How blessed were we? We had the bed - a quaint and comfortable room with private bath. We had the breakfast - something different every morning - delicious and healthy - in such an ambient little cottage with our fellow guests. We had our hosts Brenda and her son Noj who both made us feel so welcome and made it all magically happen. And then there was the Gallery with beautiful works of art done by local Manitoulin artists.

Could not have been better.

Excellent B & B. The hostess, Brenda Renwick, was welcoming and helpful. She has a good knowledge of the island ferry as well as the local attractions. The room with ensuite bath was nicely decorated and very very clean. There were options for breakfast ensuring something for everyone's taste. We were able to get our feezer packs frozen overnight.

Brenda and her staff couldn't have been more helpful or accommodating to my husband and I on our one night in Manitoulin Island. What a special place this is. I had stayed here with a friend 10 years ago and loved it then. Our stay at Southbay Guesthouse was perfect - thanks Brenda!

On the evening of Tuesday August 5th, 2003, our family stayed in the teepee accommodation at this establishment on Manitoulin Island. We have several complaints. Firstly, the literature advertises this accommodation at $35 per evening. This fee was confirmed over the phone a month and a half prior to our stay, when we reserved our accommodation and informed them that we would have our three small children with us. It was only after unloading our luggage and settling in that we were informed that they charged $35 per couple and that our stay would cost in excess of $70. (After some haggling , the hostess agreed to lower the price to $60.) We also read in their literature of a discount on our ferry passing, but they failed to return our phone calls regarding this offer and so we paid the full fare.$60 per night for our family to sleep on airmattresses (one our own, as there was only a lounge chair cushion on which our third child was expected to sleep) in a hole ridden teepee with no towels or bed linens. $60 per night for the use of one very small bathroom with no lock on the door, and garbage piled just outside it. $60 per night for a stay at an establishment with grounds that were unkept and where the greatest attraction was a child-sized pool filled with swampy water and several bull frogs.Forgive our frustration but we enjoyed the facilities at a Provincial camp ground several days prior to our stay at the Southbay Guesthouse at the cost of $20 per evening. (no additional charge for our children.) Upon leaving the establishment, we stayed at the Howard Johnston Hotel in Sudbury for $99 per night. For forty dollars more, we enjoyed a private bath, coffee maker, television, indoor pool, sauna, weight room, two double beds and a cot with bed linens and towels and our children ate free at the attached restaurant.Needless to say, we chose hotel over bed and breakfast accommodation in Sudbury in part because of the misleading advertising and poor reception we received at the Southbay Guest House on Manitoulin Island.Be assured that we have forwarded this information to our friends who enjoy traveling in and around Ontario. We can only hope that they will improve their advertising and the overall quality of their establishment.Sincerely, Rev. Mavis Currie. Mr. Tom Currie, C.G.A.

Booked this place in advance and was really looking forward to it after a very long drive through northern ontario. Arrived around six only to be met by a less than helpful proprieter that claimed that she had mixed up the reservation date. Don't see how because she was very clear in the call ahead that the room was ours. We were only in South Baymouth to catch the morning ferry and there were not many choices for alternate accomodation. Luckily we found a decent room at the Wigwam motel. These ladies were awesome and even gave us the room at a discount. I can't comment on the condition of the rooms at the Southbay because I never got a chance to see them; but the outside was not at all as it seemed on the internet. They claim to be the closest to the ferry but the two other area motels are closer , nicer and cheaper with much more accomodating staff.

My Wife and i stayed two nights in their motel units.
The unit was very clean, quiet and great linen and towels.
When we had our breakfast the next morning, to our surprise we had 3 cerals to choose from, coffee, tea, fruit salad, many kinds of nuts, fruits, breads and i could go on.
My wife and i have travel to expensive resorts ($200 per person) and not had the quality that we received there at Southbay Guesthouse.
Come see for your self.

My husband and I spent two nights at Southbay Guesthouse last week. My husband was returning to his childhood home for what he thought was a final visit. This will not be a final visit if he is spared and well. What can we say? So much to recommend with regards to this B & B! The accommodation was delightful, so quiet and comfortable, also suited us as seniors to a 'T'. From the outset, Brenda made us feel like we had truly come "home". She is a gracious hostess. Diane served breakfast on our first morning ... thank you, Diane, it was our pleasure to make your acquaintance. Everything in the breakfast room was ready, in order and appetizing. We ate with our eyes first of all. The fruit salad was delicious and served so attractively. It was a leisurely breakfast and also most enjoyable visiting with other guests. In summary, a memorable stay. Thank you.

We usually blast through South Baymouth after getting off the ferry. Instead, this year we took the last one and stayed on Manitoulin, avoiding all the ferry traffic and really lucking out on a terrific spot.
A lovely room (#3?), with a wonderful whirlpool bath – just the thing after a long day of traveling! The room also has a multitude of nice decorative touches, as does the whole venue. In fact, the attached Gallery also has fantastic crafts – I was able to buy several presents for folks back home near the beginning of the trip, and relax about them for the rest. Good breakfast, too, with a great fruit salad and yummy local jams (among other things). Not to mention the warm and thoughtful but not cloying hospitality. We’ll be back, maybe even on the return trip!

We stayed here on our first night on Manitoulin Island and was so impressed with Brenda and her team that we booked our last night on the Island with her as well. Carol loved the gift shop and we both loved both rooms that we stayed in. Brenda is an amazing host and makes you feel right at home. We would highly recommend this B+B to anyone.

On a busy summer weekend, we were afraid that we wouldn't find anything at all, and would just have to drive further into the island. They did indeed have a room for us on a Friday night, and it was nice staying in the quaint little town. The owner is very friendly and accommodating. Her gallery is beautiful, and full of nice arts and crafts. Her recommendation for dinner at a small restaurant further inland was terrific.

On the minus side: the switch for the bathroom light is in an adjacent suite. It could easily be moved to the other side of the wall.

There is a step into the hot tub which is a real trip hazard when entering the bathroom from the bedroom at night. The first stubbed toe, is on them. The second one, which drew blood is on me, but it still hurt like hell.

The plastic or rubber sheet on the bed was a real annoyance as it squeaked every time you moved.

All in all, I'd go back. Just trying to be honest and objective.
