We recently returned from an extended festive break at The Carpenters Arms which was our fourth stay over the past twelve months and can honestly say it was one of the most wonderful Christmas and New Year holidays we have EVER had. From the moment we arrived to glasses of mulled wine and a thoughtfully decorated Christmas tree in our room we knew that we were in for a truly magical stay, and goodness did they exceed all expectations - we honestly could not have asked for more if Father Christmas himself had been in charge! From start to finish our stay was just perfect in every way. Tasteful, unassuming and joyous. We laughed, we danced, we made merry with new friends, but most of all we left with some of the most wonderful memories to treasure always. The standard of the food during our stay was consistently outstanding and delicious, from breakfast through to dinner and all coming from locally sourced produce. Nothing was too much trouble for the chef, and any special requests were not only met but always went way above and beyond what we could have hoped for, even during busy periods. The accommodation is luxurious whilst at the same time being very comfortable, with every home comfort provided for, and the standard of housekeeping is first class. You really feel like you are staying in a home from home, with warm and inviting public areas and lovely grounds to enjoy whatever the weather. But what really makes The Carpenters Arms so very special is the people. From the moment you arrive staff and locals alike wrap you up in so much warmth and kindness that you feel like you have come home, and simply cannot imagine ever wanting to leave. Under the expert direction of Paulo the General Manager all of the staff work extremely hard to make your stay memorable, whilst at the same time maintaining a relaxed and inviting atmosphere. They are there if you need them, but always respectful and discreet if you don’t. It is rare to find such a unique combination of total professionalism and attention to detail, combined with warmth, personality and a genuine wish by all to make sure you leave feeling relaxed, refreshed and above all special. Having travelled and stayed in five star establishments all over the world, we can honestly say that you would be hard pushed to find anywhere as special as The Carpenters Arms to stay at or eat - if you could bottle what they provide you really would have hit the jackpot! Most of all though it is a little corner of paradise where wonderful memories are made, and where you arrive as guests but leave as friends. Be it for a short break, a special occasion or simply a holiday away from it all, we have stayed here in every season and never once found it to be anything but truly outstanding. We simply cannot praise this gem of a place highly enough. Try it, you really won’t be disappointed.

We we’re upgraded to a lovely large garden room which is effectively a suite. It was well equipped with excellent underfloor heating in the bathroom, which had a bath and large shower. The food at dinner was delicious, well cooked and looked very appetising on the plate. It was a varied menu with interesting specials. On Saturday evening the restaurant was busy and buzzing but it wasn’t noisy and service was speedy, efficient and attentive. There was a good choice on the breakfast menu and everything was beautifully cooked, and we had the opportunity to enjoy the view from the restaurant, which was amazing. We’ll be back!

We booked two rooms 1 and 2 as it transpired which were very spacious, comfortable, spotless, and so quiet! Our family had a perfect time together thanks to the ENTIRE staff. Kitchen, maintenance, service, bar and room staff, please keep up the hard work, truly appreciated. We all felt comfortable and assured during the pandemic regarding your well thought out systems you have in place. This was our first time, not the last, already planning a return!

Let’s start off with the positives. The location is beautiful, the garden is stunning, our room was lovely and the food was excellent !! What was missing I hear you ask …. Well it’s difficult to put into words but I feel there was a lack of attentiveness and engagement from the staff. Whether this was down to new management or lack of training I’m not sure. Having worked in the hospitality industry for many years I think this is just so
Important especially given that B&B was £200 per night.

Also an information card in the room would be helpful. I appreciate during COVID this was probably removed but a laminated A4 sheet or similar would suffice. Luckily our lovely cleaner explained to us about the intricacies of opening the patio door, windows, blinds etc.

Lastly the courtyard/car park were not lit which made the steps and path to and from our garden room a little treacherous to say the least (especially in heels and after a glass of wine) !!!

Come on guys …. with a bit of effort this Hotel could be excellent !!!!

We called in for lunch on returning from a trip to York. Were delighted that they served lunch until 2.30pm.
Recommend the Wagyu burger - really tasty and is served with trimmings (inc chunky chips).
Service was excellent.

Excellent dog friendly hotel we stayed for 2 nights all rules and regulations are being followed for Covid 19and didn’t impact on the excellent service received, very clean room very spacious, view from the room was lovely with a little private patio with garden furniture, dog bowl and blanket mat supply for the dog in the room. Restaurant we received excellent service from all staff and all staff were very friendly with us and the dog, nothing was too much trouble, we ate in the restaurant 2 night, food was very good and reasonably priced. We ate breakfast in our room one morning, it arrived on time and hot, would recommend this hotel and would visit again.

I booked a one night stay for my mum's birthday with little knowledge of the pub or the surrounding area. It was fantastic, I would jump at the chance to stay again and will definitely be recommending to friends/family. The staff couldn't have been more friendly (across the board from bar staff to waiters to management to cleaners), going out of their way to help us and make us feel welcome with subtle personal touches that really made a difference to the overall experience. The pub itself looks brand new and feels modern and clean but with the character you look for in a country pub. We sat in the gorgeous grounds for drinks and lunch as the weather was warm and sunny, and had an evening meal in the pub too. Again, service was perfect and the food and drink was delicious and very reasonably priced. Menu is varied and it was clear that the heritage and locality of produce is a big focus for the group. Breakfast was included in the room with lots of choice (continental and hot) and plenty of tea refills. And the room was exactly what we wanted and more. Spacious, lovely views into the garden and beyond, nice big bathroom and powerful shower with lovely products too. Small touches such as robes and nespresso machine in the room meant it felt v luxurious. Our room didn't have a fire but can imagine it'd be lovely to stay in the winter too. Everything was easy. Very peaceful setting and awoke to birdsong. No noise from neighbouring rooms. I can see why it has won so many awards. Will absolutely be returning.

We booked for 2 nights inc. New Years Eve back in October. We were allocated 2 super King bedrooms, one turned out to be only a double,we asked for 2 twins, the other was not made up but was a super King. The bathrooms were well equipped. At no point were we warned that the noise from the bar & disco would be unbearable til 3a.m. Drinks were still being served so unsurprisingly some guests were so drunk there was an unpleasant swearing fracas outside our windows after 3a.m.
So if you go, be sure to book a garden room. The food was good and most of the staff were helpful and pleasant.

Due to missing both my wife's and myself's birthday and wedding anniversary due to Covid 19 we decided to book a spontaneous night away. Lovely place and quiet too well recommended. Despite having the disabled garden room it was well suitable for the two of us and during our stay we were well looked after by the staff who controlled the social distancing issue admirrably. The only slight niggle was during heck out when we were asked of we would like to give a gratuity given as we were putting the pin number in at the time I felt somewhat obligated to add a figure on. I would gladly have given a gratuity but would like the option to be pointed out prior to payment that said I would definately return.

The Carpenters Arms is an absolutely ideal pub for anyone visiting North Yorkshire. It is ideally located between the Yorkshire Dales and the North Yorkshire Moors - both great tourist areas - and just a short drive from Thirsk.
The pub boasts 10 rooms, 8 of which are very high specification garden rooms, with a lounge area, comfortable bed, plenty of wardrobe space (including a gun safe), large bathroom with 2-person bath and walk in shower. The only drawback is that one must walk outside to get to the bar and restaurant.
The garden itself is a delight and also provides views across open countryside. The pub has a good selection of ales and serves excellent, reasonably priced meals.
