the Fortress, find the Point of View's owner in her military costume.
We were there the end of July. The days were warm and the nights tended to cool off nicely. The suites are right on the water so there was always a slight breeze off the water that does drop the temperature a bit. I am not sure if they have ac, but did't need it.
I understand that in Florida you do need a/c's for comfort and sometimes survival but here in a more northern area we have a limited need for that convenience. We thought long and hard about putting a/c's in our units and opted to allow our guest the opportunity to let the cool ocean breeze refresh them and their rooms. We maybe have a few days where an a/c would come into use and for that reason we have portable units we install on request where needed, though we believe that would take away from the experience by the habit of shutting out the beauty and sounds of the ocean. We are in the later part of June and we are still in need of turning on the heat.
There are more places to choose from in the Louisbourg area.
