Detailed Reviews
I have stayed at the Waddell a few times the past few years; most recent stay was disappointing: while the room was charming, it felt like its historical charm was being prioritized over guest comfort. Eg, the bathroom fixtures need to be updated including a sink that drains and a shower knob that doesn’t look mouldy inside; the mattress and bed need replacing, and the carpet either cleaned or replaced. While I do appreciate the historical charm of this hotel, I can no longer recommend it as a place to stay comfortably; instead the hotel rooms promote sensory discomfort. Too bad.

We stayed one night at The Waddell based on Trip Advisor reviews. We booked the Terrace Room and were glad we did. It is on the third floor ( there are elevators ) and has a large balcony overlooking the river. The room is large, bright and has a very modern bathroom with a rain forest shower. A fridge and microwave are in the room.
There is a large screen TV and in room wifi connection. It has a large comfortable king size bed. One recommendation would be a blind on the window to the balcony as it gets bright in the room early in the morning at this time of year. There is some noise from traffic outside but not a major problem. Parking on site is limited but is available at no charge across from the hotel and a short walk back to the hotel.
Check in is through the onsite restaurant and checkout consists of leaving the room key in a box next to the elevator. We ate at the onsite Italian restaurant
Trattoria Gusto and it was one of the best Italian meals we had had in awhile. Outside patio sitting next to the river is also available
The hotel is situated within a short walk of downtown where there are a variety of shops and eating establishments. Walking trails pass by the hotel along the river.
Port Hope has a lot of history plus interesting architecture all within walking distance of the hotel. We would definitely stay at The Waddell again.

We stayed at The Waddell on a Saturday at the beginning of October. We stayed in the 2 Queen bed room on the second floor facing the front of the building.
The room was gorgeous. Furnishings were so lovely and the beds were very comfortable. The room was spotless. Bathroom was up to date and had everything you could want.
The Waddell is very convenient to everything in Port Hope. We walked to a cafe for lunch and also walked to the Capital Theatre for a Abbamania show that evening.
We did not eat in the restaurant in the building because we had made other plans but during a second stay, we would go there. The aroma of the food and the vibe was great. They were very busy.
There is parking at the side of the building and also across the street at public parking which is free. There was construction going on on the street which I believe should be completed soon. It will be great when that is finished.
You check in at the restaurant host desk inside the restaurant.

My Mom and I stayed at the Waddell as part of a "girls getaway" in honour of her birthday. We stayed in a second floor Terrace room and loved the view over the river. The room was very clean, and despite these strange times, we felt very comfortable in the hotel. Mask protocols are in place and clearly communicated, hand sanitizer was available in high touch areas and one-way entry and exit minimize cross contamination.
We brought a bottle of wine to enjoy on the Terrace and the wait staff in the bar graciously set us up with wine glasses and an ice bucket. We dined in the hotel's Trattoria Gusto and enjoyed both our meal and service... from hostess to wait staff.
We took advantage of the coupon to Queenies bakeshop across the street and enjoyed amazing (still warm) croissants with coffee from our in-room Keurig, while enjoying the view over the river. Only wish we could have opened the windows to enjoy the sound of the water as we fell asleep.
While we were only an hour outside Toronto we felt much further away and it was a welcome reprieve - nice to feel like we were really on vacation. Managed some retail therapy on main street and even went for a run along the Waterfront Trail.
Great escape!

The rooms are clean, but definitely showing their age, carpet buckling and separating at the seams
When making a reservation, it should be noted that there is NO staff onsite after 10pm or before 10am.
The rooms above the restaurant seem to be an afterthought, with checking in being done by the staff/servers in the restaurant

We were in rm201 - lovely, large room with door that exits to outdoor terrace. High ceilings, large windows, big tv, a great little room off to side of main room with its own sink, counter & mini fridge. Bed comfortable, towels fluffy. Bathroom was completly different style - could use a restyle, but still clean. Had some issues initially with tv but staff came up to help us sort it out. Too bad the fabulously large windows weren't clean to show off how lovely they are & with an ok view. We were given 2 keys that look the same & I always seemed to choose the wrong one to open the door - wish they had an identifying band on one.
Restaurant was great - we went there 3-4 times. No free breakfast though. The restaurant only opens for lunch & dinner. Ganaraska River was beseiged with the salmon migration up the river - absolutely amazing event. Phenomenol actually. Major road construction on Walton, while much needed was a drag to put up with as tourists in for only a few days. Too bad The Capitol was closed - but that will be a next time for us, once road construction finished. Easy town to make one's was around. I would certainly stay here again.

I returned to The Waddell in June of 2022, five years after my first visit with my late wife in April of 2017. It was on that occasion I proposed to her across the street after dinner, in the gazebo overlooking the river. I returned this time to remember that night, on my own, as I felt it was time. The staff was exceptional, the room was far superior to what I expected, having a view of both the street and the river, and was very well appointed. Parking is tight but I didn't have a problem getting a spot, and the hotel is close by everything you could possibly want to do while in Port Hope. The only little detail in the room I noted needed attention was a small section of peeling paint in the washroom, but other than that it was great. Fabulous stay and I will return again!

I love staying at The Waddell. The staff put you first, and as a woman travelling alone, I never feel uncomfortable there. The beds are wonderfully comfortable. The historic feel of the place is very relaxing. If you're lucky to be Riverside, the view of the Ganaraska River is lovely. The restaurant attached, Trattoria Gusto, is excellent. Cool shops are within walking distance and it's an easy drive from the east side of Toronto for a quiet overnight getaway. Highly recommended!!

We really enjoyed the Waddell, the room was perfect and the view looking over the river was lovely. We ate dinner at the restaurant on the patio. They had very efficient heaters overhead to off-set the cool 15c degree weather, very comfortable, excellent service and exquisite cuisine! The night away from home was very affordable, a nice surprise these days! Port Hope has retained its historic architecture and The Waddell is a prime example of that.

We stayed at the charming Waddell Vintage Hotel in the center of town on the Gananaska River on a Wednesday night after seeing a wonderful play at the Capital Theatre.
.We had a balcony overlooking the river above the restaurant ( # 201)with a patio table and four chairs and enjoyed the sunshine and shared a bottle of wine with our friends before dinner.
Patio dinner was lovely, that our hostess managed to get us seated on after having only indoor reservations.Very appreciative of that.
We all had pastas and wine at Trattoria Gusto which was excellent.
The room was lovely and spacious with a comfortable king size bed.
The service from our waitress Jacqie was warm, lightheartedly friendly and very efficient.
We would highly recommend Waddell Hotel and also the Capitol Theatre and the pleasant town of Port Hope.
