Porch House in Northallerton was built in 1584 and is the oldest house in the town. And if you stay here you are following in the footsteps of Royal history as King Charles 1 stayed here twice; once as a guest in 1640 and then as a prisoner in 1647 while being taken back to London for his eventual execution.

As we live just down the road in Knaresborough we visit Northallerton regularly and have often admired this house and wondered what the interior would be like. Having booked a B&B here we were able to find out, and it is just as charming as we expected. It also has secure private parking behind the cottage, which is always a bonus in Northallerton.

We were warmly greeted on arrival and shown to our lovely room on the first floor. The room (no 2) is at the rear of the house and overlooks the attractive walled garden. It is beautifully decorated in appropriate cottage style and is roomy and very comfortable. The en-suite is also very nice and comes with good quality toiletries, big fluffy towels and a fabulous shower.

It is clear that considerable thought has been put into the comfort of visitors and all the supplied toiletries, towels, bedding etc are top class, and the thoughtful little extras included a bowl of fresh fruit, home made biscuits, a little bag of chocolates, fresh milk and very good quality coffee and tea.

Breakfast is served in a charming room with beamed ceiling and an old range cooker against the wall. After enjoying a fine selection of fresh fruits and yogurt, we both had the full Yorkshire breakfast which was sheer perfection on a plate. It was made with top quality local ingredients that were perfectly cooked and nicely presented - my three simple but golden rules for a cooked breakfast.

We spent two very enjoyable days here and, quite simply, this is as good as it gets, whether you are talking about B&Bs or top hotels, and we look forward to coming back.

Christine and Charles could not have made us feel more welcome during our weekend at the historic Porch House. Their attention to detail is outstanding and the room contained many thoughtful little extras which hugely added to the comfort of our stay. From robes and slippers to fresh milk in the fridge for our morning tea, they'd thought of everything. Their central location directly opposite Northallerton church was perfect and the secure parking behind the house enabled us to leave the car and forget it for 48 hours.

We stayed in the King Charles room and enjoyed the ancient beams and floorboards.

Highly recommended.

Mine was a two night stay and I wish it could have been longer. The warm welcome was extended to the room with a bowl of fresh fruit and fresh milk. I slept very well it a comfortable bed with wonderfully soft pillows. It was no wonder King Charles stayed here twice! This is a house with history and this has been retained but not at the expensive of modern conveniences.

What can I say that others have not already said. The house is beautiful. It is old and of course this means that the rooms have to fit the space available, but having been shown them all they are all lovely and all have their own character. Porch House is in the centre of Northallerton so perfect for bars, restaurants and the excellent Everyman cinema. The room I was in was dominated by a big and very comfortable bed, with a large and modern bathroom. Notwithstanding being on the road side of the house it was not noisy and it is of course charming to stay in a room where Charles I also stayed. The two things that really make Porch House a wonderful place to stay are firstly the owners and secondly the little additional touches. Christine and Charles are the people the phrase 'They could not do enough' was invented for. They told me that they want to make Porch House the type of place they would like to stay in and they succeed in not only doing that but making it the type of place I like to stay in. They have a long history in the hotel and food and beverage business and know what they are doing.
They are warm, friendly and efficient. Breakfast, continental and hot, cooked to order is immense, both in quality and size. They serve great coffee and fresh and I do mean fresh orange juice. They put chocolates in the room every night as well as a fruit bowl, biscuits and fresh milk for tea and coffee in a little fridge in the cupboard. There was a hot water bottle in my room which was much appreciated when I got in from -6 degree temperatures outside. I whole-heartedly recommend Porch House and when I am back working in Northallerton again I will most definitely stay there.

We stayed in this b&b for two nights in September 2021. Charles and Christine were the perfect hosts of this fascinating hostelry with a very long history. We had the twin room overlooking the garden which was decorated beautifully and the little touches like the toiletries, fruit and chocoates made it very special. The breakfasts were absolutely delicious, excellently prepared by Charles and served by Christine. As my partner is gluten free they had gone out of their way to cater for her and they had even put home made gluten free biscuits in our room, very thoughtful. Its little touches like that that makes a good b&b stand out. Also, there was plenty of parking space at the rear. All in all, an excellent stay and we shall definitely return.

Stayed at the Porch House for one night on 17 February 2020. The owners Charles and Christine were both excellent hosts who could not do enough for you The room was very clean with quality products available, the location was excellent. When we arrived. We dumped our case in the room and was asked if we would like a tea or coffee but delayed until until later in the afternoon. The accompanying cakes were all top drawer we had a choice of three varieties each! The breakfast was first class and could not be faulted. I would highly recommend this and would rate it as ten out of ten. Well done Charles and Christine and I hope Charles enjoyed his Birthday. Many thanks

We stayed in Porch House for 3 nights during a recent trip to Yorkshire, and our group of 3 used the four poster and King Charles rooms. This is one of the very best B&Bs I have stayed at - the attention to detail is really over and above what is normally provided, and the hosts have gone out of their way to think about what their guests might need. We feasted on the fruit and choc bowl, cookies and bottled water, made use of the fridge in the room with fresh milk, appreciated the proper hairdryer, bathrobes and the powerful shower, and enjoyed the lovely furnishings and decor throughout. Breakfast was really lovely - and again, attention to detail was demonstrated through the use of local produce and home made preserves. We used the guest sitting room on a couple of occasions, and also sat out in the lovely garden, where Christine kindly provided seat pads and table cloth for us to enjoy our wine and nibbles. Charles and Christine were the perfect hosts. I hope we have the chance to visit again.

From the minute you arrive you are treated like family and a VIP all in one. Fantastic characterful accommodation, we had the massive four-poster which was so comfy and with so many extras like chocolates, home-made biscuits, fruit bowl, wow! The bed mattress was very high off the ground I felt I had a bit-part in a period drama. Breakfast is superb with full Yorkshire with local produce, plus other options including smoked salmon. I cannot praise this place enough, Christine and Charles are fantastic.

Porch House is an amazing B&B and is very highly recommended. The standards and attention to detail given by the owners is exemplary. Yes it is an old building with furniture and decor to match and it works perfectly. The tea/coffee and homemade cake on arrival were a welcome surprise (and the cake delicious), the room was immaculately clean, the breakfast made with the freshest products, the additional treats in the room were a real surprise and much appreciated. It's located in a great place with free on-site parking and is ideal for walking into town for the shops and pubs or restaurants. The owners Charles and Christine are extremely polite and helpful, and go out of their way to ensure guests are happy with their stay at Porch House - thank you both and we would definitely stay again when in the area.

Location, comfort, cleanliness, attention to detail in this fabulous old building. The hosts are welcoming & happy to share the history of the house & show you around the other rooms if possible. They all have a unique individual charm.
Beautiful lounge, with tea/coffee/cake offered upon arrival.
We stayed in the King Charles room at the front of the property. Lovely touches like home-made biscuits, fruit, chocolates & fresh milk in the fridge.
Be warned, the bed sits high off the floor, but it is large & comfortable.
A fairly small room, & as we are finding in many of our b&b stays there is little room for large suitcases.
The bathroom is spacious & well-appointed with a fabulous shower.
Breakfast was simply devine with lots of choices.
Private on-site, off road parking too.
So glad we chose this place.
