My husband and I came to Malbais Québec and stayed at the hostel for 6 nights. We loved the intertainement at the bar, the great view of the bay and tasty food. It was definitely fun, relaxing and a place we will return to this summer. I can’t wait to experience more of it!!!

Not English staff speakers. Good bar with many local beers. Not good pizza. Prices are not cheap. Rooms are upstairs. Not good value for money in low season. Single room is spacious. It is necessary to renovate furniture. It is clean.

We stayed just one night, to sleep there and go the national park. The room was really good and there was a pub/restaurant really nice downstairs, with great pizza, music and drinks. It's a youth environment, I would totally recommend it.

The good points: First of all, the hostel is located right in the centre of La Malbaie, and a 3min walk from the bus terminal, which is ideal. They also give a free map, with loads of indications and details, which was very useful. The check-in was smooth and friendly. The place was very clean (rare in youth hostels!) and the beds were very comfortable, they even have charging stations right near each bed. The wifi worked great in the whole hostel. The bar on the main floor is a great way to meet people and a friendly place, they have a good selection of beers, and they offer different shows in the evenings, including concerts, improv etc. Overall, not bad for the price! Nice atmosphere in this hostel. The bad points: The dorms and bathrooms are all mixed, which is a bit uncomfortable. The hostel also made a mistake with my reservation: I checked in and everything was fine, I was shown to my room, made the bed and settled in, and I came back around 11pm to find that they had given my bed to someone else, moved all my stuff on the floor, and thrown away my towel!! I had to move rooms at 11pm, trying to find someone in charge when the main reception was closed with no staff around... Not the best. The guy in charge of the bar helped me to settle into another dorm (not in a very friendly way FYI), although I had paid for a 4 bed dorm, not 6... When I mentioned it to the person in charge the next morning, they said it was a first, that it had never happened before, that they were sorry, however there was no offer to compensate me for giving me the wrong bed, making me move all my stuff at 11pm, and putting me into a 6 bed dorm instead of 4, which is what I had paid for. Therefore, mixed reviews on my part for my stay at the hostel.

Everybody knows that traveling around Charlevoix isn't cheap. And yet, staying at this nice hostel in the heart of La Malbaie will allow you to save a bundle! The hostel is located smack down in the downtown area of La Malbaie. Plenty of restaurants and two supermarkets are within walking distance. Everything else is a short drive away. You are only a block away from the St. Lawrence River and their terrace in the backyard overlooks it, which means that you are two minutes away from the bike path on which you can take long walks/rides following the waterfront. I've stayed for 6 nights in the 4-bed dorm and at 26$ a night (30$ if you don't have the HI card) it's definitely awesome value! The bigger dorms are more cramped, yet the 4-bed one on the left at the foot of the staircase is more spacious. Each bed comes with a big wooden locker in which there's room to store everything you want to keep safe. Each bed is also equipped with its own shelf, reading light, USB outlets, and power outlet, which is quite convenient. There is central A/C, but it's not always strong enough to cool down the rooms, especially if it's a hot day outside. Thankfully, the nights are usually cool in La Malbaie, so it was never an issue in my room. But I've heard other travelers complain about the bigger dorms being quite hot on certain nights. The kitchen, though extremely convenient if you want to self-cater and cook for yourself, can be problem. There is only one regular sized fridge for the entire hostel, which can probably house close to 40 people. So unless you arrive on a day when the hostel is pretty empty (like I did by arriving on a Sunday), chances are that you likely won't have any room in it to store your food. There is no oven (just a mini-oven), but there is a microwave and four burners. Again, given the fact that this hostel can get quite busy, cooking dinner and then finding a place to sit down (there is only room for 9 people on the 3 tables) can get tricky if you plan on eating around the time people usually have their meal. The staff is very friendly and knowledgeable, so don't be afraid to approach them for ideas and suggestions. They also keep the hostel quite clean. One thing that may or may not work for some travelers is the fact that the hostel is also home to a pub. And for a few hours every evening, the place is more pub than hostel. La Chope, as the pub is known, is not your regular hostel bar. Far from it, it is the local hangout spot for a lot of young people in La Malbaie. There are shows and events several times a week, and these usually finish around 11:30pm. Given the noise and the comings-and-goings of the patrons, you cannot expect to go to bed before that time. The dorms are located right underneath the pub, while the private rooms are right above it. I don't turn in early as a rule, so this wasn't a problem for me. But other people found it quite offputting to be forced to go to sleep that late at night. So keep that in mind before booking here. . . There is a possibility to pay for continental breakfast for 4.50$. All in all, I had a very pleasant stay at L'auberge de jeunesse La Malbaie. Affordable and clean, it is central enough that it allowed me to go hiking in the parc national des Grands-Jardins and parc national des Hautes-Gorges-de-la-Rivière-Malbaie. It's also ideal for anyone who wants to drive on the "Route du fleuve" and "Route des Montagnes," as well as those who plan on taking the ferry to go visit Isle-aux-Coudres. It's not that far from Baie-Saint-Paul and the beach at St-Iréné. All things considered, if you want to do Charlevoix on a budget, this hostel is probably the best option. As always, there is room for improvement. I would add a second fridge in the kitchen in order to accommodate more travelers. And they should definitely buy one of those blue light fly-killer thingie, as the kitchen door is always open and countless flies come in and then annoy you as you cook/eat. I'd definitely go back there if ever I were to return to the beautiful region of Charlevoix!
