We have travelled extensively internationally for the past 40 years and in recent years used many B&Bs at home and abroad.
We were very fortunate to spend our first 9 days in Canada in Sept 2013 with our hosts Verena and Bernie at Homestead House. From our first email contact many months ago when inquiring/booking their customer service and enthusiasm for the business and their own B&B shone through. On arrival and throughout they were very welcoming, friendly and helpful without being too involved.
All aspects of their B&B we found of a very high standard: cleanliness (based on Swizz backgrounds), presentation, attention to detail and the little things (like door hanging hooks, providing a door sausage to keep out light, etc).
The breakfasts are something else – great variety each day and fantastic.
They are very knowledgeable of their area and willing to assist.
They are in a very fortunate location being close to both business associated with the Hamilton area and Airport plus major Tourism attractions including of coarse Niagara Fall sand the 6 Nations area etc. However they are in a quiet spot (and we greatly dislike noisy/busy environments accommodation).
Over our 9 days we really enjoyed meeting other guests and spending time over the great breakfast - both business people and holiday makers.
They were kind enough to ask us to join them at their personal family Labour Day get together.
We departed feeling like we had very interested friends and would highly recommend this B&B.
It is definitely one of the best B&Bs we have been fortunate to stay at.

Thanks Kev & Sandra

I stayed at the Homestead Guest House for eight days over the end of July and the beginning of August this year. Bernie and Verena are perfect hosts. By the end of my stay I felt more like a member of their family than a paying guest. They shared their local knowledge with me and advised me on points of interest that, as an overseas visitor, I may not otherwise have seen. My room was comfortable and the breakfast set me up for the day. Their Guest House is on a good bus route into Hamilton which serves as a hub for Toronto and Niagara Falls. I would definitely stay with them again and would recommend them without reservation.

From the day I made the reservation to the day we checked out, our experience with Homestead House could not have been better. Even before I completed my reservation process, Bernie answered my questions almost immediately via e-mail. (We wanted a place to store our bicycles and he said "No problem!")

Verena met us at the door when we arrived and welcomed us to our home for three days.

We stayed in the Red Room, which has a comfortable queen-size bed, a chair with ottoman, two bedside tables, and a dresser. The lighting in the room is adequate for anything from watching TV to reading. The bathroom appears to be a converted closet. It's not large, but certainly adequate. And the curved glass block wall enclosing the shower is unique and attractive.

The B&B is a few hundred metres from Upper James Street, which can take you through areas of retail, restaurants, open fields, and who knows what else. But you're not out in the middle of nowhere. In fact, you are no more than 20 minutes from the centre of Hamilton. Although we drove, we were amazed at the B&B's proximity to the Hamilton airport. It is, quite literally, just down the street. (Although we couldn't hear any airplanes from inside our room, so I wouldn't worry about noise being a problem.)

As noted by others, the breakfasts were wonderful. Yes, the food was good, but the company of other guests and Verena and Bernie made all the difference. Sharing good conversation, interesting experiences, and good coffee make for a great start to the day.

Finally, I cannot say enough about the hospitality of Verena and Bernie. From recommendations for our biking excursion, to advice on parking in Hamilton, to accommodating guests' requests, they could not have been nicer. (Bernie even drove one guest to the airport, in lieu of calling a taxi, to pick up his rental car. Something like that is not required, but certainly appreciated.)

If you are looking for a home away from home in Hamilton, you would do well to visit Homestead House.

Room not as pictured! No closet. No room for a suitcase.
Eating area, was a kitchen table in the living room.
"Ensuite" bathroom was in a step up closet.
No key given for room.
Wall to wall carpet old, not antique, very dated.
Paid for my stay, felt deceived, but would not dare stay.
Was embarrassed for my travelling companion.

Response from BernhardTschan, Owner at Homestead House Bed & Breakfast
Responded Feb 1, 2017
Well, what can we say? I think the record says it all - I remember the female guest from lower Sackville NS - she specifically asked for the "Pine Room" with two single beds as shown on our website - she arrived with her female friend, checked out the room and everything seemed OK - they then decided to go for coffee nearby - Upon returning back about half an hour later, the primary guest told us that her cousin from out-of-town just called her and suggested to stay at her place instead of our B&B - We said, no problem, however reminded her about our cancellation policy which we emailed to her with our confirmation #, which clearly states: NO refund, if cancelled less than 72 hours prior to check-in - Obviously, the now very disgruntled guest wrote this rather nasty review - well, all we can say is: 99% of all of our guests absolutely love our Century old B&B with lots of character - and by the way - the so-called kitchen table in the Living room is a $1100.00 Italian made Cherry wood table with glass top! As they say: you can't win them all - Best regards, Bernie + Verena Tschan, Mount Hope, Ontario, Canada

Homestead House was a great find. It is comfortable and provides everything you need at a reasonable price. Go through them directly to book as they give the best rate over any of your advertising companies. Owners Verbena and Bernie are wonderful people and very helpful. Verbena is a good cook and the breakfasts are impressive...cooked breakfast plus an assortment of other foods set out like cereal, fresh fruit, jams, etc. This is an 100 year old house, so do not expect modern or too roomy. Rooms are average bedroom size, all with a small bathroom included. Bed was very comfortable and I personally was quite comfortable there in every way. I would gladly return. PS- Verbena knew I was going on a hike and put a muffin in a bag for me to take with me!

We spent two nights at Homestead House and would love to go back! Everything you read about Bernie and Verena is true and then some. They are warm, gracious and friendly, and truly make you feel like guests and friends rather than customers. Bernie gave us great advice on places to eat and things to do, as well as providing us with maps and brochures. Verena makes an amazing breakfast. You come down to a delightful spread of fresh bread, homemade preserves, cheeses and fruit, and that is just for starters! She knew we were vegetarians, and one morning made the most amazing pancakes with sauteed fruit.

The room was clean, coxy and comfortable, with private bath. The house is VERY quiet, yet conveniently located for exploring Hamilton (which is a very nice city, with historic sites, waterfalls etc.) It is also a great value. Share a couple days with Bernie and Verena, you will not be disappointed!

My wife and I stayed at the Homestead House over the weekend and we had one of the best times of our trips all over the world. Our hosts Verena and Bernie were incredibly friendly, accomodating with their hospitality during our stay. Our room was very cosy, clean and comfortable. Our breakfast was prepared from local, fresh fruits and cheeses and we were woken up with the inviting aroma of fresh coffee and incredible freshly baked croissants.
The Homestead House is located close to Bruce Trail, Hamilton Airport, Aviation Museum, many Incredible Waterfalls nearby at towns of Ancaster and Dundas close to the Niagara Escarpment with beautiful nature trails.
Also nearby are Niagara Falls, beautiful quaint Historical Town of Niagara-on-the-Lake, Famous Art gallery at the Six Nations Reserve, Famous Ontario Wineries and their Great Wine Tasting, Niagara Butterfly Conservatory and Botanical Gardens, Shaw Festival and many many other wonders of Beautiful Ontario.
Visit to the Homestead House will let you enjoy a World-of-a-Time exploring all these Wonders and experience the friendly wonderful Hospitality of your Hosts at your stay in this great Bed and Breakfast! Highly recommend to all who wish to visit. We will be back again soon.

We stayed over at Homestead House last Saturday night after our midnight flight to Hamilton from Cancun. It was SO convenient - we live 3 hours from Hamilton and I was worried about the weather, and about driving after a long flight, so I emailed Homestead House through BBCanada.com a couple of days before we left. Bernie was so accommodating - we dropped our friends and luggage off at the airport, drove 5 minutes to Homestead House, and Bernie then drove us back to the airport so we could leave our car there for two weeks and save on parking. (They charge a low rate.) When we arrived back in Hamilton, we just phoned Bernie from the terminal and he was waiting outside for us when we came out with our luggage! Beds were very clean and comfortable with small ensuite bathrooms. The next morning, Verena prepared a marvellous breakfast - bacon, sausage, eggs your way, a variety of pastries and breads, fruit salad, yogurt, fresh oj, coffee and tea. Hosts Verena and Bernie are friendly and personable. We will definitely return next winter!

I had my first experiance at The Homestead House Bed & Breakfast. The Host, Bernie & Verena made my stay very comfortable. The rooms are nice size and the beds are very comfortable. The Homestead House sits in a quite neighborhood out by the Hamilton airport. The breakfast is excellent and good size. I would definitly stay there again the next time I'm in the area.

Was flighting into Hamilton after midnight and Bernie was there to pick me up. Next morning Verena had a great breakfast laid out. Cerel, Bagals, Cheese, Fresh Fruit, coffee, muffins. She even offered to make eggs if I liked. They drove me to a restaurant and car rental. The room was small but very cozy with phone, wireless internet, clock radio, shower. I would recommend this place to anyone.
