We stayed 3 days, used as a base to explore Manitoulin. Greeted with cold water bottles by friendly manager. Room was clean and a good size. Comfortable bed, small table and chairs to eat, free internet, super shower. Manager offered coffee and breakfast, homemade muffins, very nice and certainly above and beyond! There is a coffee maker, microwave, fridge in room, which we loved for the longer stay. Especially since most restaurants close by 7:30, something Smiley let us know up front, so we could organize our meals!
I have traveled and stayed in motels all over North America and 19 times in the tropics and I give this place 5 stars for cleanliness and comfort. The cold air drifting off lake Huron was like staying in a mountain cabin in the Rockies so the killer heat wave was not an issue. The restaurant 1 minute away is the best food you will ever eat for cheap. Our last place on the island closed so this is voted as our forever home. The kids can swim or boat 2 minutes away.
The rooms are very clean and cozy. The owners, Lorraine and Smiley, are truly passionate about doing all they can to ensure their gusts feel welcomed. Lorraine helped maximize our experience while on the island by sharing little tips what to visit along the way. Smile offered tasty food on both days that we enjoyed.
greeted with cold water bottle by the owner. little "mom and dad" type place, and myself and a buddy stayed there in June 2017 on our way south. we will stay again in a heartbeat. we are northerners and appreciate the down home hospitality and friendliness we had here as well as the clean room. we wanted rest and relaxation, in clean and comfortable room, and we got it. not a fancy exterior, but who cares? for those that need wifi in their room, this does not have it, however, for a tired traveler looking for a northener smile and clean comfort, this is it, Gerry
Our overnight stay at the Buckhorn Motel far exceeded my expectations. The room itself was fine, clean well-priced and very convenient for our morning ferry-ride. It was Lorraine and Smiley that would make me come back. Upon arrival, which was late, Lorraine was waiting for us and made us feel welcome and comfortable. In the morning, when trying to get my kids up and out the door and trying to figure out where and how to get food into them, Smiley fed us all, topped up our coffee and sat down with us for a chat. Most amazingly, in our haste, we left a fair bit of cash in the room. Lorraine got in touch with us immediately and Smiley had it sent by registered mail that afternoon. Honest, amazing, and much appreciated.
I checked in late in the evening as it had been pouring rain all day and it took me longer than expected to get to the motel. Upon arrival, Smiley, our host, made me feel right at home. He offered me a delicious homecooked meal because all the restaurants nearby were closed by this time and let me help myself to his large movie collection because there was no cable in the room. Although basic, the motel room was perfectly comfortable and clean - and had a very homey and welcoming feel to it! I would definitely recommend spending the night there
2 minutes from ferry - a perfect location after a day spent in Tobermory, getting home after last ferry. Nothing fancy but a clean place to rest your head. Hot showers, nice owner. Cold water bottles when you arrive, movies to watch because there is no cable, and a quick breakfast as we headed out on our journey in the morning.
A complete dump. Find somewhere else to stay. Small rooms with no air conditioning. We requested a pull out or a cot and were given a piece of foam with a sheet on it. The guy dragged the foam "mattress" on the ground from storage with the sheet on it.
Smiley & Lorraine were very friendly hosts going out of their way to make us comfortable. Room very adequate and spotless! Is located to far from town to walk at night. Wifi in the sitting area at the office.
This place was recommended to us at the visitor center in Sault St. Marie. I can not believe anyone would recommend it. To say something nice, the room did look clean. The property is unkept, Windows are closed but feel like they are open. Smells of granny closet, musty/moldy. No WiFi, no tv channels at all. The man that I assume was the owner was very rude, said it wasn't the Ritz, if i didnt like it leave. We did!
