Harpur's is a busy, vibrant community pub, with several guest rooms. Our second floor room was comfortable and warm (thanks to an oil filed radiator as well as central heating), with a well fitted and attractive en-suite shower room. The staff are friendly and efficient and we liked the informality of the hotel. Breakfast on Sunday morning was excellent; on this occasion we did not dine in the restaurant.
I have stayed overnight at Harpurs upon quite a few occasions and have always been made to feel very welcome. It is not overpriced, the rooms are clean and modern, the highlight of the stay is usually dinner in the restaurant, which has a real buzz, the food is high quality with plenty of choice, the service friendly and very helpful, the wine list is extensive. It’s rather hard to understand the handful of poor reviews here from. my perspective.
I am afraid this was a very poor experience particularly around the building and service. The food itself was good. In summary the issues were: 1 - Too many tables in the room 2 - Staff that did not appear to want to be there 3 - We had to ask for menus that were then shoved our way with no conversation 4 - We had to ask to order both our main course and desserts 5 - No one asked if everything was good whilst we were eating nor when taking the plates 6 - No salt and pepper on the table 7 - 2 people’s main courses arrived. It must have been 5 minutes before the other 2 appeared with the vegetables whilst the initial food was going cold The food however was good particularly the carrots in honey. We were looking forward to dining at Harpurs but it was a big let down so will be back to the Baytree next time.…
Staying for 1 night by myself for work. Hotel bedroom is lovely, really modern & clean. Food was beautiful, high quality & good size portions. Unfortunately the noise will mean I won’t return or recommend. In my bedroom the noise from the bar beneath me is so loud I can even hear the conversations & the music beyond 10pm. The window in my room doesn’t close properly so the road noise which I’m overlooking is also loud keeping me awake with people leaving the bar below. I did report the window & was informed they would send housekeeping…this was 4 hours ago. One other disappointment is that breakfast is not served until after 9am which is too late when work starts at 8.30 so not recommended for a work stay. If you want a drink & a nice meal visit but not if you want a peaceful nights sleep.…
My wife and I were bowled over by the friendly personal welcome we received at this busy bar and restaurant. We were particularly impressed by our waitress, Kacey, whose genuine warmth, wonderful smile and superb efficiency made our evening. The food was really good too!
Thank you Freya for the great service this evening. As ever great meal, great environment, great ambience and great service from you. Great menus with perfect choice. Phishing selection if you can manage it - awesome. Thank you and see you again soon.
Visiting our daughter and she made a reservation at Harpurs for unch for the three of us. I ordered a Salad Nicoise and my husband a Caeser Salad with Chicken. My husbands salad had chicken that was not completely cooked and my Salad Nicoise was missing 80% of the elements that should have been there - masses of lettuce, no dressing, raw beans , an undercooked egg and a few slices of potato were the only things present! I did not complain at the time as it was my daughters treat and I didn't want to upset her. However, I emailed Harpurs later that day but have not had the courtesy of a reply
Overall, after being in over the weekend and Friday, it was a good experience. Yet for one member of staff, about 5’8, black ish hair member of the team, the same can not be said. All of the other staff seemed friendly, smiling, happy. However, this lady, had a sour look, not an easy approachable character like the other members working, on Friday and Sunday. I also overheard her using a slur which is never acceptable to use even in gesture, referring to someone as “a retard”. I don’t know wether it was meant to be as loud as it was, but i am truely hurt and astonished by the overall impression she gave off. Would not return on account of this. Tried to see wether Sundays experience was different. Whilst she was working again, i didn’t get served by her. Which was a relief to me.…
We stayed here for one night and the room was amazing, we paid extra for the suit with the roll top bath and it was certainly worth it. The bed was so comfy and huge aswell, the only downside which was quiet an issue was the noise outside. It started around 7am wether it was gas bottles of beer kegs we couldn't figure out but it's not what you expect in a quiet village been woken by this, after this we then struggled to get back to sleep due to other noises going on outside
Great hotel and excellent service. We stayed here to attend a wedding. Even though our room was not ready on arrival, the manager gave us a room to change in, which was very kind. The room we were finally allocated was in an annexe of the hotel, across the road. The room was very small and the bathroom was so compact, there was not enough space between the shower and toilet. The mugs in the room were large, which was excellent as I love a large mug of tea. The only downside was the size of the room and the fact they don’t offer breakfast on a Monday, so as it was a bank holiday, there was nowhere else to have breakfast, which was very disappointing.
