The area by the marsh is really good for a drink, the waiting staff running the area were great, really attentive and chatty.
Now the negatives. We paid £180 for a small not particularly special room, I would say this is at least £80 too much.
We dined in the restaurant in the evening as the food came highly recommended. I’m afraid the whole experience left us cold. All of the waiting staff bar one lady were very poor, I would go as far as to say they were snobby and disinterested.
The food, whilst tasty, was very expensive and the portions were tiny. The quality was ok, nothing special.
I won’t go into the whole wanting to sit by the window to enjoy the view at an empty table episode.
The choices on the menu were not great, very limited. Not a sniff of a daily “catch of the day” special, surprising for a restaurant located in the sea shore.
The breakfast was an absolute joke. We sat down at around 8:30 and the fantastic table waiting team sorted the coffee and toast(burnt) promptly. At around 9:30 we received our breakfast. It was cold and the quality was terrible. I ate it as I couldn’t be bothered to wait for another hour for a warm breakfast.
After this we left. My wife raised the issue with the reception as we checked out.
On the whole the stay was very average. I would not stay here again and I would not recommend anyone to eat in the restaurant. I get the impression it is living on past glories and resting on its laurels. Not great.
We were in the large dining room which had been stripped of tables apart from about 4 or 5 making it cold and uninviting. The service was offhand and unsmiling and the phrase "all meals thrown in" springs to mind. We had a variety of starters as the main course alternatives were very limited but our Granddaughter opted for the fish and chips. The starters were conspicuous by their lack of substance including a slice of smoked salmon costing £13.00!!! Granddaughter's chips were disgustingly undercooked and hadn't even had uneatable sections cut out before "cooking". We mentioned this to the unsmiling waiter who just muttered that he would "tell the Chef" Too late my Friend-damage done.
For this wholly unpleasant evening we paid £110.00 but never again.
This place is now resting on its expensive laurels but will not see another penny of my money.I KNOW it is operating under extreme circumstances but that is not an excuse for rubbish food and rubbish service.
As I say "never again"and I will be writing to the CEO of the Group that owns this establishment.
That said when we finally entered the bar we were warmly greeted by a young man who sent us to reception where the young lady was equally as pleasant. Check in was efficient and we were soon in our rooms which were spacious and clean.
Adequate hanging space for a few nights in open fronted module, tea & coffee in room.
No Safe or fridge in the room, the second day we had to go downstairs and request milk for our tea.
The bathroom was rather tired with filler applied roughly to the bath/shower area, also the two chairs in our room had covers which were not fitted and screwed up. This was disappointing.
Our room was over the bar area and despite it being warm we had to shut the windows the second evening as music was playing underneath and some loud people had taken up residence until 11.00. The view was of the main road.
One thing to note re the Garden rooms, the sitting area faces onto the carpark so if you sit there in the daytime there are cars coming & going it isn’t very private.
Breakfast was excellent with a good choice, as a group we tried several of the items offered on the menu and none disappointed. Service was good.
Evening Meal in the restaurant was excellent both nights and it’s a plus only having to wander upstairs to bed.
A short stroll through the car park takes you to the Marshes and beautiful views, plus the coastal path walk.
Overall would we stop again, yes I think so, food and staff were great………… but for the price I think the rooms could benefit from some TLC and I would want to know that I could park if I decided to take a drive out for the day! Basically it is a pub charging hotel prices.
We ordered two Bombay Sapphire Gins [£8] and Fevertree Tonics [£5]. Although the delightful barman recommended the Haddock with poached egg etc, we had already decided to choose 2 x Moules as our main course [£33]. Beautifully served with fresh warm bread, butter and a moist wipe for our hands. My partner also chose a 175ml glass of Wild South Sauv Blanc [£7.80]. We shared three scoops of Salted Caramel ice cream [£5.75] and 2 Cappiccinos [£6.40]. Service, food and wine all of the highest standard, the facilities are superb and ultra clean. It's definitely the place to dine if you are in the area. Plenty of parking and fabulous views and walks. Total £65.95 + tip.
We have visited the White Horse on a number of times and the changes that have been made to make it Covid safe are superb. The addition of the marquee is brilliant, the service was excellent and the staff were very welcoming and cheerful.
Although the number of tables in the restaurant has been reduced there was still a relaxed and friendly atmosphere and the food to its usual high standards.
We will be back.
