I attended a funeral at The Meeting Place in August 2023. I had seen the space once before, but only when it was empty. This was the first time I had seen it used for an event. Honestly, it was the most beautiful, tasteful venue in which I have ever attended a funeral (and I have attended 87 funerals around the world, over the past decades).

It was built in the 1850s by Methodists, used for religious reasons until the 1920s, then was a house for many years until its current owners bought and restored it (this might not seem old to you European readers but in Canada, these dates make it a special, historical building). The simplicity, history, spirituality resonated with me in a profound way. Make sure you look out for the small areas of vintage wallpaper, up high near the ceiling, that were uncovered and preserved in the restoration process... the kind of exquisite vintage detail that makes this place so special. (I didn't take any photos because I think that would be tacky at a funeral).

I honestly cannot imagine a lovelier place for a special event.

Gorgeous room! I always have a hard time
sleeping in a hotel room, but this was the first time in my life that I slept like a baby. I have stayed in places all over the US and Canada and this is the first time I wanted to take the bed home with me!

Very clean, very quiet. Bathroom shower was wonderful.

Heads up the cafe is closed and this property is at another building slightly down the road from the building with The Grafton Inn sign. The property owner will contact you with the exact address before you leave. The owners were responsive and helpful.

We just decided to drop by after most of the rooms were already booked in Cobourg! Wow, we really didn't expect this type of accommodation in the middle of nowhere! They have a bed and breakfast package for between $140-160 and the rooms in the next building are outstanding. There isn't much to do, so bring a book and relax and enjoy this small town hospitality. There are some nice daytrips in the area if you want to do some driving, otherwise camp out in the room and enjoy the restaurant. This place felt like a St. Annes for half the price! Best room is the honeymoon on the top floor, high ceilings, comfy beds and everything else to help you relax! Very quiet this time of year! We would return in a heartbeat!

My husband and I were looking for a quiet weekend get-away out of the city that wasn't too far and this was perfect. The drive was effortless, we left Toronto at about 9am on a Saturday and arrived in an hour and a half. The rooms were quite modern with the most comfortable pillows and duvet! There's nothing better than a good night's sleep for me, so this was very important and I felt like I was in a Four Seasons Hotel. The grounds are well-kept, manicured lawns and a very cute creek/garden area behind the main Inn building. The food at the Inn was very good, the menu boasts locally grown produce and meat comes from the farms nearby. My husband had a burger and I had the soup and BLT, which left me full until dinner. The staff was quite friendly and there was a mix of families, couples (both old and young) filling the dining room. If you are looking for a quiet, relaxing destination - this is it. Coburg is nearby with beaches and cute shops. I would definitely recommend stopping here for lunch if you're on your way to Prince Edward County.

My husband and I stayed in the guesthouse for one night. The room was newly renovated and lovely. Breakfast at the inn the next morning was included - good food, well presented. Quiet, beautiful with friendly staff.

The response from the hotel staff member, Sandra Walls, goes into great detail about all the charms of the hotel -- a/c, TV, lamps -- that was not the gist of the complaint. Within ten minutes of arriving the woman staff member became angry at a simple request. After the manager helped us out there was no communication for two days, even on departure day.

We asked for ice as there was a heat wave. The staff member replied that this was a small inn and there was no ice maker. We said, surely you have ice in the kitchen – the hotel has a restaurant. She insisted there was no ice in the kitchen. We objected and she angrily turned on her heel and walked away. Eventually a small bag of ice was produced. There was only one lamp between two beds far apart. We asked for an extra lamp so we would each have a reading lamp and the manager brought an one. Our room was not serviced on the second day and no extra towels were provided. The phone did not work. Using my cell phone I called the manager who had given us TWO numbers where he could be reached. No one answered the phone. We were warned that the main door lock on our annex accommodation was difficult to operate and it was unacceptable that we had to struggle several times to get into the unit.

No, we did not look the inn up on the web, and were not informed on booking that the main building and restaurant would be closed during our entire visit and thus no services would be available. Fortunately, the pizza at the gas station across the street was very good. We feel we are owed a reduction on our bill.

On my recommendation, an elderly pair of ladies checked in to The Grafton Village Inn over Labour Day weekend. They were not informed when they booked that the restaurant would be closed and that there would be no hotel service. No clean towels, no beds made, no ice! This during a heatwave. These two women had to fend for themselves, with not a single staff person to assist them, call them a taxi or advise them where to find meals. Appalling treatment. Although we have a country home nearby and have recommended visitors stay there in the past, we will no longer being do so.

Response from Peter K, Guest Relations Manager at The Grafton Village Inn
Responded Sep 16, 2015
Our Response: I cannot comment on what questions were asked and what information was provided during the booking of this accommodation, as I was not with Grafton Village Inn, at that time. However, I can comment that both myself and the Inn's Manager were present when these ladies arrived by taxi to check into their Twin Room at the Inn. Their bags were carried to their room at our Guest House. Although we do not have an ice machine on our premises, each room does have A/C, coffee/tea, mini fridge, TV/Satellite, iron, hairdryer, towels warmers, etc. When the guests requested "ice" to place in the mini fridge, the Manager did make a special trip to obtain ice for them. The Manager also retrieved a second lamp for their convenience and upon their request, and placed it into the twin room. The Manger also went and made photocopies for their personal use, upon request. Extra towels were provided, prior to their arrival as we were aware that the booking was for two nights. And, I can assure you that they were clean. We have telephones in each room and an information sheet with all contact numbers, including that of a taxi company, if needed. Our website does clearly indicate our hours and in fact, we were open when the guests arrived hours earlier and they had staff hold their luggage as they didn't have time to properly check-in at that time. We are not a large, franchised hotel or motel, we are an Inn. We provide privacy, peace and quiet and elegant and clean accommodation in a rural environment. It is unfortunate that our guests did not enjoy their stay with us but I can promise that staff went above and beyond to accommodate. At least part of the onus is upon the guest and those who suggest an accommodation, to ensure such is appropriate for the guests expectations. Sandra Walls, Accommodations/Event Coordinator & Administrative Assistant

My husband and I stopped here for lunch yesterday and were surprised to be disappointed. In the past everything had been delicious but not so yesterday. My husband said his caramalized onion galette was bland, my wild mushroom one was okay. Thank goodness the fire roasted tomato soup was include as it was delicious with wonderful complex flavours. Service was okay too with multiple extra trips required to bring coffee spoons, then milk, and then soup spoons. Past visits we found the menu to be much more interesting.

My daughter and i stayed here to visit with some family and I was very impressed. The room was beautiful, clean and competely updated.
Bed was really comfortable, very quiet and very nice area.
The room included breakfast which was fantastic! I had the bacon and eggs and my daughter had french toast which came out looking like a cake. It was massive with baked apples in between the bread with maple syrup.

Would highly recommend this property if you're in Grafton.
The area is really pretty especially at this time of year with all the leaves changing colour. A couple of cute shops in town but really nothing else to do. We ended up driving to the lake and spent some time there.

Our room was fresh, tastefully decorated and so airy with the high ceilings and beautiful trim. The bed was comfortable, the water pressure was great and the Keurig in the hallway was convenient. The floor to ceiling curtains in the room gave an elegant touch and the dimmable reading lamps mounted over the sides of the bed were perfect. We like to read on vacation, so the unobtrusive tv on the far wall was appreciated. There is easy access to the 401. There is a store almost directly across the street that may appear small on the outside but is very large and well stocked on the inside. I was very surprised and it was open until 11 pm!. We were not in the main building where the restaurant is currently being remodeled. I saw the restaurant and it is almost finished. Stunning compared to many Inns I have seen. Architecturally this is a beautiful building and it is being restored to its original look. And you couldn't ask for friendlier, more accommodating people than Peter and Kim. I can highly recommend the Inn and we will stay there again.
