I had the delightful opportunity to spend the night at Laurel's this week. I was greeted by a wonderful human and her cat Roo, with a smile and a roaring wood stove fire. The house is big and airy with lovely comfy touches every where. My room had an ensuite bathroom with a claw foot tub, which I was grateful for after a long drive and intense evening. Breakfast was a Mediterranean Frittata, strong delicious coffee and the BEST Spelt bread ever, baked by the the gracious and entertaining host herself. If you get the chance to stay here, if nothing else, go for the toast!!! :D Seriously, I say with a happy heart, my stay here exceeded any expectations I may had. Thank you Laurel! Oh and by the way, the energy of the space is so welcoming that I had the deepest sleep I can remember for a long time.

Laurel was great to communicate with and was a lovely host. The room was nice and fairly spacious. Breakfasts were home cooked, large and delicious. Nice sitting area downstairs. Off street secure parking. Can definitely recommend.

Laurel is so warm and welcoming that we felt comfortable as soon as she opened the door into her lovely home. Our corner bedroom was beautiful with crisp white lines and a view of the countryside out the two bedroom windows. After an excellent night's sleep in the quiet room where gentle breezes kept us very comfortable, we awoke to an excellent home cooked breakfast including porridge Cape Breton style- with cream, a pat of butter and maple syrup - yum! Laurel's knowledge of the Mabou area, music and local textile artisans was both interesting and helpful. A perfect country retreat in Mabou.

Like cats on your breakfast table? Like peeling paint on the wall and stairwell? Like unfinished sheetrock in the doorway? Like an overgrown yard? Like taking a shower in a bathtub with no shower curtain?

If so, then this is the place for you! The food is good, the rooms are nice but in my view they don't make up for all the bad things.

Thank you for taking the time to write your review. All of my guests' observations and comments are a great help to me in providing a pleasant stay here. I don't know when you observed the cat on the table, but I appreciate your bringing it to my attention, and I apologize. If and when they are in the house, the cats are usually in the living room or in my quarters, but they are mostly outside during the warm weather. I will re-double my efforts to make sure this doesn't happen in the future. I hope to complete the finish work on the stairs and in the small entryway when no guests would be inconvenienced by the smell of paint. The side yard beside the deck to which you referred as overgrown is indeed full of wild rose and blackberry bushes. The flowers are lovely when they are blooming, and attract many birds and pollinators. At this time of year, however, it is all green and wild-looking. I keep the rest of the grounds around the house mowed and planted with flowers and flowering shrubs. The clawfoot tub in the ensuite bath has a hand-held shower to be used while seated in the tub. I apologize for your inconvenience. I have consulted with my plumber about how to accommodate my guests who would prefer a stand-up shower. The private bath with the Beaton Room has a full stand-up shower/tub combination for those who prefer it. I'm very glad your room was to your liking and you found the breakfast satisfying. Thank you for choosing to stay here, and I hope the rest of your trip around Cape Breton was enjoyable! Laurel

The B&B is located bout 3Km off Hwy 19 (the Ceilidh Trail) on 252.It is an older house built in 1850's, with several additions added later. It has only two guest rooms. We had the larger room with an en-suite. The bathroom was huge, but the shower is under a sloped roof with no headroom and no curtain, making showering quite difficult.. Floors are very squeaky and our bed-frame was very noisy. The other room is smaller and does not have an en-suite bath. The owner is vegetarian, and did not serve bacon or meat. Breakfast offered oatmeal, yogurt, scrambled eggs, toast and coffee. Compared to other B&B's we have stayed at in Nova Scotia, at $120.00 per night, this one is overpriced for what you get.

Thanks, Paul for taking the time to write your review. I'm so sorry you didn't have a pleasant stay here. I certainly enjoyed our conversation at breakfast. I didn't realise that the bed frame in your room was squeaky! (I don't sleep there). I will look into fixing this as soon as I finish writing this response. Squeaky floors- *sigh* it's an old house. You may have heard me trying to go quietly down the stairs; #6 and #7 are loud! Regarding the bathroom, when the previous owner did the house renovations, she installed the claw-foot tub with the hand-held shower with the idea that guests would sit, rather than stand, in the tub and therefore avoid trying to crouch under the slope wall and needing a shower curtain. As for your dissatisfaction with the breakfast menu, maybe you were taken by surprise- I do let folks know on the website that I serve a vegetarian breakfast (which includes fresh fruit as well as the items you mentioned). I have several different breakfast menus, all vegetarian (or vegan, if requested) and I use local, organic, ingredients, including free-range eggs. It's too bad you weren't here at the height of the garden season as I like to serve what I grow. Once again, please accept my apologies for your discomfort. If you wish, I will refund your room fee; please contact me with instructions. Regards, Laurel

Of the approximately twenty B and B’s we have stayed at, this was the most disappointing, perhaps in part because we thought it would be one the highlights of our most recent trip. As paying guests in someone’s home we understand that the home owner is entitled to ask for certain customs to be followed such as removing one’s shoes at the entrance. This however was the first and only B and B owner we have met who showed us to our room and then specifically asked us not to eat or drink in the room. Suddenly we felt like small children. We have never encountered this before and B and B owners we stayed with subsequently were extremely surprised with this request. Many of the rooms we have stayed in were actually equipped with small fridges. I think if this request is being made of guests it should be made clear on the website or in the confirming email or on the phone prior to the visit. On top of this we slept poorly due to the stuffy nature of the room. There is no air conditioning and the fan that was offered to us the next morning should have been in the room to begin with. Our room had stark white walls with absolutely nothing on them and the bathroom had no plug for either the tub or sink. There are no locks on the doors. Since I have no idea who else is staying in the house, I would prefer to have a key in my pocket. This is also the first B and B I have encountered that did not offer me a key for the door. Breakfast was excellent, but we left a night early for reasons stated previously . Read my other reviews to evaluate this one.

It's quite something when you arrive at your B&B after a long trip, to meet that unconditional welcome that only dogs can give. Hector just has that 'come on in' smile on his face and wag in his tail. This B&B is in the loveliest spot near Mabou - our host Laurel alerted us to a mother Bald Eagle and her eaglet just down the road, we watched hummingbirds flit in and out of the wonderfully perfumed shrub near the deck while we sipped a glass of wine as the sun sank below the hills. Laurel certainly provides the most delicious vegetarian and organic breakfasts, and it's quite something to wake up to the smells that waft up the staircase as you rise to start another day in this beautiful part of the world. We stayed three nights in this unique spot. Many thanks Laurel; coming to Mabou was one of our life's tick boxes and you helped us realise it.
Leigh and Scott, Nelson, New Zealand.

Based on TripAdvisor reviews we were looking forward to staying at this B and B but ended up being very disappointed. We did not find Laurel to be the perfect hostess she is depicted to be in other reviews and in fact found her to be much friendlier on the phone than she was in person. The B and B was nice although as an observation the entranceway looked like it was about to be painted and the main staircase that had been painted was badly chipped and worn. Laurel showed us to our room and let us know that although it was very hot it would cool down in the evening. It did not cool down and both of us had difficulty sleeping - we didn't expect air conditioning but a fan would have been appreciated. We were offered a fan the following day but by this point didn't want to stay another night. The room itself was fine and included the basics but neither of us found it as comfortable as other reviews stated. The bathroom was tiny. There was a note in the room letting us know eating and drinking was not permitted and this surprised us. We have stayed in many B and B's and hadn't encountered this before. We enjoy a glass of wine in our room at the end of the day and Laurel told us that although this wasn't permitted, we were welcome to relax in her livingroom . When we arrived back to the B and B at 9:30 that evening all was very quiet and we didn't feel comfortable sitting in Laurel's living area, not knowing where her room was and if we were disturbing her etc, We had never been given a tour of the house and had only been shown our room. We were also disturbed to find that we could clearly hear a conversation between two other guests from our room. The next morning we enjoyed our breakfast of oatmeal and eggs and had a great conversation with the two other guests but bottom line is we wouldn't recommend this B and B. My partner and I have stayed at many B and B's and I have reviewed quite a few of them; this is my first negative review.

Laurel's B&B is so comfortable, I gladly could have moved in! Breakfast was tasty and wholesome -- Laurel's commitment to organic food and buying from local food producers, not to mention her great cooking ability, makes the second B of B&B a very important part of her business. I loved sleeping in the four-poster bed with the perfect mattress in a spacious bedroom with lots of light coming in the windows in the morning. The also spacious ensuite bathroom made the experience one that royalty would enjoy. This century home has been beautifully and expertly renovated, yet not modernized in style, thus keeping the character of the original home intact. Laurel obviously enjoys people, and her hospitality, humour and warmth give guests the feeling that they are family visitors. And Hector the dog is mellow and welcoming, too.

We stayed her one night on our trip. It was lovely. The first welcome was by the cats in the garden, closely followed by Laurel who greeted us in gaelic. Our room was delightful and the surrounding grounds quiet and peaceful. Our breakfast was delicious, organic and tasty. Laurel was a fount of knowledge of the surrounding area, guiding us to music and food.
We were not bothered by the work in progress in the entrance believing in substance over style.

Hi are you guys pet friendly?
Answer from Laurel B
Mabou, Canada
Hi Susan! Thanks for your enquiry. This is a pet-friendly B&B, as long as your pet(s) are socialized to other animals, and under obedience. I have never had any issues with pet visitors, since most travellers are very caring and responsible. I have a dog and 2 cats here, all very friendly. The cats get a little skittish around new dogs, but the dog is very welcoming. Looking forward to your reply! Laurel
