Visited last week and enjoyed their taster menu.
We were greeted by the Chef/Owner, Kevin, asked to check in on the COVID app and offered hand sanitiser. We were the shown to table, asked if we’d like a drink, shown the menu and asked if anything was not to our liking or allergic to.
Kevin’s wife, Jacki, came and said hello and asked about our holiday etc.
Canapés and bread we’re soon bought out and then the menu began.
It was quite simply one of the best meals I’ve ever eaten.
Each course built on the next and without exception were delicious. Kevin definitely knows how to match flavours.
In all we spent a great few hours enjoying the 8 courses, and despite the restaurant being full, never felt rushed nor waited for anything . Both Jacki and Kevin were attentive and friendly throughout and were a large part of making the whole evening a treat.
Whether you go for the a la carte or set menu you won’t regret it.
Thank you both.

My wife treated me to the 7 course taster menu for my birthday and a special treat it was. The restaurant is small and intimate with seating for around 18 people. Both the women serving were excellent, helpful and friendly. The food (except for one course) was top quality and it was a shame that just that one course (a breaded fish), tasted no different to a supermarket packet variety - although it was pleasant enough, but you expect a bit more at a Michelin starred restaurant. The other 6 courses were superb as was the wine and champagne we had. Having said all that, there are 2 Michelin starred restaurants in Norfolk and if you have only to choose one, this is not as good as Morston Hall. £80 for the taster menu.

I booked dinner, B&B at the Neptune for our wedding anniversary, having heard and read so many great things about it. It lived up to everything we expected!
It's a small, unpretentious building that belies what it offers. The dining area is laid out very simply and with only the owners - Kevin and Jacki - in attendance, you could be forgiven for thinking it was a bog-standard B&B. You couldn't be more wrong!
Mein hosts are a really friendly couple who couldn't do more to make your experience as good as possible. And boy, can Kevin cook! Best meal I have had in a long time, and well worthy of its Michelin star.
And the room was just so comfy! Even though it overlooked the main road, it was completely quiet at night.
Thanks you both!

We came here for my fiancé’s 30th birthday, and the experience we had was second to none.
Firstly, the food is excellent. We had the tasting menu and each course was full of flavour, quality ingredients and variety. The menu was beautifully well balanced.
The experience as a whole, with the comfortable and friendly service, was very special. The owners, one of which being the chef himself, tended to our table wonderfully. We immediately felt relaxed and at home, and the two and a bit hours we were there flew by.
I cannot recommend The Neptune highly enough. The whole experience was wonderful.

This is basically not much more than a private house, with a maximum of about 16 covers. (They might be able to squeeze a few more in).
Run by the two owners (husband and wife), he does all the cooking (but still comes to serve food at the table) whilst his wife is front of house.
Both totally delightful, and a pleasure to talk to.
The taster menu was fantastic, imaginative, fun and tasty.
The Chef was very modest and said he thought there were better restaurants in Cambridge than his (but if there are, I have certainly never been to one).
Wine was great as well.
You should go!!

Probably the best meal I’ve ever had. No wonder it’s so difficult to get booked in - but worth the wait. We had the taster menu - all 9 dishes were amazing. The couple who own and run the restaurant were friendly and made us feel most welcome. Very relaxed atmosphere, would 100% recommend and hope to revisit.

Every so often you come across a place which combines great food wonderful atmosphere and excellent service. The Neptune is such a place.
We were staying for the night in wonderfully accommodation at the Neptune. Little details which indicated a wonderful evening to come. The dishes served were excellent with locally sourced food . I will be back soon if I can get a table

The taster menu was excellent, clearly prepared by someone who likes making good quality food taste and look good, we were delighted.
Service and hosting were lovely very individual and attentive. Thanks to Kevin and Jackie who own the B&B and provide the wonderful food.
It was good for the price.
Room was just what was needed.
Great to be so close to the beach and local walks

Just returned from a night's stay at The Neptune. It is expensive but I believe it is good value. The room was elegant and spacious with lovely toiletries and a super comfy bed. Dinner was also elegant. Extremely skilled cooking and unstuffy, efficient service. The halibut main course was my highlight. It smelt and tasted of the sea - deliciously delicate. Breakfast was great,I just hadn't had enough time from dinner to build up a suitable appetite!

The Neptune is a bit of a problem place: so good in parts, so lacking in others.
The immensely likable owners, Kevin and Jacki Mangeolles, moved here a few years ago from a rather larger operation, The George, on the Isle of Wight. Kevin’s cooking had a Michelin star there and he has one here, and that is probably why most people visit The Neptune. His food is textbook one-star Michelin standard so you get dabs of this, smears of that, often served on a slate. The food was perfectly acceptable, some of it delicious, but for me it wasn’t exciting enough, the flavours lacked real punch, the wow factor was missing. It was, though, sensibly priced and the excellent wine list has plenty to chose from in the £20-25 range.
On this chilly, bleak Thursday in February, there were seven diners and three of the hotel rooms were taken. The restaurant itself is smart and welcoming, though the smallness of the room means that most tables are tiny and someone always faces a wall. They describe the decor as ‘New England,’ which means white paint, a bit of clapboard and framed seasidey photos. There is also a pleasant lounge bar with a roaring gas fire, wicker tables and chairs. It’s decidedly pretty, as I hope my photos show.
There are seven rooms upstairs and ours was Number One, above the archway which might have made it colder than the others. The building is old, so floors and doors lean every which way but I wouldn’t really call it creaky-characterful. I’m afraid it’s often more grotty and the white-out colour scheme only accentuates that: you couldn’t avoid noticing the broken radiator and the terrible condition of the sash cord window. The amenities are fine and the shower worked but it’s not that much above old-school boozer accommodation and I’m not entirely sure if that is what a Michelin clientele wants. Compare this to the rooms at gastropubs like The Olive Branch at Clipsham (qv) and and you see how the Neptune falls way below those standards. We sort of expected this and were prepared for it, though I could never spend more than a night here and in the summer I’d drive the 50 miles home rather than be that cramped again. However, like the restaurant, the rooms are priced fairly: we got the room, a smashing breakfast and dinner for £160 for two which is excellent value.
The Neptune is right on the A149 which goes up from King’s Lynn and on around the Norfolk coast which isn’t so “undiscovered” these days. So there is traffic noise and the hotel is not double-glazed. There isn’t a garden to sit out in - a big drawback in summer, I imagine - and you are a ten-minute walk from the sea. The village has an interesting mix of houses, a couple of hotels, a lovely church and open farmland. It’s also a world class area for migrating birds and there are fabulous beach walks. Hunstanton itself is cheap and cheerful.
Jacki Margeolles said they both absolutely loved it there. For their sake I hope there are enough people interested in their high-end food and can accept their rather low-end aspects. To summarise then: right owners, right ideas, right food, maybe the wrong building.
