Fairmont Le Chateau Montebello garners mixed feedback from guests. Many find the hotel's location enchanting and often commend its warm, rustic atmosphere and cleanliness. However, some travelers feel that the rooms fall short, citing them as outdated and not providing good value for the price.
While the range of amenities, including pools and sports facilities, is appreciated, issues with maintenance have been noted. Service quality is inconsistent, with experiences varying from attentive to unsatisfactory, particularly in dining.

Detailed Reviews
Yet another great stay! I cannot express how amazing the service prior to our arrival and while we were there from the concierge team and especially Nicko who answered so many emails of mine prior to our arrival. The rooms arent huge but thats not why you come here. We had a small issue with our AC unit making some noise but it was quickly fixed the next day after a quick text to the concierge team. The ability to text them is fantastic, I had a question if reservations were required for a 12:30 pm lunch at the buffet during the week and I received a text back saying yes we recommend them and they've already set them up for us. Excellent service! Room service was great, turndown service and mid-day cleaning so there was never a feeling of being rushed to leave the room early. We used the pool, sports center with the big dome in the back. Its setup for just about everything (NOTE: Make reservations for the sport you'd like ie: pickle ball, tennis, badminton, golf, etc and the sports staff will have it all setup for you). Tubing outside was a bit of a let down - the tubing itself is amazing and the hill is GREAT - but the lift doesn't work and its one heck of a workout to get up and down it with the family! Meals were great, Nymark is a great new addition and while traveling with children authentic local foods sometimes arent they're favorite so the restaurant staff had a kids menu and even let them pick from the main restaurant next door should they want. Express check-out and check-in made things that much smoother and let us have our room earlier and an hour later. On site car charging was great, 5 or 6 Tesla chargers (30amp) and 2x J1772 (1x30a and 1x50a) which are all free and please respect the 4 hour limit if you see the chargers are filling up. Only thing I would suggest some attention be paid to - the hot tubs, its tough to maintain a spa when you have so many people in and out I understand that but the water wasn't the best looking and there are tiles missing here and there. Please consider replacing these older tubs with something newer and nicer. All in all a great stay, friendly staff as always, sitting around the fireplace and having a drink while the kids played was exactly what we were looking for. Tip: Send the kids to the front desk or concierge office and have them do the scavenger hunt, if they complete it they get a prize (bag of candy), its not too hard but will keep them nicely occupied!

Hotel's Favourite
The hotel is beautiful and modern but it retains a rustic feel. The grounds are expansive and well kept. There are numerous activities available here. Despite the expansiveness of the site, the different parts are within comfortable walking distance. The meals are superb. Supper was first rate with a good selection of well prepared and presented meals. The breakfast buffet is awesome. There are numerous delicious food items on offer.

A lot to digest? Read an AI-generated summary of recent traveller reviews.
We have always loved Montebello as there really is no other property like it that exists. It has an incredible location on the river, it has a stunning central lounge with a 360 degree fireplace and so much history you feel like you're part of a tradition being there. This was our 4th visit to the hotel, and while the hotel and food were quite good, the service seems to be in some kind of crisis. We had poor service or poor communication multiple times throughout our stay. The most disappointing was trying to get the breakfast included in our stay (we paid just under $500/night for a room and breakfast package). When we arrived Friday evening, we asked about the hours for breakfast and were told that breakfast was served 7:30 - 11 each morning, and that there was a Sunday brunch starting at 11:30. On Sunday we arrived at 9:50am to the dining room and were told the breakfast had ended early so they could set up for the brunch. We suggested they could provide us with the brunch instead, but were told we'd have to pay extra for this (in addition to the $500/night). No attempts at a solution were shown, until a young waitress suggested we order room service, which was still possible. Thank you to her, but it's unfortunate that the "maitre d'" had nothing better to offer. There were multiple other service fails during the weekend, including being required to book outdoor tennis courts and then rudely told by the staff outside that we didn't need a reservation and anyone could use them whenever, problems with sitting on the restaurant terrace (had been raining hours earlier and the staff didn't want to open the patio despite the gorgeous weather and freezing AC inside), waiter who knew less than nothing about any of the wines (despite offering an impressive wine list), understaffing of reception in the evenings meaning we often had to wait 20-30 minutes just to ask a simple question (and usually given the wrong information). The hotel is still beautiful and we will likely be back because the recreational offerings are unparalleled; however, the staff service left a really poor taste in our mouth. Fairmount, you can do better.

On arrival checkin - we went to our rooms to hopefully hurry down to the poor to enjoy the swim and sauna and whirlpool and when we got to the two rooms there was only one robe for the two rooms with 4 people. We had to call down to get the other three robes and it literally took a least 30 mins or more to get someone to bring us the missing robes. We actually even went to the front desk to ask if we can just pick it up ourselves but was told no - someone will bring it to you - yes they did but made us very late and very little time left to enjoy the recreation time before our dinner reservations for 7 pm. The food at the dining room has been below par for the last 3-4 years or so. I do not know if it is change of staff or what. But very much not work the price we paid for the quality of the food. This also goes for the breakfast buffet in the morning. Very disappointed. Also being allcor member - when we got to our rooms - the two rooms had only one little chocolate box with two small chocolates to be shared for 4 adults??? Also the drinks as allcor member was one room with two small bottles of apple juice and one room with one small bottle of bottle juice and one small bottle of mineral water

Highlights
The location is undeniably stunning, with an enchanting setting and a variety of activities for everyone. The site has a certain charm that makes it ideal for a relaxing getaway or active vacation. Additionally, the bar service located in the basement was a true highlight. The bartender was incredibly cheerful and attentive, creating a warm and friendly atmosphere. We had an excellent time sitting at the bar, enjoying his great mood and flawless service. Furthermore, the on-site massage service was particularly relaxing, providing a highly enjoyable experience that allowed us to fully unwind.
Now, let’s talk about the negative experiences:
Unfortunately, the price does not reflect the quality of the overall experience:
Exorbitant prices: At $594 per night for a room without breakfast included, it is excessive. The continental buffet at $86 for two was disappointing and very ordinary.
Room comfort: For the price, the room lacked charm and maintenance. The window insulation was poor, resulting in significant heat loss. We had booked a "deluxe" room, but it did not match the description or our expectations at all.
Poor dinner service: The attitude of our server during dinner was dreadful—unpleasant demeanor, curt tone, and no effort to make the experience enjoyable. We felt neglected compared to other tables with larger groups.
Billing errors: We were charged for meals and drinks we never ordered, which further worsened our experience.
Poorly maintained facilities: The tennis, deck hockey, and basketball courts inside the dome were barely heated, making the activities unpleasant during the winter. We had to play tennis in coats and beanies, which was far from enjoyable.
Conclusion
Château Fairmont Montebello is a beautiful place, but it is far too expensive for the quality of services and amenities provided. My partner and I were disappointed with certain aspects of our stay. While the bar service and on-site massage were standout experiences, the rest of the visit did not meet our expectations for a romantic weekend. You can likely find a much better experience for a more reasonable price.

While the grounds and reception are are beautiful (as are the pool areas), the rooms are not up to Fairmont standards. Sheets were pilled and with some small holes, several black hairs. We asked them to be changed in the morning (it was too late when we noticed getting into bed the night before), nothing was done by that evening; we had to ask again. Drains in bathroom were very slow and clogged, no fan in bathroom. When you are paying near to $600/night, you should reasonable expect good linens. It's an old building, so I'm more forgiving with the plumbing/HVAC stuff. Food at the restaurants is ridiculously expensive for the quality (mid). Very limited options if you are traveling with people with dietary restrictions.

I've been staying at the Château Montebello for the Canada Ski Marathon on and off since I think about 2014 or so. It's always been a bit of an extravagance, but it was the best way to get my kid to come along and do something I wanted to do. And I just plain enjoyed it.
This was the first time I've been back since COVID and I must say, it's gotten stingy. The hotel is as lovely as ever. Staff are kind and friendly. The rooms were clean and well-presented, despite a clientele that is really hard on them (allowing dogs is a long-standing tradition that I expect poses more challenges than it brings in guests).
But the room rates are high as ever (higher even) and the CSM 'package' was not a deal at all.
I am pretty sure the dinner buffet used to be included in the room rate, but I discovered to my shock that it was $70 per person extra per night. The food was as good as ever. No problem there. But that's quite a bit of money for a buffet.
Breakfast was included in the room rate. Unless you're actually doing the whole marathon, which I was. Back before COVID, the dining room opened early enough so that those doing the whole thing could fill up on crĂŞpes and coffee before heading off at 5:00am.
This year, breakfast opened at 5:30 and those who needed to leave earlier — like me — could pay $42 extra for a boîte de lunch.
The capstone in this pyramid of disappointment came when my daughter and I came back after 85km of skiing to try to eat dinner. I had not made a reservation because Friday night I had seen many empty tables and figured getting a spot wouldn't be a problem.
When we staggered up to the host's station on Saturday at 5:50pm I was told they were taking reservations for 8:45. I was aghast. The restaurant was for all intents and purposes empty. The staff explained our options politely and sympathetically and said people would be arriving soon to fill the space.
But the space was never filled. When we came back there were tables that looked untouched and the place was as empty as at 6pm. I get the feeling the hotel just didn't have the staff to cover any more tables and management preferred to turn people away.
The staff kindly took my phone number and called me when they had an available table (20 minutes ahead of schedule) but it was a pretty miserable experience, waiting in our room, exhausted and hungry for the privilege of paying $140 plus tax and tip to eat dinner, an hour before we had to go to bed in order to wake up early and ski again.
I hope the hotel's new owners are a little less austere and a little more hospitality-focussed.

Dear Chris, We appreciate you taking the time to share your detailed feedback on your recent stay at Château Montebello during the Canadian Ski Marathon. We sincerely apologize that your experience did not meet your expectations and our usual standards of quality and service. Allow us to assure you that our team is working hard to ensure that the accommodation and services offered as part of the Canadian Ski Marathon are delivered to the highest standard. We understand your concerns regarding costs and service availability, and we would like to inform you of the steps we have taken to address our guests' needs: Firstly, we provide dedicated rooms for the storage and preparation of ski equipment to facilitate your participation in the event. Furthermore, recognizing the importance of a hearty meal to refuel after a full day on the slopes, we have adjusted the opening hours of our kitchens. They now open 1.5 hours earlier to allow marathon participants to enjoy a nourishing breakfast before their departure. Regarding restaurant reservations, we sincerely regret the inconvenience you experienced. Our staff does indeed depend on reservation rates to ensure optimal service. We understand this can pose challenges, especially when occupancy appears low. We take note of your comments and will strive to improve our communication in the future to avoid any confusion. We are grateful for your loyalty to Château Montebello, and we want to assure you that we take your feedback very seriously. We would be delighted to welcome you back to our property and provide an enhanced experience that meets your expectations of luxury and hospitality. Please feel free to contact us if you would like to discuss your stay further or if you have any specific requests for your next visit. Thank you once again for your feedback, and we hope to have the opportunity to welcome you back again soon. Warm regards,

First, when we arrived the room was not ready, we had to return 3 times to the reception and re-queue to get our cards once the room was ready an hour later. Then, once we arrive at the bar, we are given cardboard glasses to drink cocktails at $16 a glass and refused to serve them in plastic glasses, because there are not enough left. At the pool, more than $75 of the umbrella cloths were torn and half of the chairs were smashed or broken. Moreover, there was a lack of beach towels and straws, which is unacceptable in a supposedly upscale environment. At the BBQ dinner, the service was no match for a table at $72 per person. Staff lacked training and were dressed more like busboys than waiters. The service was expeditious and lacking in class, we felt rather rushed to leave, as if we were bothering the employee. Finally the facilities in general are aging and lacking in maintenance, at the cloakroom almost all the latches to lock the shower doors were broken on the side of the women... in short it was a very bad experience and we will not advise anyone to go.

Our stay at the hotel was a mixed experience. The property is stunning, and the location is exceptional. The staff is friendly and welcoming, but their ability to address issues fell short of our expectations.
The sound insulation in the rooms was abysmal; I could hear every little noise from neighboring rooms, including them brushing their teeth. Honestly, I felt uncomfortable using the bathroom—if I can hear them, they can definitely hear me farting, LOL! Those connecting doors seemed to amplify the noise rather than block it. We were promised a call about changing rooms, but that never happened. With wedding chaos in full swing, who has time to stand in long lines at the front desk?
We were supposed to relax before the wedding, but not even the bride could catch a break with so many issues in our reservations.
Aside from our reservation not being ready, the restaurant has a lovely atmosphere, but the prices and portion sizes were a major letdown. I understand the whole “experience” vibe and the context behind the food, but it felt more like a punchline than a treat. Our waiter took forever to bring our drinks and often forgot our order. Dinner turned into a three-hour marathon, with forgotten food, drinks, and incorrect bills (multiple times)—definitely not ideal during wedding prep! For an min $80 meal, we expected a bit more attention. We didn’t even want to risk breakfast there the next morning, so we opted for Tim Hortons instead.
While we did find some nice moments during our stay, I wouldn’t choose this hotel for a vacation or getaway.

We are on a tour of Iconic Fairmont hotels in the region and as part of that we are guaranteed a room with a view at each hotel. Apparently this doesn’t include this hotel as we were assigned a room immediately off the main lobby with no view at all despite there being rooms in this hotel with lovely views across the River Ottawa. I went back to the front desk and queried this and they just said you’ve got a renovated room and that is your upgrade and if we wanted a river view we’d have to pay extra. Why should we pay extra when this is the minimum we should expect!
The hotel looks spectacular but unfortunately that’s where it ends.
The hotel doesn’t care about customer service. The outdoor pool was closed throughout our stay despite beautiful weather as they can’t be bothered to pay for a lifeguard. Also no bar service outside on the terrace again despite beautiful weather.
Cannot recommend this hotel despite the beautiful setting

They are pretty careful about security at the hotel. Its a quick walk from town (montebello) and you might be able to get onto the site. Even if they stop you, they might allow you to take some pictures. I don't know. We had to go through a security check (room number and/or wrist bands) each time we left and reentered the grounds.
He be Sais pas. Joyeux Noel!
When I stayed there you had to walk outside to get to the pool, there was no way to get from the main building to the pool building using the connecting tunnel. If they have finished renovating the wing with the connection to the pool then you might be able to avoid going outside. I would contact the hotel directly to see how far along they are with the renovation.
Yes - but they have NO hurricane plans or safe places to go. Please ready my feedback.
