A stay to remember! During my recent trip to Saugeen shores and Tobermory I chose to stay at Holiday Inn Express & Suites - Port Elgin. A brand new hotel located in Bruce County on the shores of Lake Huron. Port Elgin, renowned for its beaches and magnificent sunsets. We were greeted by Ms Susan at the front desk who was quick to check us in and provide with necessary information. The hotel main features are the ample amount of parking available on site, a business centre, an indoor pool and fitness centre for recreation and the biggest highlight is the buffet breakfast. Onsite for the guest laundry service is available as well. Coming to the Express breakfast - located at the lobby has everything that you need to kick start your day. Each and every item was delicious and hence must not miss it! In terms of the room we had the Queen bed room with 2 Queen beds side to side , the room was spacious with a large window facing the back side of the hotel - enough to enjoy the beautiful skies while sipping on a hot drink. The room was comfortable and offered a coffee station, microwave among the other basic essentials. The bed, duvet and plush pillows guaranteed a good night sleep. What you need to know around the area - Port Elgin’s Main Beach Park and playground, a 2 km distance from the hotel, offers a sandy beach, picnic areas, and children’s playground. The nearby Woodland trail, one of many local trails , is perfect for walking, cycling, snowshoeing, or cross-country skiing Overall enjoyed my stay at the Holiday Inn Express & Suites - Port Elgin. Their rates are very reasonable and amazing experience to top it!

Stayed at this hotel for many weeks this summer (since April 2021) for work so I know it very well. The positives first: Staff are really very good from the manager (Trevor) on down they are great people and looked after me well. Rooms are clean and modern. Did not use the pool but it looked clean. The fitness room too was clean and modern although I did not use that either. Equipment seemed limited. Breakfast is free with good variety of both hot and cold items. And the staff that prepare it are top notch and very helpful and friendly. (More on this later). There is a small patio out back where you can watch sunsets which can be spectacular. Not a cheap hotel (around $750 for 4 nights...actual price including all the add-ons) and rather overpriced for the amenities offered. And so to the negatives: I am not a complainer - quite the opposite in fact...generally tolerant of things over which management and staff has little control (noisy kids at 2 am in the morning for example!!! or party going workers letting off steam in another instance). However I wonder who thought it was a good idea to put the air conditioners/heater INSIDE the room . They are very noisy. I normally sleep like a log but laid awake many nights listening to the sound of air conditioning fluid gurgling through the pipes and the drone of the HVAC pumps and blowers. Noisier than a power plant. As Jeff has alluded to below when the power goes out there is no standby generator for the hotel. For a brand new hotel in an area prone to severe weather (tornados, high winds, heavy snow and blizzards) I was very surprised that it did not have one. Fumbiing my way up the stairs by flashlight light after all the exit lights stopped working was quite tricky. The staff were great of course but investment in a generator would make a whole lot of sense for this facility....and would avoid people getting stuck in the elevator...they stopped working too. Fortunately this did not occur in the middle of winter. otherwise we would have added frozen guests to the list of fun in the dark activities. The beds are comfortable but I am short and my feet were right at the edge of the bed so if you were 6 foot you might want to sleep sideways as the king beds seem wider than they are long. The Keurig coffee machines seem to have been cleaned with chlorine bleach. Even using bottled water the tea and coffee tasted like pool water and I had to discard it. Brought in my own kettle as a result. Tea and coffee are provided but sachets of powdered milk only no real milk. A bit on the cheap side for the nightly price in my humble opinion. A fridge is provided...small but functional for one or two people. And last but not least I was told that I could not eat in the breakfast area unless I showed my "vaccine passport"....whatever that is. While I do understand the manager is following what the Province apparently has mandated (a copy of the Government Mandate would have been useful) being turned away by a staff deputation standing in front of the breakfast area in the morning when trying t get breakfast before work is, perhaps, not the most diplomatic way of doing that. It was to say the least offensive. I was told I could eat in my room though...a .joyful experience I am sure. A note under the door to warn patrons would have been useful and a better way to manage the problem so we could be prepared. Of course I will not stay anywhere where I am not wanted....so after fifteen weeks of being (what I thought) was a good customer of this hotel I have left. I do hope this is helpful for future patrons and presents an honest and open critique of the hotel. It is nice and shiny and new but out of the main town centre of Port Elgin (not within walking distance). Shoppers Drug Mart opposite and a grocery store next door (who did invest in a generator by the way) but not much else around. No restaurants (some good ones in town though) and a pizza outlet and that is about it. It is kinda stuck in the middle of a field really...hopefully some other facilities are built to correct that but for now it is in the middle of nowhere. Check the location on Google Earth (satellite view) to verify before you book. Big condo development next door and a housing development behind and quite a long way from Lake Huron.

U3917XVmalcolmr, Thank you so much for taking the time and providing us with a very detailed review of your stays with us over the past 15 weeks. It was truly a pleasure having you calling our Hotel home away from home and we were very sad to see you leave. We did our best over your stays to make sure you always had complimentary upgrades, and the best corporate rate available during all weeks. I was disappointed to see many of your negative comments but the last part of your review I felt was uncalled for. We have signage all over the property in relation to all public health measures we are taking and also what the government of Ontario has mandated. Since September 22nd we have been required to have customers provide either a medical exemption or proof of COVID 19 vaccinations to access certain areas of our facility, Indoor dining, fitness room and our indoor pool do require this documentation. I truly believe our Ontario government has done a brilliant job at getting the word out on these new requirements and when they were coming into place. Our staff will continue to follow provincial guidelines that are in place to protect you, other guest, myself and our entire staff group. Lets hope we can get through this situation safely and without any further pushback. We wish you great health and hope you have a chance to come and stay in our beautifully located hotel in Port Elgin real soon. Yours in Hospitality, Trevor Raynsford, General Manager

Stayed here one night on business in September. I had seen this property but the summer in season rates were always high. Finally had the chance to try. Unfortunately, there was a large storm upon my arrival and the hotel had a power outage for the entire time I was there. No fault of the hotel but they were absolutely tested here to the max and their staff were super. The lady at the front desk when I checked in was the same lady in the morning. It appeared she had stayed they entire night… there were no lights, but water etc and being September, the hotel was very warm. She sure was committee here. The property was clean and modern, the bed comfortable. An opening window would have been nice, especially with their AC being down but seems standard in newer hotels not to have an opening window. While the power outage was a tough night for guests and staff, their team did an exceptional job dealing with the circumstances. I will be back next time I’m in this area to this property again!

Without doubt one of the favorite hotels I stayed! Upon arrival we were warmly welcomed by the staff and general manager Trevor.. The staff was extremely friendly, the breakfast was amazing, which obviously also added up to the experience. Note, this is not a 4/5-star hotel or so, but the atmosphere is so special. All respect for the general manager who does a great job here; a true sample of excellent hospitality!
