Have been going to this hotel since I was six years old - that was 40 years ago. It has retained its traditional charm and quality throughout this whole time. Quite remarkable. Beautifully positioned and well appointed, this lovely hotel - that has been here since the 1800s - will delight you. Start your own tradition at The Borrowdale!

My partner & I stayed here for two nights on a B, B & evening meal basis. We very rarely do the evening meal deal in hotels, but my my what a surprise! The food was excellent. They bought us an "amuse bouche" both nights & these can be a waste of time in some restaurants but I immediately thought...

Booked a two night break through Secret escapes and definitely did not want to leave. All aspects were good. Nice room, good service and great food. Even had 3 decent real ales on draught! Had a great day walking round Derwent water, with a stop for lunch in Keswick. We will definitely return

We visited the Borrowdale Hotel without a booking with the hope of a seat by the bar. That's exactly what we got! Even on a very busy bank holiday night the staff went out of their way to create a personalised rapport with ourselves and other diners and the food! Wow! Could not fault it! Would highly recommend a visit.

Stayed here for a Sunday night on DBB rate. Food and service excellent. There is a roast carved at the table as an option ( we went for the guinea fowl- superb) and it was served to the table next to us on an enormous wheeled platter - when the dome was slide back the pierce of pork was tiny...

Thank you for taking the time to review. Sorry the roast pork joint was small, but I am sure it was just as tasty. With the carving trolley proving to be such a popular attraction we would never put the joints on any other platter other than the heated trolley. I appreciate the comparisons to Ladore, I will take that......and...

We stayed for 2 nights and I will definitely be making a return trip. The staff were awesome and nothing was too much trouble. What summed up our holiday was how they were accommodating to our dog. We didn't like leaving him in the room on his own whilst we were having breakfast so the staff would set up a...

Thank you for taking the time to post your review and I am delighted that you enjoyed your stay. Dogs are an integral part of our business and marketing strategies and our aim is to make them welcome with the owners in the appropriate areas of the hotel with as few restrictions as possible. I took time to read some of the previous criticisms and went with an open mind. We took a dinner, bed & breakfast deal off the internet that also included tea and scones on arrival. I booked a prestige room and went with a dog. Everything was superb. Only criticism was the bar tender could be a little more welcoming,...

We stayed there on a package deal, for two nights bed and breakfast plus evening meal. Our medium-sized room had a good view down the valley. The room was in very good condition, apparently fairly recently decorated, with a nice bathroom. The hotel generally was well decorated and in good condition (it's 150 years old, and slightly rambling, not a...

Disgusting treatment of my wife who suffered an asthma attack the minute we arrived at The Borrowdale Hotel (we didn't know it was a dog friendly hotel). The gentleman who purported to be the manager of the Borrowdale Hotel was more concerned about loosing revenue on our room than my wife's distressing condition.....beggars believe. The room that we had paid...

Official Description (provided by the hotel)
Nestled at the foot of Shepherd's Crag in the beautiful valley of Borrowdale, this completely refurbished 4 Star hotel has a totally unique atmosphere enveloping the visitors from the moment they arrive. Warm and welcoming fires in the Winter and cool drinks and Lakeland cream teas on the lawns in the Summer served with a smile. Built in 1866, the Borrowdale Hotel has an interesting history with the original 41 room bells, which, although no longer working, are still proudly displayed outside the reception area. The restaurant has been refurbished to a very high standard and is very elegant and comfortable. It also now boasts a superb walk-in wine cellar stocked with some very interesting bottles. During the day the lounge bar and conservatory are open for light lunches and afternoon teas and in the evening a splendid 5 course silver service dinner can be enjoyed in the restaurant with coffee and mints served in the lounges. The 40 cosy bedrooms have all been refurbished within the last 3 years all have TV, telephone and hospitality tray. There are also 2 extra large, easy-access rooms too. If you are arriving or leaving on a Sunday make sure not to miss the famous Sunday lunch - it is well worth trying, but remember to book your table well in advance, as it is particular popular with both locals and residents. For those looking for dog friendly hotels, all of our bedrooms are dog friendly and are available for well behaved dogs. Please contact reservations for information about our dog friendly accommodation. ... more   less
