I’m still feeling unsettled as I write this review, two hours after leaving the Waddell Hotel after a one night stay. The hotel has a nice hallway and well appointed rooms.Everything we needed was there, but the lack of hospitality made our stay far less than comfortable. A sign at what was apparently the original entrance to the hotel said to go to the front of the building. But the only other door we saw that was open was to a restaurant with a different name. Looking through the windows we could see dining guests in a bar and dining room, but no hotel reception, so we kept looking, and got an only partially-obscured view of what seemed to be a messy back room. Eventually we gave up, and one of us entered the dining room to ask for advice on where to find the hotel reception. The dining room was not busy at that time. The first woman I spoke with remarked, “Oh, we hear that often,” when I told her that we’d been puzzled as to how to find the hotel reception. She called someone else over, and left, so I told that person, who said she would check us in, about our puzzlement and suggested that their sign should say to check in at the restaurant. She told me no one else seemed to have our problem. She handed us our keys (no explanation why there were two). We enjoyed a nice dinner, with good service, at the restaurant. We never saw anyone else in the hotel. We passed no other guests, we saw no other people. We left our keys in a drop off box in the hallway and left in the morning. Apparently at one time the hotel provided breakfast, but there was no sign of that, or any notes with suggestions apparent. It was just an odd experience.…
I booked here for 2 nights based on the location and unique character of the hotel. My biggest complaint was the noise from an exhaust fan that was coming in through the window where the air conditioner was vented. It was very loud and right beside the bed. I would have liked to hear the Ganaraska river instead, but it was drowned out by this unpleasant noise. I MacGyvered a solution for the 2nd night blocking the gaps in the window with a blanket and pillows :) Also please fix the carpet seam at the bathroom door in 305 - there are some sharp edges where it has pulled away. My rating is bumped up by the quality of the restaurant downstairs which was the highlight of my stay, with dinner delivered to my room one night and enjoyed on the lovely patio the 2nd night.
Stayed in the Waddell one night as part of an Ontario road trip. Was impressed by the room; extremely spacious, bed was super comfortable, loved the decor. Bathroom shower was great, lots of good pressure and hot water. Generous supply of toiletries and towels. Had a wonderful meal in the adjoining restaurant. Employees were all extremely helpful and polite. Would highly recommend this very lovely hotel - great value for the price paid. Well located on the water at the end of the Main Street.
The building is gorgeous. We stayed in the Terrace Room on the third floor. It us very large with a balcony overlooking the Ganaraska river. The fireplace will bring us back in the winter. The staff are friendly and helpful. We enjoyed dinner on the patio and drinks at the bar. A wonderful way to spend our anniversary.
This hotel was lovely, the rooms were nicely decorated and it had a wonderful onsite restaurant called Gusto Trattoria with amazing food! Walking distance to a pretty street full of quaint stores and restaurants. The only downfall was being on the street side view was noisy with loud cars/motorcycles going by at night, however that may not be an issue when the window air conditioning unit is not in place. We would definitely stay here again.
We splurged to stay here, having walked by before and admired it. Our impression of our room is that it needs a refresh. The door sticks, the carpet needs replacing, there is a picture missing on the wall and the lampshade is kind of beaten up—that kind of stuff. It did. It did not seem quite nice enough for what we paid. But the bones are good! Nice big windows which open and spacious. It was clean, the room is a good size and the bathtub was nice and deep. There is a portable Air conditioner in the room which kept us cool and also made white noise to cover street sounds outside. The person who checked us in was nice. It is close to the beach. We didn’t try the restaurant, but it looks like the prettiest and fanciest part of the hotel. Maybe eat there.
We stayed one night at The Waddell based on Trip Advisor reviews. We booked the Terrace Room and were glad we did. It is on the third floor ( there are elevators ) and has a large balcony overlooking the river. The room is large, bright and has a very modern bathroom with a rain forest shower. A fridge and microwave are in the room. There is a large screen TV and in room wifi connection. It has a large comfortable king size bed. One recommendation would be a blind on the window to the balcony as it gets bright in the room early in the morning at this time of year. There is some noise from traffic outside but not a major problem. Parking on site is limited but is available at no charge across from the hotel and a short walk back to the hotel. Check in is through the onsite restaurant and checkout consists of leaving the room key in a box next to the elevator. We ate at the onsite Italian restaurant Trattoria Gusto and it was one of the best Italian meals we had had in awhile. Outside patio sitting next to the river is also available The hotel is situated within a short walk of downtown where there are a variety of shops and eating establishments. Walking trails pass by the hotel along the river. Port Hope has a lot of history plus interesting architecture all within walking distance of the hotel. We would definitely stay at The Waddell again.…
A true oasis of luxury in the heart of historic Port Hope. Stayed 2 nights in the beautiful Terrace Room - sooooo lovely! The long balcony was a beautiful spot in the sunshine and we watched the salmon run in the Ganaraska River below! Very spacious suite with a cosy fireplace, separate work, seating and kitchenette areas. Excellent and friendly service. Dinner was delivered to our room both nights and it was outstanding! The funghi risotto is incredible and don't miss out on the truffle frites or the tiramisu... Great selection of wines too! We will be back and we will definitely recommend The Waddell to friends and family.
Port Hope is beautiful with a great main street. We went for a late lunch and really wasn't expecting much. This place has the look, feel and service of a 5 star restaurant in NYC. We had the special soup which was pea with feta, pistachio, and some other cheese. I really wasn't expecting to be blown away but this reminded me of when I had the beet soup at the Gramercy hotel in New York. Expecting an ok soup and I still remember it many years later. The Waddell brought me back. We shared the main grilled cheese sandwich...don't let that seem small town..it was delicious with tomatoes, and all the high end pieces. Just devoured it. Soooo good. Oh and the truffle fries? Yum. Who is this chef as he/she should be on the cover of chef weekly. An all around delicious lunch and memorable experience. Thank you Waddell. We will be back.…
We live in the area, but had just moved out of our house. We choose the Waddell and were not disappointed. The rooms are large and beautiful. The hotel has all of it's original charm and beauty - but with wonderful enhancements.. The fireplace was cozy. Sitting outside and listening to the water from the river rapids...was soothing. The staff even brought our dinner up to the room from the restaurant below.
