My Mom and I stayed at the Waddell as part of a "girls getaway" in honour of her birthday. We stayed in a second floor Terrace room and loved the view over the river. The room was very clean, and despite these strange times, we felt very comfortable in the hotel. Mask protocols are in place and clearly communicated, hand sanitizer was available in high touch areas and one-way entry and exit minimize cross contamination.

We brought a bottle of wine to enjoy on the Terrace and the wait staff in the bar graciously set us up with wine glasses and an ice bucket. We dined in the hotel's Trattoria Gusto and enjoyed both our meal and service... from hostess to wait staff.

We took advantage of the coupon to Queenies bakeshop across the street and enjoyed amazing (still warm) croissants with coffee from our in-room Keurig, while enjoying the view over the river. Only wish we could have opened the windows to enjoy the sound of the water as we fell asleep.

While we were only an hour outside Toronto we felt much further away and it was a welcome reprieve - nice to feel like we were really on vacation. Managed some retail therapy on main street and even went for a run along the Waterfront Trail.

Great escape!

We stayed one night at The Waddell based on Trip Advisor reviews. We booked the Terrace Room and were glad we did. It is on the third floor ( there are elevators ) and has a large balcony overlooking the river. The room is large, bright and has a very modern bathroom with a rain forest shower. A fridge and microwave are in the room.
There is a large screen TV and in room wifi connection. It has a large comfortable king size bed. One recommendation would be a blind on the window to the balcony as it gets bright in the room early in the morning at this time of year. There is some noise from traffic outside but not a major problem. Parking on site is limited but is available at no charge across from the hotel and a short walk back to the hotel.
Check in is through the onsite restaurant and checkout consists of leaving the room key in a box next to the elevator. We ate at the onsite Italian restaurant
Trattoria Gusto and it was one of the best Italian meals we had had in awhile. Outside patio sitting next to the river is also available
The hotel is situated within a short walk of downtown where there are a variety of shops and eating establishments. Walking trails pass by the hotel along the river.
Port Hope has a lot of history plus interesting architecture all within walking distance of the hotel. We would definitely stay at The Waddell again.

Very nice boutique hotel in a prime port hope location. We stayed in the large terrace room overlooking the ganaraska river. The room itself was lovely, and very clean. There were a few small details, however, that would have earned this an extra star: (1) breakfast voucher was given for Queenies bake shop which, to our early morning disappointment did not serve breakfast (only coffee and baked goods) a couple of other similarly priced restaurants are nearby, so we were surprised the hotel chose to pair with this one; (2) nobody answers the phone.. we had a question about parking when we arrived, and couldn't reach anyone at the hotel phone number.. it went right to a voicemail box that was full; (3) there is no parking, we were told to park in the municipal lot across the street, and because it is a weekend, we "shouldn't be charged". Fortunately this advice was accurate; (4) the outdoor terrace in our room was gorgeous, but we didnt feel comfortable using it because of the many spiders living on the chairs. While it's an outdoor space and critters are to be expected, I'm sure theres something they can do to avoid this problem for guests (e.g. spraying/cleaning the chairs)

I booked here for 2 nights based on the location and unique character of the hotel. My biggest complaint was the noise from an exhaust fan that was coming in through the window where the air conditioner was vented. It was very loud and right beside the bed. I would have liked to hear the Ganaraska river instead, but it was drowned out by this unpleasant noise. I MacGyvered a solution for the 2nd night blocking the gaps in the window with a blanket and pillows :) Also please fix the carpet seam at the bathroom door in 305 - there are some sharp edges where it has pulled away. My rating is bumped up by the quality of the restaurant downstairs which was the highlight of my stay, with dinner delivered to my room one night and enjoyed on the lovely patio the 2nd night.

We splurged to stay here, having walked by before and admired it. Our impression of our room is that it needs a refresh. The door sticks, the carpet needs replacing, there is a picture missing on the wall and the lampshade is kind of beaten up—that kind of stuff. It did. It did not seem quite nice enough for what we paid.

But the bones are good! Nice big windows which open and spacious.

It was clean, the room is a good size and the bathtub was nice and deep. There is a portable
Air conditioner in the room which kept us cool and also made white noise to cover street sounds outside.

The person who checked us in was nice. It is close to the beach.

We didn’t try the restaurant, but it looks like the prettiest and fanciest part of the hotel. Maybe eat there.

Do you really expect people to stay in a room where the temperature was 37C/98F?They do! Do you expect to stay in a room where the stand alone a/c was so loud you can’t sleep? They do! The sag in the mattress was extremely obvious. Needless to say we both didn’t sleep. But the view is great.......Virtually no parking but you can take your chances on public/private property. No hotel staff in the building from 10:00 pm to 10:00 am. All the complaints from 2 and 3 years ago still apply so no regard for constructive criticism. Their hornet problem is so bad I got stung in our bathroom. Fun to watch fisherman from the room. Cute little fridge. Bathroom is spacious. Lots of little shops close by but closed due to covid. Overpriced. Fortunately, they refunded our second night. Extremely disappointed.

We had a great experience eating and staying at this beautiful boutique hotel, situated right on the Ganaraska river and if the service and stay wasn't enough, we managed to stay when the salmon were swimming upstream which neither one of us had experienced before. We enjoyed dinner on the patio at their restaurant Trattoria Gusto which overlooks the river. Not a big menu but lots of great choices. The four of us had a delicious artichoke appetizer. I had the shrimp risotto which was cheesy and yummy and although big didn't have a lot of shrimp. My husband had a pasta dish (can't remember the name), but he said he really enjoyed it. The service was great and the food was hot and delicious. No heaters yet, but sounds like they are getting some so in the meantime, take a sweater - it was cold once the sun went in. We picked the Terrace room on the 3rd floor to stay in and it was lovely. Very big and spacious with a terrace that overlooks the river. Big comfy king size bed and a very pretty bathroom with a large walk-in shower. Everything was great except we couldn't get the fireplace to work. That was the only glitch - we'd happily go back again.

I returned to The Waddell in June of 2022, five years after my first visit with my late wife in April of 2017. It was on that occasion I proposed to her across the street after dinner, in the gazebo overlooking the river. I returned this time to remember that night, on my own, as I felt it was time. The staff was exceptional, the room was far superior to what I expected, having a view of both the street and the river, and was very well appointed. Parking is tight but I didn't have a problem getting a spot, and the hotel is close by everything you could possibly want to do while in Port Hope. The only little detail in the room I noted needed attention was a small section of peeling paint in the washroom, but other than that it was great. Fabulous stay and I will return again!

This boutique hotel is centrally located in Port Hope along the Ganaraska River. Excellent fishing just steps away from the hotel. Our room was very large and spotlessly clean and had a beautiful baclony overlooking the river. There is an excellent restaurant downstairs of the hotel. Everyone is extremely friendly and helpful. Highly recommend this location.

After a busy day moving my mother, we had hoped for a better rest then we got. Mysteriously, a framed picture falling off the wall in the middle of the night, dirty coffee cups, a non-functioning hair dryer and not even a piece of paper to be found except an envelope for tips to write out our concerns, The Waddell is rich in history and architecturally beautiful, but it is tired inside and there are things that need to be updated for it to compete with others who offer more amenities within the room.
Our immediate concerns were looked after but after a promise of a reimbursement, it took two and a half weeks for the manager to sort that. Disappointing experience.
