Nestled in the heart of Thirsk's market square, The Golden Fleece Hotel emerges as a convenient stay, celebrated by many for its central location and complimentary parking. While guests are charmed by its inviting atmosphere and thoughtful decor, the service quality at this hotel appears to fluctuate, ranging from commendable helpfulness to occasions of disorganization. Rooms are generally appreciated for their style and comfort, yet some guests suggest improvements in maintenance and shower cleanliness. The value proposition is debated; some find it reasonable, others less so.

Bought the 2 night voucher, glad we did, the hotel is bang in the middle of this small market town a short drive from York or Harrogate. We received a very warm welcome upon arrival, We were allocated room 20 in the Mews which is a small annexe at the back of the main building. It really was nice and cosy the room was very clean and tidy and had everything you need, tea coffee making facilities and even an iron and ironing board.

The car park is at the back of the hotel and is free of charge, we slept with the window open and we didn't hear any noise at all and had a good night sleep both nights. Breakfast is outstanding good local quality products only no cutting corners here, I really did enjoy it and it set us both up for the rest of the day.
We ate out the first night but choice outside was pretty limited so we decided to eat in the second night, glad we did food was great and really good value for money. The front of house staff work hard and are very polite and attentive.
For those on a tight budjet fear not the pub next door is a Weatherspoons, great choice of cheap food and beer. But I would recommend eating in the Hotel, the choice and quality of the food is outstanding.
We were both really impressed with this hotel and I would have no hesitation in recommending it to anyone visiting the Yorkshire Dale's.

The management and staff have done everything they possibly can to make the Hotel Covid safe, clearly marked one way systems, automatic sanitiser dispensers at the entrance to the hotel and the dining room, they were also actively challenging people to sanitise their hands, perhaps this is why there are a few negative reviews on the restaurant page as some people think this is all nothing to do with them. Our room was clean and well maintained, unlike so many places every light bulb was working, its amazing how many places have at least one blown bulb in the room. The only negative point is that if you are a person who likes to read in bed there are no lights that shine from behind. As we were staying for three nights there was no housekeeping, on the two occasions when we asked for extra supplies they were delivered in less than 5 minutes. Another great plus point, the in room tea and coffee tray was well stocked, breakfast tea, fruit tea, coffee bags both ordinary and decaffeinated, hot chocolate, biscuits and even two chocolate bars. So many places think that 2 teabags, and 2 ordinary plus 2 decaffeinated coffee sachets and a couple of uht milk sachets are enough. We ate in for three evening meals and three breakfasts, at all times the staff were very pleasant, even though they were very busy on Saturday morning and things were a little slower. Fresh fruit, toast, fruit juice etc were all available on demand plus the hot menu. Evening meals were to the standard we expect from the coaching inns group good combinations of flavours and ingredients and for a reasonable price, once again cannot quite grasp the person complaining on the restaurant review page about the prices, we've eaten out more than 20 times in the past three months across 5 different Counties in England ranging from Cornwall to Cumbria, the Golden Fleece prices are typical of everywhere we've been. Perhaps the complainer should stick to Wetherspoons ?

Highly recommend this hotel. Staff were superb during difficult and challenging times 👏 very organised from arrival to check out. Clear guidance under current guidelines. Multiple automated hand sanitisers 👊 Facilities were spotless, room was lovely with everything we needed. Food in restaurant was amazing.
.... Best steak sandwich we've ever had! Cooked to perfection. Breakfast was delicious with lashings of toast and coffee. Excellent local knowledge when chatting to staff. My parents were in same hotel Monday - Friday. They were so well looked after, totally spoilt and are looking to going back next year. Thanks to the amazin team , stay safe xx 🌈🌈💙💙

We had 3 fans as our room was too hot. The sash windows we propped open with some card. I had to request they replace the feather duvets with a sheet as the temperatures were 26°c. The housekeeping staff were excellent, friendly and very helpful. Hit and miss with the waitressing staff even though we were guests at the hotel, which meant that sometimes they would come to your table and serve you and at others you had to go to the bar for each course of your meal. On one occasion part of our food order was returned to the kitchen because a mistake was made and on another occasion an item was missed from the food order. In terms of the bill it is quite confusing and if you drink soda water you can get charged a different rate on different days. This was noticed when I checked the bill at home. The rooms need to have air conditioning in this day and age. We stayed at the Tebay Hotel, Cumbria the night before and found the hotel there offered bigger rooms for less money. We had a dog with us. In the Tebay Hotel you entered your room to find a mat and 2 dog bowls plus a healthy dog dental chew and a note to advise you where there were green spaces for you to take your dog to for toileting. At the Tebay Hotel they provide flannels as well as towels and a shower cap. At Tebay you can have kippers for breakfast. On a positive note the menu is lovely and the rooms and eating areas are clean. I think they might be short staffed on the waitressing side. To be honest I will now check in future about air conditioning.

My wife and I recently enjoyed a short two night break at The Golden Fleece. I was very impressed with all of the positive reviews but, based on past experience nowhere is 100% perfect.
Well, The Golden Fleece comes very very close. We arrived last Monday and received a warm welcome from Jim, the Duty Manager. Checked in without fuss. Nice chap (sorry can't remember your name) helped me with luggage up to Room 12.
The room overlooks the market square in Thirsk and what impressed me was how peaceful and quiet it was. The room was very comfortable, well appointed with lots of storage space and an excellent hospitality tray.
We enjoyed a superb dinner on our first night in the very cosy restaurant with a bottle of wine which was very reasonable compared to other hotels we've stayed in.
After a good nights sleep, down to a full English breakfast next morning, very relaxed and no rush. Excellent choice of fresh fruits, juices etc.
We decided not to have an evening meal the next day and opted instead for afternoon tea. Congratulations to The Golden Fleece for a novel idea....an afternoon tea for gentleman. This is an option for those who don't have a sweet tooth where the usual choice of cakes and scone with jam is replaced with a hot sausage roll, Yorkshire ham and pickles and a wedge of the most superb Harrogate Blue cheese. Also a cheese scone which I just couldn't manage after all of the other treats. My wife really enjoyed her traditional tea as well.
I would like to commend all of the staff at this gem of a hotel. In my opinion, you can have the best food, most comfortable bed and luxurious surroundings but if the staff aren't committed to providing good service, then you are wasting your money.
Apparently the ethos of the Coaching Inns Group is to invest in the staff so that guests will enjoy their experience and return and also recommend the hotels to family and friends. All I can say is well done and thank you, it wouldn't be fair to single any one out for special mention as you were all great at your jobs and looked as if you really enjoyed providing a first class experience to guests.
We will definitely be back in the summer when hopefully we can sample the outdoor seating area with a pizza and bottle of wine.
Can't recommend this hotel enough. Thanks to all involved.

The hotel sits right in the centre of Thirsk and has a large car park round the back with access onto the main square. We were allocated a room in The Mews, a block of rooms running perpendicular to the main hotel which was perfect as we were able to park the car right at our door.
The room was nexy to the access door for the rooms upstairs whch resulted in a wee bit of noise as people entered and went up the stairs but it wasn't bad.
The room itself was a great size with a big shower room and had all the amenities we needed plus a coffee machine and a dab radio. Two fans were provided as it was warm and coffee pods, buscuits etc were replenished each day.
We had breakfast each morning and it was very good. The menu catered for everyone with continental to full Yourkshire and plenty in between.
We ate in the restaurant one night and the food was seriously good. This was three courses of quality dining, with probably the best sticky pudding my wife has every tasted and believe me, she's had a few.
My hake and crab ravioli deserves a mention as it was excellent.
The location is great for visiting the Yorkshire Dales, moors and even the coast if you fancy a day out.
This was a perfect base for our first three days in Yorkshire and the staff were all very friendly and welcoming from the reception to the restaurant staff.A special mention for the girl who served us at breakfast, great staff member,
The hotel has a bar and outside seating area but we headed out to gtry some of the local pubs, all within a short walk.

We stayed for a couple of nights from the 31st July because we had originally booked for Thirsk races and we always stay at the Golden Fleece unfortunately there is no racing but we thought we’d still stay to show some loyalty towards the hotel. The stay was good but nothing is quite the same but one thing which niggled me into writing this was something that happened at breakfast. Due to current circumstances there is no buffet breakfast but only single options which include a full breakfast plus tea/coffee and toast, we asked if we could have a glass of orange juice which wasn’t a problem until we were told we had to pay extra for it. The problem with this was when we booked we paid for the full breakfast including continental which wasn’t a problem but thought it was extremely tight being asked to pay for the juice especially the amount we paid for the room. The other thing that the hotel has stopped doing is the loyalty bonus of rebooking a future stay at a 20% reduced rate before you leave the hotel called bounce back. We’ve stayed at the Golden Fleece many times over the years especially for the racing but other times also including the Christmas deal, but feel as though the hotel is missing a trick by withdrawing this offer and we may now look for an alternative on our future stays in Thirsk due to the breakfast incident.

My husband and I stayed for two nights at The Golden Fleece in Thirsk , Yorkshire. The welcome was so friendly and warm and we were delighted with the decor throughout the hotel and in our room especially. Though the room was very small, it had everything (& more) that we could want, plus a lovely large bathroom with perhaps the loveliest organic toiletries I've ever had in a hotel. I just cannot believe that this hotel is listed as a three star. In fact that rating almost put me off booking, but I am so glad we did. The hotel is right in the middle of Thirsk, on the market place where there is a good choice of pubs and restaurants, and lots of nice walks.
We ate in the hotel restaurant on our first night and the food and service was top class, as was the breakfast on each morning. The second night we ate in Bianco, an Italian restaurant on the square - also excellent and unbelievably good value for money ( 2 x two course meals + bottle of wine + coffee - £45!)
We will definitely recommend this hotel to friends and family and will look forward to going back, hopefully soon.

Although the room we had was small (Room 1) it was more than adequate for our requirements, it was very clean and comfortable (apart from the pillows, they could do with replacing), with quality toiletries, beverage tray along with bottled water. One of the best things about the Fleece is its staff, Reception, Bar, Restaurant and Breakfast, all were friendly and attractive, I can't praise them enough, they are a credit to the hotel.
Would highly recommend the Golden Fleece.

I recently went to the Golden Fleece with friends on a Saturday evening around 10pm.
The staff were rude and doing you a favour.
We asked for some coffee and were told cannot do them the machine is being cleaned 10pm in a hotel bar on a Saturday evening not acceptable.
Then we asked for some more drinks at 10.30 to be told bar is closed.

I eat there and the food was complete rubbish

The prices are expensive too.

Staff training does not exist or if it does it's poor as the manor of the staff leaves a lot to be desired.

Hi, as far as I could see the main building did not have access for wheelchairs to the rooms that are up stairs. However there are some rooms off the car park at the back which may have wheelchair access but I suggest you double check with reception before booking.
