Detailed Reviews
The Crown and Sceptre has opened again after being closed for a few months. I visited for a drink and met the new proprietors. Favourably impressed and good range of beers. Opening restaurant with Sunday carvery. Now have 4 ensuite rooms. I will visit again and check out and report further.

My wife and I had a meal at The Crown & Sceptre last week and it was excellent. The food is all home made and the ingredients sourced locally. It is typical pub grub but of a very high standard and all reasonably priced.
The Crown & Sceptre has had a few landlords in the past 2 years and with them different chefs. The latest tenants are welcoming and the atmosphere in the pub is warm and friendly. We are looking forward to another meal there before Christmas.

I booked a room here through Trip Adviser (via Expedia) but unfortunately there was some sort of glitch and there was no reservation for us when we arrived. I gave feedback to Expedia pointing this out ( but not blaming the pub as I don't know whose fault it was) and I received this back from the pub manager. I have had to remove a word that is too vulgar for Trip Advisor to be able to publish.
"Had no email regarding your booking sorry you never confirmed booking re phone call as someone with half intelligence would have gone on web site and rang, you [swear word removed} idiot"
I did try to contact the pub before arriving but the email address on their website is incorrect....not very good start really.
This rudeness and vulgarity is totally uncalled for and I am glad that we didn't stay. I still don't know where the fault was but it is clear that this person at The Crown and Sceptre should simply not be working in the hospitality industry.

Was very disappointed from the start. Arrived on Wednesday 21/10 to check in at 5pm only to find it was locked up until the owner Nigel arrived at 17.20. No apology was given only an excuse that the traffic was heavy. Our room no 2, was extremely small for a double, whilst there was a large built in wardrobe the only drawers available were in a small bedside unit. In the bathroom there was no toilet roll holder, no where to hang towels and hardly room to sit on the toilet. On Thursday as it was my birthday we decided to have a meal at the hotel as it was suppose to be 'home cooked'. We ordered the Hunters chicken and Fish pie - at a cost of £9.50 each. The fish pie was the worst my wife had ever tasted. Too much lumpy mashed potato, not enough fish which had no sauce and a topping lid of puff pastry - no cheese in sight!!!! Lisa who stated she was responsible for the meal that night sat down with us after and asked if we enjoyed our meal, when my wife offered advice on how a fish pie should be she admitted she did not know how to cook one. The following morning at breakfast when I asked for toast was told by Lisa "would a crust be ok as Nigel had not got in enough white bread and there was only brown". Poached egg was not an option on the menu as cooking one would be difficult!!! We decided to leave early the following day and on paying my bill my wife mentioned to Nigel about the Fish Pie and how he could charge that much for it and he just said "he would speak to his cook on Tuesday". In the bar there is displayed a TripAdvisor Excellence Award - I think this would probably apply to the previous landlords/landladies as Nigel has only been running the hotel for the last 3 months. This is the first time we have had need to make a review in connection with our holidays.

We do have a larger room - our family room - which cost extra, perhaps for your birthday you should have booked this one? Note we are a B&B at competitive B&B accommodation prices and not a hotel. The fish pie has been served to other customers who have been delighted with it, we are sorry it did not meet your expectations. Please note the standard breakfast has the options of boiled, scrambled or fried eggs. Please be advised that the TripAdvisor award applies to the current management.

Myself and a few friends went here on Saturday afternoon for food, the first thing that was a highlight to why are we in here was the guy behind the bar didn't have a clue where to get water from! Then we waited around 45 minutes for very simple meals, Scampi and chips and gammon and chips! Then when I asked for another drink it never arrived and when I went up to pay the bill I was greeted with "oh you wanted a coke didn't you?" Yes mate I did but that was half an hour ago! I would have given it 1 star but the food was really good! Probably had 3 attempts at cooking the food considering the wait we had....

Another pub saved, thanks to a man with vision. Under new management usually means under new manager but owned by the same company, not this time.
New owner (not manager) yes new owner Nigel has taken a career changing decision to bring this pub back to life, and he is succeeding. We took a last minute trip to Bromyard to join folk music fans at the annual Bromyard Folk festival.
We received a super welcome, shown to a very clean room, with the usual kettle & bottled water ready prepared. We asked for fresh milk and were promptly served.
The view from the window of the Bromyard Downs was stunning, and the the terrace the ideal resting place to sample the many real ales on offer.
Breakfast was served by Nigel, so we took the opportunity to interrogate him about his move from the urban sprawl of Manchester to the country life of Herefordshire, and to learn of his vision for this lovely old pub.
Nigel and his staff have already breathed new life into this pub, we look forward to returning next year.

Turned up late 8.45pm after a very long day, in truth, first place i came to in Bromyard but what a really nice little find...
Joanne and Stewart made me very welcome, let me pick my room, turned the heating up and made some me some good hot food
Following few drinks and a chat with a few locals, i retired for a very good nights sleeps..
What i did find out and important to note, do not take any notice of review before Christmas, they have only just taken over the place and are working really hard to build it up.
Breakfast was superb and if you have a car make sure you call in advance to book your very own parking space.
Thank you and good luck for the future.

We stayed one night in room 4 - it is a gorgeous room and we had a good nights sleep. The room and pub is exceptionally clean. We had a 3 course evening meal and breakfast - all of which was delicious. Stuart and Jo are great hosts and made us very welcome. Definitely recommend this place and we hope to visit again.
