This place is magic - I’ve never had such a relaxing getaway. Whether it’s hiking or fishing on the wooded trail alongside a gurgling river, sipping coffee on the cabin porch in complete solitude, or sampling some of the finest cuisine at the lodge restaurant for dinner; you will leave here with a rejuvenated soul. Great Intervale Lodge renewed my spirit, and I can see why visitors revisit this place year-after-year once they discover this lodge tucked perfected in a river gorge in the heart of Cape Breton.

We arrived very late on our first night to this lodge in the dark and wondered if we would ever get there on the dark , bumpy road. I will just say that it is worth the drive back for this quaint, hospitable place. We were greeted by Herman who offered us a beer and showed us to our cabin/duplex. The accomodations are not luxurious but very clean and roomy. The grounds are beautiful and you can sit on your porch and hear the river running past while reading a book or sit by a fire pit provided by the hosts. We were not bothered by noise from the adjoining duplex. The food was wonderful and plentiful. We had 5 breakfasts ( Awesome French toast) and one dinner.
We are experienced flyfisherman and did not plan on this being a "fishing trip" but did take a day to practice about 1000 casts to salmon who were not at all interested in anything we had to show them..but it was August and the day and river were beautiful. Go back in spring and fall I am told.
The best part of this place is the hosts. Ruth had a wonderful knowledge of area" goings on " and put us on to some wonderful ceilehs ( local Breton/Scottish music) and other local attractions. You are right off the Cabot Trail here and we were able to easily daytrip to all of the places we wanted to see. I just wish we had time to see more. Should we go back to Cape Breton we would love to stay with Herman and Ruth again.

This is my all time favorite place to eat. The food is always good and lots of it. The owners go out of their way to make sure you enjoy your time there. The atmosphere is so cozy, especially during the fall and winter. They make the best wings and steak EVER!!!, My husband loves their scallops you get about 9 huge ones served with a creamy sauce.

We stopped in for dinner during a recent salmon fishing expedition, we asked one of our group to go in to inquire about a table. At the time there was only 1 out of 10 tables occupied and we were told that they were full and could not serve us. We accepted that, and moved on to a nearby establishment. We related our experience to the owners and he informed us that because some members of our party were from the Mik'maq community, they would not serve us. Later that day we had another encounter with the owner of the Big Intervale Fishing Lodge, where he accused us of illegal fishing and berated our chief and was very belligerent. It was very unsettling to learn that this sort of behaviour is still occurring and that we would be treated in this way due to the race of some of our group. Just a heads up to anyone non-Caucasian hoping to enjoy dinner here.

My son and I spent the weekend at the lodge using their "discover fly fishing package" and we had a great time from the moment we arrived. Access is by way of a 16km dirt road. Don't use Google maps as it is wrong. Ask for directions from the lodge. The main lodge is bright and modern with a lounge area, small bar and a great dining room. We found that people drive there just for the food. Our favourite was their steak. The cabins themselves are duplexes, clean and simple with satellite TV, electric heat and a smallish bathroom. They have three cabins for a total of six rooms. Your hosts are Ruth and Hermann and their hospitality is first rate. The fishing guide provided by the lodge was very good, enthusiastic, and knew where the fish were. It is quite stimulating to fish pools where you can actually see fish!

The location : in a valley, you see little falls, calm
The room : big and very nice.
The owners : sweet and helpful
We took the "discover fly fishing package". It was an interesting experience, and I appreciate that we didn't need to care to anything, the owners prepared everything for us.
Moreover you eat very well!!!! It's like paradize!!!! I recommend this place.

Twelve of us enjoyed dining at Big Intervale on Saturday, Feb 16, 2013. If you say you have dined at Big Intervale, everybody in Cape Breton knows that you mean the Big Intervale Fishing Lodge. There is no other restaurant for miles around!
Of course you have to phone ahead to make a reservation, then it just over an hour's drive from Baddeck. It is always a scenic drive and at this time of year it is a winter wonderland, with more and more snow as you get closer to the lodge beside the Margaree River in its valley tucking into the Highlands.
The owners, Ruth and Hermann, greet you warmly and serve their tasty bruchetta as you enjoy the cozy lounge and choose from the menu.
Hermann is the chef, and all the food is excellent. It ranges from hamburgers and fries, to steak, salmon, scallops, chicken and pork. The soups, salads and desserts are also always delicious.
It is an informal setting, no need to dress up, and at this time of year many snowmobilers are welcomed following a specially groomed trail system.
Dining at the lodge is a unique experience, and one which you will look forward to enjoying at any season of the year.

Hermann and Ruth made my Mum's 73rd Birthday and our tour of the Cabot Trail something to remember. Rooms were clean and we all slept well, nothing fancy but cosy with Satellite TV, Hot Showers and loads of room for us in the grounds for our two JRT's who raced around and explored to their little hearts' content !. Hermann and George spent an hour or so playing some Golf with my Dad and made his trip memorable too.

The food is just superb, fresh, perfectly seasoned and good value. I will be back here again, 100% certain. If I can i will try to stay longer next time. I will be passing around this little gem to all my fishing friends in NS and CB. Right on the Margaree, close to the Hatchery pool and very secluded/quiet. DO NOT MISS EATING HERE!!..

My partner and I spent two days and one night at the Big Intervale Fishing Lodge and loved it so much that we're already planning on going back for a longer visit. We spent our first night on Cape Breton Island here and couldn't not have asked for a more peaceful antidote to our usual busy urban lives.

The lodge is an old fishing lodge right on the the river with comfy cabins scattered throughout the property. It is run by a super sweet Swiss family who totally renovated the place, and added a homey restaurant with the best food we ate our whole trip and maybe the best breakfast I've had. Everything was fresh, locally grown and perfectly cooked. The family's children were super cute and disappointed we didn't bring any kids for them to play with.

The lodge is about a 15-20 min drive from the Cabot Trail most of which is on a dirt road. As dirt roads go, it's it's really well maintained. There were many closer places, but Big Intervale was magical and isolated, surrounded by moutains and flowers with no houses in sight, it felt like paradise. The cabins are basic and rustic but comfortable. Big Intervale seemed to be more of a traditional fishing and hunters getaway, but in the off season it was empty, cheap and gorgeous with the river just a few steps away. The owners said most of the guests are hobby fly fishermen from Halifax or locals who come in for the day. As tourists from the states, we were clearly unusual, but felt very welcome. The furnishing and amenities were a weird blend between inexpensive and well designed. There was satelite Tv, but a small television; a coffee maker but cheap coffee; a comfy bed but no top sheets.

After driving around the island and seeing how isolated it is outside major towns, having a great restaurant right there was really lucky. I'd reccomend this place for a retreat especially and for families with kids.

This place was just what we were looking for: off the beaten track, and spectacularly beautiful and serene. Comfortable well designed room, warm and highly informative and helpful hosts, and delicious food. Looking forward to coming back for a longer stay, with fishing rods. We really felt we were away from it all when we stayed here, Bravo to the hosts!
