Such a nice little place. Great energy. The host Nancy was very accommodating and had great tips. Perfect location to start your drive along the trail. Beautiful views with fire pit overlooking the lake.

We stayed here two nights as we traveled the Cabot Trail and could not be happier! The owners are extremely friendly and helpful! The place is very clean and there is lots to do near by. If you happen to get bad weather, there are plenty of games to play inside, and, even Netflix! I would highly recommend booking your stay here!

* Also, if you book with Hi Hosteling International, be aware that you pay a deposit when booking online! Make sure that you don't pay this twice :)

I stayed at Bear on the Lake on two different occasions in June and July of 2012. My times there were unique in that I was hosting groups of 15-20 young teenagers and their chaperons. We filled every room. It's the cleanest hostel I've ever stayed in (and I stay in many of them because of my work). Quiet. An excellent location from which you can easily check out the Cabot Trail, Mabou Highlands, Bras d'Or Lake, et cetera. I would wholeheartedly recommend it for anyone traveling in and around Cape Breton. Give it a couple days at least.

Most of the reviews here mention Carman--for good reason: he's a great host, and will go far out of his way to make sure you have a pleasant stay. I have one particular anecdote that exemplifies the level of his service. My group had rented a couple of vans and one of them broke down. We had planned to make a day trip, but waiting for the rental company to drive the new van up to BotL (BotL is about 3.5 hrs from Halifax) was going to force us to change our plans. Carman offered to drive his van, so that we didn't have to split our group. "Offered to drive" meant: change his entire day to make sure that we got to where we needed to go. Truly amazing service. And as other reviews have mentioned, he's friendly, knowledgeable, and all that.

When I'm not traveling with groups, hostels are generally not my first choice for accommodations. Bear on the Lake, however, is a very exceptional kind of exception--one which I hope to return with not only future groups, but my family as well.

Room Tip: You can't really go wrong with any room, though I would recommend the private rooms upstairs.

I am the new owner of the Bear on the Lake and I am for sure running it as a hostel. Looking forward to my first season opening on May 1st. The only changes are hopefully positive ones as we have been busy with renos. We are already half booked up with lots of exciting new guests to meet... hope you can join us!!

Quiet, almost secluded location - however busy trucks on road at night. Staff are v friendly and helpful. One day may be enough here and then drive on up the island! Place is clean! Beds are grand. Good powerful shower! Nay impressed with the 3% surcharge on credit card payments (not stated prior to our arrival).

Four of us rented the two private rooms for two separate nights, and our stay was wonderful. Nice rooms (basic but very clean), separate common area with own deck and good view out to the lake for the two private rooms, very friendly staff (special thanks to Christiane, the assistant manager, who was welcoming and helpful), and a good kitchen/common area, where we enjoyed talking to folks from a variety of countries. We will stay here again the next time we're visiting Cape Breton Island.

I stayed here 2 nights in late September. It was a fantastic experience. The place is really clean with nice comfy beds. In the evenings the place is alive with people...everyone getting together to talk about their various daytime activities. Carman is a great host...he even took me hiking! I cannot recommend this place enough! It has amazing views over Bras D'Or lake and is only a short drive to some of the local hikes and nearby towns.

This hostel was everything that a great hostel is - nice and small, a few connected, yet separate common rooms, a big dining table that helps to produce great conversation between people staying, and a nice big kitchen. There was a book share and the beds were comfy with nice linen. Super friendly manager.

We stayed at this hostel for one night in a private room. Carman was very friendly and welcoming and his hostel has a really nice atmosphere. The room was lovely, and the bed very comfy! The lounge and balcony that we shared with the other private room upstairs have a nice view of the lake. We met some friendly people also staying at the hostel, and definitely recommend you stay here on your trip to beautiful Cape Breton!
