Strattons Hotel is a family run hotel situated within a beautiful Palladian listed building in the market town of Swaffham in the Norfolk Brecks. Stay in one of the 10 individual, sumptuous eclectic bedrooms and suites; maybe a carved four-poster bed; an open fire; a freestanding bath at the foot of the bed with room for two; a roll top bath; a mermaid mosaic; a cow hide or two; antiques and art; contemporary cool; original period features; a huge private decked balcony or a cinema screen. The hotel is a blend of comfort with beautiful things collected and loved over the years by owners Les & Vanessa Scott. An environment that is glamorous, yet we hope will put people immediately at ease. We offer rooms only and no food but we are in the centre of the small market town of Swaffham with a good selection of places to eat and shop for food. All the rooms are equipped with fridges for food purchases and we can provide a continental breakfast with 24 hours notice. There is no evening restaurant.

A stunning part Georgian, part Victorian villa in the middle of Swaffham, this property has been lovingly converted into an exquisite and attractive small hotel, with pretty individually-decorated rooms, a chic café/restaurant, and slick and friendly service. They have coped well with recent social distancing and hygiene requirements, and we felt relaxed and able to enjoy our stay to the maximum as a result. We stayed in the Red Room, which was sumptuous, with carved and curtained four-poster, large sitting area with grand sofas and numerous chairs, and a modern bathroom. Breakfast was plentiful, with cereals and a selection of hot dishes. From the dinner menu, we can recommend the monkfish curry and pork dishes, and the delicious chocolate brownie. The staff are delightful and attentive. A memorable stay!

Thank you so much for your lovely very detailed feedback about a recent stay at Strattons in the Red Room. We love the historical building and its architecture. During 1942 it was designated as an emergency feeding station in the event of invasion by the Swaffham Urban District Council Invasion Committee. I love its connection with feeding people and its value to the town albeit tucked away and missed by anyone just driving through. We hope to see you again. Very best regards Vanessa and the team at Strattons

Arrived at Stratton’s for a three-night midweek stay. Got parked ok. Receptionist was very professional and gave us confidence of a good stay at a well-run hotel. Our room was the Red Room, this was spacious, and we were very impressed by the décor, bathroom and room fittings. There was a mini bar/fridge which we found useful to put our own drinks for days out. There was a half-bottle of wine and two glasses – but we were not sure if this was complimentary or not. The hotel was quiet, and we had no trouble sleeping as other guests seemed very considerate. After a few days in the room we found it to be a bit dark, the all red décor looked great but on overcast days it was very difficult to see the content of a suitcase or read as the lights were quite dim. I’s no interior designer but maybe the ceiling could be painted gold just to reflect more light back down into the room. The bathroom, bath and shower were great, clean and bright. Breakfast was included as was ok, I’m not sure if this was limited by covid but we had limited selection of things, there was no orange juice for the three days which was strange – when we asked we were told they had run out, umm considering there are loads of shops and supermarkets just round the corner. The breakfast orders were mixed up on our first and second mornings (Tue and Wed) and the girl serving didn’t seem very focussed and was a bit rude when we returned a plate of raw scrambled eggs on soggy toast. Breakfast on the Thursday was miles better, it was like the staff were the ‘A’ Team, a blonde girl and man were brilliant, the breakfast was better, and we were much happier. Just to mention the lovely girl on reception , she helped me when I had trouble parking and helped with a faulty radiator, she was SO Helpful and considerate a real credit to Strattons !!, thank you

Dear Mralchemy thank you so much for leaving your feedback regarding a recent stay at Strattons. Your comments are very useful and helps to inform improvements, possible change and staff training. I thought it would be valuable to comment on our breakfast offering as you mention it here. We can no longer offer a breakfast buffet because of the regulations regarding Covid and minimising food exposed to multiple people. We do however still offer a table service of local Granola, GF Corn flakes and children's cereals along with porridge. Also via table service is fresh fruit, poached winter fruits and apple and pear juice from a local farm which are excellent quality and offer dry, sweet and medium apple styles. We juice oranges, but just as English-grown strawberries are at their best between May and July, oranges will be sweeter and juicier depending on where they are grown at certain times of the year. Accordingly we buy oranges to juice on site as guided by our greengrocer which is generally the autum and winter months. We simply do not buy cartons for breakfast. I apologise that this was not conveyed to you as it absolutely should have been. So glad that Zoe, Les and the reception team helped your stay be a positive experience. The earlier part of the year was traumatic and we have put in place procedures to keep guests safe whist trying to stick to our green principles, support local businesses and enjoy the lovely visitors who pass through our doors. Best regards and thank you for choosing Strattons, Vanessa and the team

The best thing about Strattons is the staff. They were all a delight, very friendly and happy to help with anything. The hotel (excluding it's lovely exterior) is tired - don't be deceived by the beautiful room photography on the website! I was so excited to stay here for three nights as a staycation in lieu of a foreign holiday this year. Sadly the rooms are a bit shabby, there's no housekeeping (due to Covid) so anything you may want has to be requested at reception, e.g. fresh towels, fresh coffee mugs, an extra blanket... you also have to pay upfront for your room which is a bit odd. The food in the restaurant is not good and as there are so many great pubs nearby I wouldn't recommend eating in Cocoe's and instead book elsewhere. The breakfast was nice enough! Essentially I thought it was overpriced, trying to be 'The Pig' but missing wildly. With a bit of a extra thought, e.g. a radio in each room, a box of tissues, some robes and slippers, some nice products... it could be a lot better. I'm sorry to write a negative review but I hope that this can at least be constructive for the owners as it could be really great.

Dear Betty A we were so sorry to hear that your foreign holiday had been postponed. It's been such a challenging year and we all understand the value of breaks after the lockdown earlier in the year. We send out emails prior to all guests arrival to outline our Covid Risk Assessment terms and how it impacts on guests. It is vital we keep all guests, staff and suppliers safe. Room servicing is available via reception. Some guests emphatically do not want staff entering their room during the stay and we have to respect and understand that. Equally we have to keep our staff safe so there are guidelines around a stay with us as there are with all hotels in the UK who have signed up to the Visit England 'Good to Go' quality industry standard. These are challenging times and we are not happy with how it has impacted on our 'normal' service but foremost in our hearts and minds is the safety of all on our site. If it spoilt your stay we are genuinely sorry. We have been open since 1990 and can absolutely confirm we are not trying to emulate any other hotel. Since then we have operated to a comprehensive environmental management system. This means we do not provide the tissues, cotton wool, slippers and robes that we associate with poor environmental performance. We do provide good organic, local toiletries that are made to a very strict brief and 97% of our waste is recycled. We purchase good local food, organic where ever possible and collect all the surface water from the site for reuse. We have radio facilities in all our rooms via the TV's. There are lots of other actions which are part of a system to minimise our impact on the environment. I think it also important to point out that we operate from a Grade 11 listed building and we cannot remove 18th century plasterwork as we are not allowed to and we love the patina anyway. NB the breakfast is cooked by the same team who cook throughout the day and evening. It's a shame you didn't try our dinner menu but we appreciate the menu is not to everyones taste. Best regards Vanessa and the team at Strattons

We booked this hotel after visiting the onsite restaurant a year ago, and we were not disappointed. This hotel is stunning in every way. From the warm and friendly welcome we received to the personal service of escorting us to our room, the food, the staff, the grounds and the setting, we couldn't have asked for more.

Our room was based outside of the main hotel building which wasn't an issue at all.   The room was perfect, the bathroom large with all modern amenities. The small things made a huge difference, like free milk in the fridge to enjoy a coffee in the room (the coffee was fresh! None of the instant packet stuff) The room had a large comfortable bed and freezing area. It also came with iron and ironing board and plenty of hangers, something which some chain hotels don't provide without asking.

The breakfast was amazing. Fresh locally sourced food which can be eaten in the restaurant or delivered to your room, which is the option we chose.

I would definitely recommend staying here. It is one of the highest priced hotels in Swaffham, but you pay for what you get.

We are looking to return in July for a friends 40th, so I know we will be booking the hotel again!

This hotel is not really as represented online and in the description, and I would not call it luxury in the least. Low quality tea bags & packets of weak Lyons coffee. The outdoor chairs are very uncomfortable. The reception staff were very pleasant and friendly but there are certain things that matter for a hotel to provide a reasonable standard. I think they need to rethink all of this. Also their half- bottle of ordinary Chilean wine in the minibar is £15. I think in searching for a way to enjoy the stay, guests may be tempted to have drinks from the minibar to compensate for a lack in other areas. The room backs onto an alley with a Kebab shop behind it which closes late.

I wanted to love this hotel - it was our first night away for quite a while. The buildings look beautiful online, I was excited about the food and had a wonderful chat with reception on booking.

Unfortunately there were lots of little things that left the stay rather flat. The grounds are pretty, but in need of a good weed. The room was fine, however the grout rather dirty in the bathroom, the blinds are not black out so it was very light in the morning and there was no hairdryer.

The shop and deli are shut due to staffing levels, so could not be enjoyed. The food was ok, but not great considering the prices. The pastry on the salmon tart was dry and the kedgeree was not as fresh as hoped.

The hotel recognised the issues. They cleaned the grout, offered to put up blackout blinds and bought a hair dryer to the room. I did not want to overshadow the evening by mentioning the pastry on Saturday night so left it. We were on a quick timeline in the morning so rang later to mention the kedgeree. The hotel felt we should have said something at the time, however we would not have had time to wait for a second meal to be cooked had we been offered it so chose ring to give feedback once the reception was open.

The hotel offered a £50 voucher to be used off another stay. I think however there were too many little things that added up to a disappointing stay, to visit at the hotel again.

I would chose the Dabbling Duck or Hill Farm Massingham which we have had wonderful experiences in.

Stayed over one night as we cycled around Norfolk (hotel were able to store bikes securely for us overnight). What an impressive approach to the hotel - you come down the little alleyway and it is a beautiful sight as it opens out into the sunny courtyard and beautiful building in front of you. Really nice to sit out ther, close to tye busy town but completely peaceful. Staff were super friendly and helpful and the rooms were an absolute treat- each one different and quirky, whilst being very comfortable. Having proper milk in the fridge for tea making rather than UHT sachets was particularly appreciated!

COVID guidelines well explained and the hotel is small - we didnt ever need to go within 2 metres of other guests anyway.

I feel very fortunate that hard working small businesses have weathered the COVID closures and responded so quickly and so well to the rapidly changing times, so that we could have a little bit of luxury after a stressful 6 months!

We booked Strattons for our first night away from the kids since lockdown. Unfortunately our childcarer fell ill and applied for a COVID test. As responsible citizens we called Strattons to move our booking and not put others at risk. They refused to move our booking or offer a refund. The manager was extremely unhelpful and unaccommodating. I wrote a formal email of complaint and have still not heard anything.

We are unable to claim on our travel insurance too.

Be really careful booking this hotel at this time. Their cancellation policy is unreasonably strict and I would say even encourages people to stay even if they suspect COVID. Take care!

In line with the industry standards we do charge cancellation fees on bookings cancelled at the last minute and we confirm all bookings with our Terms and Conditions. We also suggest guests take out travel insurance if at all concerned about their booking although this would be a seperate agreement with an insurance company not ourselves. It is always frustrating if someone cannot make a booking for both parties concerned. Regarding Covid19 we have undertaken an extensive risk assessment, addressing staff, guests and suppliers safety on our site. We take this issue very seriously and respect individuals requirements regarding the virus threat for example 'vulnerable' people. As well as our terms and conditions we send out info to guests prior to a stay regarding our Covid19 safety policy. Rest assured we want you to feel safe and relaxed.

My husband and I had a wonderful time staying for 1 night at Strattons. The hotel and bedrooms are really quirky and whilst they totally respected all the Covid guidelines, it didn’t feel weird.
The staff were all super helpful and cheerful and the food in Cocoes was really delicious.
Really would recommend the hotel for a lovely stay.

Dear Countrybumkin80 thank you so much for your lovely review and so pleased you enjoyed your stay at Strattons. It seemed so sad when we were closed down although totally understandable. It has been a challenge to re-open, provide as much choice as possible and keep staff, visitors and our suppliers safe whilst visiting. The food we create uses ingredients provided by local businesses and growers in line with our green philosophy. The bacon and sausages in our breakfast and sausage rolls comes from a small farmer who rears the rare breed Large Black Pigs at nearby Oxborough for example. Hope to see you again, have a good autumn, Vanessa and the team at Strattons

Spent our wedding anniversary at this hotel and absolutely loved it. A warm welcome, friendly staff and beautiful grounds. We stayed in the Venetian Room; it had a great aspect looking out onto the front lawn. (to the left of the staircase in the photo). We ate in Co-coes,the restaurant and the food was superb: I had fillet steak and my wife monkfish curry. The Tiramisu was delicious and the service by the lovely Zoe warm, and friendly. A lovely evening. Breakfast next morning with all Norfolk sourced food was easily the equal of, if not better than several of the five star hotels we have stayed at in London. A great Anniversary stay. Totally Covid safe.Thank you

Not sure about Sat Nav. When coming from Castle Acre side into Swaffham, you go past waitrose and tesco on right. 200 mtrs after Tesco turn right at traffic lights, about 100 mts on right there is an alleyway between the shops directly opposite a small car park. The hotel is at the end of the alleyway. This alleyway is wide enough for a car. Very strange location fir a hotel
