Located between Baie St. Paul and Tadoussac, an hour and 30 minutes drive northeast of Quebec City, the inn is at the heart of the cultural and outdoor activities of the beautiful Charlevoix region. Located on a hillside, away from the road, surrounded by two and one half acres of land, this summer villa, filled with antiques, dates back to 1892. The original architecture and ambiance has been carefully preserved.

My sister and I stayed at Auberge La Chatelaine for 2 nights after a kayaking trip. July 2021. We like smaller places with character, rather than larger impersonal hotels We loved the home with its interesting character and antique furnishings. There was only one room available when we booked, so we got a room on the upper floor with a queen sized bed and a claw foot tube hidden behind a screen. There was a separate little closet with a toilet. One of the owners, Laurent, greeted us and showed us around on our arrival. He and his partner were originally from France. We loved the tables and chairs that were set up on the porch with a wonderful view towards the St. Lawrence, for breakfast We loved the charm of the place, but have a few suggestions of what could make it even better: • We both like to read before bed (especially with no television) and there were no reading lights beside the bed (there were some accent lamps, but nothing to light the sides of the bed for reading) • Breakfast was good, but very plain. We were surprised it was not better. There were no fresh fruit, vegetables, spices, sauces, or garnishes added to our plates of plain omelette (only salt or pepper) You could however select an apple or banana from the paper menu you had to fill out the night before. Coffee was served in tiny cups. There was no cream offered for coffee (only milk) We thought it might be nice to have hot coffee in thermoses for each table, or to have someone come around and offer more coffee as you ate breakfast. The orange juice tasted like it was made from concentrate, at first we thought it was Tang! In the reception area there were pamplets of activities to do in the area. We picked up one on the L’Isle-Aux –Couderes and did a day trip there. Laurent gave us suggestions on where to eat. On our first night we were surprised that everything was closed in La Malbaie by 8:30! On our second night we made reservations and had a great dinner. We definitely would recommend a visit to Auberge La Chatelaine if you like a place with charm and a lovely view. You feel like you are guests in someone’s older home.

We loved staying at Auberge La Chatelaine. Laurent and Quentin made us so welcome and recommended a lovely walk around the locality, as well as the best local restaurants. The house is gorgeous, a real country home, with quirky, sloping floors and tasteful furnishings. Every item at breakfast was homemade and delicious. We only wish we could’ve stayed longer.

We thoroughly enjoyed our overnight stop here with our teenage daughter. Laurent and Quentin were very friendly, and very helpful, especially when recommending places to eat in the evening. The property is spotless. The WiFi is excellent, essential if you have a teenager. The breakfast here was superb, especially the crepes!! Sitting outside on a Sunday morning eating breakfast and seeing the river, a very short distance away, was really lovely. I felt quite sad that we only spent one night here as part of our road trip!

We love Auberge La Châtelaine! We stayed for 7 nights during our most recent stay, having been on 3 occasions in total over the last 4 years. We have always gone in the winter and we absolutely love it. Arnaud & Odile, our hosts in previous years have moved back to France and in their place Laurent & Quentin are the new keepers! We adore Laurent & Quentin, they are excellent hosts, catered to us, and are available whenever a guest needs something. We would welcome them both in our own home. The rooms are delightful, each has a theme, we have stayed in Chambord & Fontainebleau, which can be viewed on their website. The latter is our most favorite, the rooms are always clean and well kept throughout our stay. The breakfasts we look forward to every day, everything is made in house by Quentin & Laurent, everything was delicious, whether it’s sweet or savory, you’ll find what you’re craving. On arrival they inquired if we had any dietary restrictions and were happy to acoomdate. We are especially big fans of the wood fireplace in the main room, after breakfast we typically had coffee in front of the fire, making it hard to leave most days :) We can’t say enough good things about this Inn, truly a beautiful place, with lots of history, great hosts, great ambiance. We will be back again!

La Chatelaine defines what an auberge should be: very welcoming owners who go the extra mile (kilometer...) to accommodate you, warm atmosphere, quaint genuine decor from the Golden Age, great breakfast. And the price is right!
