I staye recently in this Hacienda, The hotel itself is a very nice Mexican Hacienda, nevertheless i got robbed in the hotel restaruant at 3:00 P.M. and noone in the management team cared about this event..... While standing up for food at the buffet someone stole my cell phone from the table (I assume one of the waitresses) and after 3 days of stay nor the general manager, nor the restaurant manager, noone did anything to get me back my phone. If you go there you will enjoy the hotel but never loose your belongings out of your sight........

This is a traditional Hacienda made into a hotel that both had traditional rooms and also new ones in a fully bee modern area. So you can choose where to stay. Vast green areas for a walk or a run. Tenis courts, inside pool and the Golf course.

We were advised to visit this Hacienda by some friends and were in doubt until the end about if that was the right place for our 5-day vacation (travelling with a 3yr old boy and a 8-month pregnant wife).

Reviews in several sources varied a lot from 5* to 1*, which was somewhat confusing to judge. In the end, it was a good idea to go! The Master suites of s.XVIII are comfortable although the first one we tried was too noisy and the final one had zero access to the free Wi-Fi. We did not suffer from hot during our stay, but it can be obviously be a problem since most of the rooms seem not to be equipped with fans or ac. The bed was too soft for our taste, but the furniture in general was quite OK. Wooden floor is nice and cozzy, in lower category rooms, you may find moquette (not ideal).

The open spaces were great, the feeling of a safe environment is very relaxing and the personnel was mostly helpful, although somewhat slow even with less than 50% occupancy. The restaurant has a limited offer in terms of variety, but I found the dishes well prepared in general (of course you can find better restaurants in other places in Mexico, but this was an OK in-house service). Prices were consistent with the style and profile of the venue.

I have been to Cantalagua at least 6 times in the past. In general it has been a very good experience..... but not this time. The room was way too hot and the fan hardly worked, the carpet in that part of the hotel is old and for several days (until I complained) they didn’t clean the carpet in my room AT ALL. The icing on the cake was that the hotel insisted on charging us 500 pesos for a towel card that we never lost - the cleaners had picked up a pool towel from one of the rooms of our family group, without leaving a card in its place. Their towel card system is ridiculous, it’s easy to “lose” a towel just due to their disorganization, and instead of admitting they could have made a mistake they just insist on charging the client- a clear case of “the client is always wrong “. I am disappointed: our family group booked 6 rooms and spent well over 100,000 pesos in the hotel in just 4 days, and still they charged for a towel they had no proof we had lost, an old towel that wouldn’t cost even 100 pesos. My advice is don’t go when it’s hot or when the hotel is full, this time both the infrastructure and the service were not good enough to justify the price!

Last mid May I spent a working week in Hacienda Cantalagua, being away from the "business as usual" office days and distractions, the entire team gets to focus on the tasks and work in a timeless atmosphere of peace and quiet.

It is said (and probably true) that this 18th century Hacienda (Built in 1744), at some point hosted the independence leader Father Miguel Hidalgo, and that he might have performed a Catholic mass in the chapel.

These stories really capture my imagination as I walked the halls and beautiful gardens. As I said time seems to stop for you to relax and meditate.

If meditation, business, or family trips this hotel has something for everyone, meeting rooms, golf course, water park horse riding, and a new modern hotel area of the 21rst century architecture.

Rooms at the Historic section, are very large, wood floors and ceilings, big bathroom with ample closets, Jacuzzi tub enough for 4 people. Double sink and 36-42" flat tv and cable.

Furniture is good, not luxurious, could improve to reflect the historic spirit, seems too minimalistic, not much classic mexican decorations in the rooms, at some point the bedsides and tables feel a little empty.

Bed is huge, with pillow buffet and a nice wide chest at the feet of the bed.
No air conditioning, climate is template but it can get cold end wet, so you can order an electric radiator at no extra charge.

In-room Amenities are acceptable, I kind of missed small hand towels, for some reason couldn't find small towels at hand when using the sink for shaving or hand washing and had to use the large tub-shower towels.

Food is very good, you'll find good examples of great true traditional mexican food. Perhaps details like presentation and variety can improve, taste and service are great.

A very positive experience indeed... I enjoyed the architecture of the buildings, the gardens, the museum room, and the small chapel with the Guadalupe Virgin image. I'm bringing the kids in a long weekend soon to enjoy the pools, horse riding and water park.

I hope you find this helpful!

Unfortunately this weekend I had very bad experience at this "Hotel - Hacienda Cantalagua". Someone came to my room to STEAL ...

When we gave notice to staff, the responsible persons used a machine to download information from the lock at the door, because there is no security cameras. With this we got a report that showed something INCREDIBLE SURPRISE... a person entered into the room while I was at an event inside the facility, this was at 10.57 pm and the report showed us that were cards (keys) but the hotel manager.

When the manager serves to give us an answer of what had happened, his attitude was TERRIBLE ... He never give us an apology for what happened and he never was consistent in his explanation, he said that the cleaning people enter to the room to clean (at 23 hours), He told me he had been my fault for not keeping my stuff in the safes of the room; I want to share what was lost was "Underwear and cash" and he believes that this should have been kept in the safe, can you believe it !!? This person told me that for the timing could not solve anything and they had to do some investigations.

It´s incredible that people who are not TRAINED, are at the front of such places, they can not solve a problem for the customer... that is very clear was their error, since the machine threw information. The atention that I received "TERRIBLE" for not keeping my stuff LOL. This is totally ABSURD and SILLY from this person.

In my annoyance, I asked to see a report of the rooms and the people enter to the rooms for cleaned at 10.57 pm and was told they did not have it ... that´s really weird !!?. It really is a shame that claim to be a good hotel, make to believe this to their customers and their treatment and explanations to problems are UNACCEPTABLE.

BEWARE !! as advice... keep their clothes in the safes of the rooms, ask people cleaning their rooms between normal and common schedules and count each dollar of your money.

The place is great, but there are some small details that could be improved. I agree that the restaurant service isn't great, but the food is awesome. People on the desk are also not very skilled. However, if you take a horse ride or a motorcycle ride, people are very friendly and helpful.

I've stayed @ Cantalagua about 4 times, 2 with my family and 2 in corporate events. The location is beautiful, the place is well groomed, the gardens are spectacular, the food is pretty good if you pay for the weekend on a "package" basis, but not worth the price on a stand-alone basis. The new room section "Siglo 21" is quite nice, the rooms are spacious and modern but the temperature can really come down and they only have this small heater that screams for help to heat up the large space. On one of my stays they made my room until after 3.00 pm which is too late for any standard.
The indoor pool is warm and the temperature of the water is enticing.
If you are a golf player I hear this place is very nice... but even if you are not, there are other activities that are up to par, mountain-biking, horse-back riding or just talking a walk around the hacienda.

Beginning the year one of my goals was to see the famous monarch butterflies in the state of Michoacan, Mexico. Leaving from Mexico City on Saturday morning we drove the 3 hours to the sanctuary of the butterflies and hiked the mile (yes...uphill) to reach the crest of the hill. Around me I saw 2 or 3 butterflies floating around...but where were the rest? Walking a bit futher across the top of the hill I literally ran into trees covered with thousands and thousands of butterflies, who migrate to Mexico from the US and Canada each year.

Following this truly amazing experience it was time to head somewhere for the night and we chose Hacienda Cantalagua, which is close to the sanctuaries of the butterflies. THe hotel is an ex-Hacienda that has been turned into a hotel. Do not expect ultra-luxury, but rather a very nice hotel with excellent food.

To my surprise, upon arriving at the hotel, I discovered that the hotel itself also hosts weekends to especially see the butterflies, so you can contact them to arrange your trip up to the mountains. The hotel is in the middle of the autopista between Toluca and Morelia, so is an excellent stopping place if you are driving your own vehicle, for it is easy to continue on to Morelia, Patzcuaro and other sites afterwards.

Enjoy! And do not miss the butterflies!

For the hotel portion of this facility, we would extend an excellent rating since the room was large, beautiful and very comfortable! The grounds were outstanding. But our one letdown was the restaurant and their dinner menu as it just didn't live up to our expectations from the rest of the facility.

One does wonder how they chose this location virtually in the middle of no where and a fair distance from the cuota?
