Detailed Reviews
There were four of us that stayed there last July. We were travelling on motorcycles so we didnt have any towels or anything. They were very accomodating and friendly people. Cabins are plain and clean. We are going back again this July. Cant wait!

If you are looking for a relaxing place to get away from the everyday, this is the place to go...
Quiet and relaxing, friendly people and the owners and their extended family here are the Best hosts you could ask for.
We would DEFINITELY RECOMMEND South Bay Resort to our families and friends or anyone who asked where to stay on Manitoulin Island.

Very friendly, helpful staff and accommodating on short notice. We had a beautiful view of the lake- perfect for the sunrise. Bathrooms and showers were in good condition. We will definitely be back in the future!!

It was my first time visitng Manitoulin Island from Tobermory traveling by car with a dog. Now I know the island, I would stay somewhere prettier and more populated such as Gore Bay or Little Current. (South Baymouth has no grocery stores in town.) Having said that, this location is very close to Ferry (but longer distance to anywhere else in the island) and not right in town, so it's quieter and more private. The owners are extreamly friendly and kind - they offered us food when they learned that we didn't have dinner when we arrived. When we told the owner the microwave in our cabin didn't work properly, they came and replaced it right away. The cabin we stayed was very clean and was right in front of the bay. The entire place felt a bit run-down, but overall, not a bad place to stay for the price you pay. I would recommand this place for anyone who wants to stay very close to the Ferry and enjoy cabin style living/camping.

Stayed here last summer at the start of our vacation and big disappointment.
Ensure they don't book you in the cabin across from their office and beside their living quarters as this will be your true Canadian northern experience!
If you are over 6o you will have to manoeuvre up to the cabin and back done on rickety steps; if you have anything larger than a compact vehicle you will have to back out everytime you want to open the door and, as an added bonus you can listen to staff loudly enjoying 'themselves' with wafts of pot floating thru the cabin into the early morning hours...
If you're from the City and this is what your idea of a Northern getaway is then, this is your spot!
Staff could take a lesson or two from the Wild goose staff in Geraldton, now, there's a class act and true northern experience.
Owners must have campaigned hard to get the positive reviews they have because this is in no way above a two star'resort'.

Dear 2wanderbeyond, this concerns us greatly. It concerns us that you have already left us a review last year and that again you are the only person ever to have rated us so low. It is also very worrisome that this continues to fester within you. We wish you peace in your future travels and endeavors. I will reply again to your above comments. First off, we do realize that the cabin closer to the lodge is less private for all. We have designed a small fenced in yard and we fully disclose this information in our cabin description. Seems obvious that it does not matter what age you are, there are indeed steps that are required to enter the cabin. 5 steps precisely, all of which are solid. I guess when you book a cabin built in 1960's as part of an original northern fishing lodge, an elevator isn't an option. The actual parking located directly to the right hand side of the cabin is fit for 2 Hemi trucks side by side. Again, you are right that you can't just drive through and must either back in or back out but otherwise, it is forest so destroying forest so that drivers don't have to use their reverse seems legit. To open your door, please do not park so close to the cabin. As for enjoying ourselves, we bend over backwards on any given day to ensure everyone has a great time. We stay up so we can ensure security to the grounds and as a bonus we also get to have a campfire, play guitar and roast marshmallows. This is a family owned and operated campground, there is no illegal activity here. I do suggest that you continue to return to the spots you love and let the people who love this place ( and trust me when we say there are many and none of them required campaigning) return to us and then all can experience their own great Northern Experience.

+1
.. but never left this one. It was just too nice and the staff were great, they welcomed us in like friends and helped us with our enquiries, they even lent us some camping essentials. Overall this is a peaceful well catered for resort providing great fishing and it is close to the ferry line (~1 mile).
We would really love to go back to South bay resort.

I have to confess we ended up not staying here, since my wife felt uneasy about the small structures when where was a severe thunderstorm warning in the area (I felt okay about it), but wanted to give high marks for the management's attitude. I made the reservation by phone that morning and they did not ask for a credit card #. When we arrived, amidst the aforementioned warning, and expressed our uneasiness, they said, by all means, go look at other places in the nearby town, and they would hold our reserved cabin for an hour. We did decide to stay elsewhere but returned as a courtesy to let the manageers know, and they were very understanding.
The structures are, as mentioned, small and basic, but not flimsy, and the prices are less than other places we found in the area. There are cabins, cottages and camping/trailer spots. The few of the bay is the best I saw. I don't know if it's within walking distance of the small town's restaurants, etc., but it's still pretty close.

We stayed here for 1 night during a visit to Manitoulin Island and we were very happy with our cabin. The prices are very reasonable and the owners (new management last month) are very helpful and accommodating. The cabins and decor may be a bit rustic but it was very clean. Great place to kayak too since they are sheltered in an inlet.

We rented cabin number 6. It was well suited for a family of 4 (2 adults and 2 children). The cabin was tight, but it was really clean, the showers had hot water and no issues with the water pressure at all. They provided the linens and all necessities and utensils in the cabin. Staff was helpful and reachable when we needed. Playground was perfect for the kids. Water level was high this year but still amazingly fun. We will definitely be going back!

We rented cabins 2 and 3 for our trip with 4 kids (ages 8,11,12 and 11 months) and us and grandparents. The resort/campground is just minutes from the ferry dock (you can hear the chi cheemaun horn every time!). The cabins are older and rustic but included pretty much everything we needed, including towels and bedding. It’s reasonably priced comparable to a motel, but much much better! The cabins are lakefront and we were able to sit in the screened in porch to relax and watch the kids swim. The shower has awesome pressure and stayed hot. This was quite a luxury for “camping”. The area was quiet and safe for our kids to run around and go to the camp store on their own. The only downside I found was that the rentals of paddle boards, paddle boats, canoes and kayaks was a little pricey $10-20 per hour per vessel. Adds up quick with 3 kids who want to try it all. The owners were very friendly and checkin and check out was quick. We all had a very nice time, even though it rained most of Saturday. We ventured out in the rain to Bridal Veil falls about 45 mins away. We look forward to another visit back next summer and maybe even this fall.

We are so pleased to hear you enjoyed your stay. We understand that some people may want to rent boats for several hours and we have organized «package deals » in the past depending on availability and demand. Be sure to inquire upon your return.
