We had a fantastic time here. Definitely the best place to stay in Matheran because of 2 reasons (i) Far away from the rest of the places (ii) Close to some nice scenic spots including Charlotte Lake. No mobile connectivity, no wi-fi, no distractions and no noise (except for some idiot playing loud bollywood music from one of the other...

If you want absolute peace and solitude come here, if not go elsewhere. Don't get very young children here, cause there are no activities for them to do here. There are no slides, swings in the premises, thankfully.

Home away from home. Stayed here for four nights and loved it. The food, the service, the rooms and the property are all perfect. The staff is super-cordial. They have no TV, almost no network and no-air conditioning (though you don't miss any of these, really).

Positives: nice property, u feel as if u r staying in a mahal; Proximity to Charlotte lake; Negative: food needs a lot of improvement, lunch menu was pathetic, dinner also has limited options and is overpriced but manageable (seriously consider eating at other places instead); staff needs to be more courteous; no landmarks provided on d way to d resort,...

Matheran is easy to get to as long as you like a good walk. A train to Neral from Bombay (try to get a Karjat-fast), then a 20-minute taxi ride to Dasturi (Rs 400 if you book the full taxi), then a good 105-minute walk to that grand colonial villa called The Verandah in the Forest. If you have too...

It's a nice 2 hours walk from the parking area. Located very close to the Echo Point. The hotel is true to its claim, colonial property located amidst the forest and stands isolated. The standard is pretty high and the food (depending on your taste) is also good. Every time I will goto Matheran, It's truly a gem in this...

As far as varanda in the forest hotel is concerned cuts a small...

This was one of the nicest hotels that I have ever had the pleasure of staying in. Fantastic room and very helpful service. The setting in the forest is magical. It is very quiet and peaceful. The food was lovely and the beautiful big dining room table was very sociable - it was good to meet the other guests. It...

Matheran was a very unique experience, and Verandah in the Forest was the perfect accommodation. It is a stunning old colonial property. We had the hidden room out the back and were very happy with the stunning outlook into the forest. My tip - ask for the Indian menu.

Official Description (provided by the hotel)
The paths once cleared by the British in the forests of Matheran, making it the last British hill station have acquired a new identity as the place where Bombay’s movers and shakers which include filmstars and businessmen come to spend a few quiet and peaceful days.Perched atop the Sahyadri ranges, Matheran is Asia’s only pedestrian hill resort. Chug up in a toy train, trot, or arrive in a palanquin, past gigantic mansions built by the British, the Parsis, and the Bohras. The Verandah in the Forest was the second house to be built on the isolated Western Ghats, by Captain Barr. Now, with every facility in place, it is reputed to be second to none! Indeed, the nobility of the proportions of The Verandah bring civilizational honour to the Sahyadri ranges. Lounge like never before in this verandah of your dreams. Read under the highest domestic ceiling you would have known in the salon – 12 metres/35 feet high. Stroll down to Charlotte Lake. Or take longer walks with a picnic basket. Relish the local cuisines. Heave your chest, muscle your calves, take all the oxygen back in your lungs. Link your planet with your own two feet.Find space for more space in your mind. Or lose yourself to find yourself anew.Long after you return, you will wonder who would have dared to sprawl out such a tree-home space in such spell-binding wilderness? ... more   less
