Welcome to Spruceholme Inn! Proudly under the new ownership of Jane Toller (Pitfield), great-granddaughter of the original owner of Spruceholme - George Bryson Jr.Once you have been greeted by your hosts, you will be treated to a walk through history, through the time of the great lumber barons and of the opening of the Ottawa River Valley. The rich heritage, the luxury and the stories all come to life as you meander through a mansion that has been meticulously restored to its original splendour. When you enter Spruceholme you are immediately transported to another time and place. In every room you will find pieces of the past, and of George Bryson's legacy. Look for his roll top desk and an autographed photo of Sir Wilfrid Laurier, a frequent visitor to his fellow statesman's home in Pontiac back in Fort-Coulonge's heyday. No matter which room you choose to stay in, you will find Bryson family heirlooms, exquisite comfort and peace. We invite you to share this living museum with us, any time of year.

I have mixed feelings about my recent 2 night stay at Spruceholm. I had chosen Fort Coulonge somewhat at random, looking fort a quiet place with relatively few tourists during the covid summer. The area itself is to be recommended on that front: it is quiet, scenic, and a good base from which to explore rural western Quebec and parts of Ontario. The hotel though...meh.... I guess I had envisoned some sort of luxury accomodations reading some of the more enthusiastic reviews on TA. We were housed in the annex (as were friends of ours who also visited a few weeks later). Perhaps the main house is better, but the annex is bare bones with a shared ktchen, tv room, a petty bare room to sleep in with not much going for it. No atmosphere, that's for sure. We were never met/greeted upon our arrival - our room key was just left by the front door of the main house - and it all felt very impersonal and unwelcoming. Our supper in the hotel restaurant was also basic. We had read about scrumptious sounding dishes in the reviews but the Saturday night we were there, in August, the menu was very limited and, while perhaps good by small town standards, far from what we had anticipated. Apparently more was on offer when our friends visited in September. The restaurant did have a great country music singer however (for the 2 tables with customers in the large restaurant) and that was fun and compensated for the very ordinary food. Wifi was very poor as was the (common room) tv reception. Breakfast the next morning was good in the well appointed dining room of the main house -beautiful surroundings and generous servings,

Didn’t quite know what to expect for a group of 21. Couldn’t have been any better. Rooms were perfect and the best part was the common room where we could all gather. appreciated the setup for our meals which were quite tasteful. Staff friendly & attentive. Definitely will be going back.

Excellent service, clean rooms, excellent friendly restaurant service and food!
We were a group of 16 peoples. We all Stayed at the Toller house and had all private rooms . The house is connected to an antique well conserved home. The house had a full kitchenette and living-room for ourselves. Restaurant was few steps witch was a beautiful rustic restaurant. Big portions and buffet breakfast.

Stayed there snowmobiling - was ok, restaurant above average!
But upon arrival no one at reception, trouble checking in, run to get someone all over the place - no one there..At check out same thing - can't check out..
I forgot my running shoes and called the following week, they said yes we have them, we'll send them..That's the last I heard. They were almost new, I followed up, no ones answers, left a message(no returns)...nothing..It's really disheartening!!
I would stay the heck away fro the place at all costs, (sleep in your car, you'll thank me honestly!!) I give up on these people, but will never forget!! No is my vote!

Beautiful venue for a wedding however the food was beyond bad. who serves one piece of sausage with a pineapple, grilled cheese sandwich, and mini burgers for an event, who would even offer such a terrible menu unless you were a hillbilly. The food does not compliment the venue at all. The service was non existent as we were not even offered a glass of water. they are desperately in need of a customer service course or a manager that knows about hospitatlity.

There is no other choice than staying here whenever I find myself in the area again. This B&B is steeped in history and family run for generations. The house is full of charm and class, just like it's owner!! It is fabulous to see and feel so many aspects of the past yet with the comforts of a modern times. With a bistro now connected, a hot tube, large yard and wonderfully spacious cozy suites, this place is a must stay. As a bonus, Jane grew up in this same house and can share so many wonderful stories. She is as precious as the home!

We stumbled upon this gem of a B&B with a quick web search, and found beautiful accommodations, in a quaint, peaceful village, where time literally seems to stand still. In our massive rooms, furnished with lovely vintage furniture, billowy sheer curtains, soothing decor, we were invited to make ourselves right at home. We found Jane, the owner, to be incredibly kind and generous, proudly sharing the history and legacy of this beautiful place which is imbedded in her family roots. We have already planned our return trip. Unbelievable value for the money! A true gem of a find. We explored the area, and enjoyed skiing at Mont Chilly, hiking around Chutes Coulonge, and skating on the river right across from the Inn. The whole experience was an unexpected surprise, and a wonderful weekend getaway!

The house itself was about the only nice thing about our stay. We were a large group of about 20 that stayed two nights, however not one person enjoyed it. House owner made everyone feel as if we were the largest inconvenience, and not welcome at ALL. Breakfast took about 2 hours to serve us all, and we were informed that the cook was 80 so to continue the wait, as we were going over her shift time and she was to be going home? Meals were limited and mediocre. The entire time I felt the staff was rude, and unwilling to be helpful in any way. Upon check out and paying I had voiced my concerns calmly with owner, not looking for any freebees, I was willing to pay for the stay. Owner had voiced how I have a "difficult personality to deal with." after that, I was just done. Very disappointed as most of my family lives in this town, I was really hoping this would be our go-to spot. Never again.

We were driving in the Pontiac on a Sunday afternoon and were looking for a good place to eat (i.e. a place that didn't serve chicken fingers and wings). We came across the Spruceholme Inn (Bryson's Bistro Du Bucheron) and had an unbelievable culinary experience. The food was excellent. My girlfriend ordered the salmon wellington and according to her it was the, "best meal I've ever had." Not only was the food excellent but we were also pleasantly surprised to be greeted by the owner, Jane Pitfield, a political celebrity of sorts who is breathing new life into the Ottawa Valley by opening the Inn and adjoining restaurant. I can't say enough good things about our experience! Highly recommended.

What a fantastic base from which to spend a long weekend, or in our case, more than a full week exploring the Pontiac region of Québec. The wonderful proprietors suggested many day trips and local places of interest. Having previously stayed at Spruceholme in the winter, the Pontiac in summer is a totally different experience – yet equally fantastic. From golf, to swimming in the Ottawa River, whitewater rafting, to a full-scale summer rodeo, this place offers an entirely reacquaint-yourself-with-nature kind of experience unavailable in the city. Spruceholme, itself, is like stepping back in time, but with all the modern conveniences (even free wifi !!) Be sure to explore the whole house, as we did, to truly experience Spruceholme Inn.
