The quality of food and menus at the Frenchgate reflect the passion and enthusiasm of the staff. Care is taken to source ingredients locally wherever possible and all our food is all prepared to order. Start with a selection of homemade breads, starters of hand dived scallops, Whitby white crab or carpaccio of local beef, then maybe a loin of Yorkshire lamb together with a confit of shoulder, a fillet of pan roasted halibut cooked to perfection, local game or one of our delicious vegetarian options. Our bar and wine lists match the quality and value of our food. Choose from our superb house recommendations or unique “wine flight” to classic and unusual new world offerings. As well as a range of fine spirits and liqueurs befitting the independent and non corporate feel of The Frenchgate, you can also enjoy a range of both local bottle conditioned ales, and imported beers from around the world.

Detailed Reviews
We checked out the hotel on Booking, com and Trip Advisor and neither pointed out that the restaurant has been closed for dinner for 3 years, although both show good reviews for the non-existent food. Breakfast is served and was very good. The Frenchgate Restaurant & Hotel website does mention no dinner but its been phrased like it was just coming out of covid and that all would be well soon.
We actually booked with the owners and it was only when I phoned back and asked about reserving a table did David say that it was shut but he did provide a good map of other restaurants which, to be fair, were very local and good.
The hotel itself is in a good location but showing its age which considering that the cottage we were in was dated from about 1650 can't be too harshly criticised. Tv channels need updating and WiFi non existent in the room.
Comfortable and clean but wouldn't book again.

From booking or rather looking into booking this hotel, David has been a delight and most helpful throughout the pandemic changes! My partner and I finally visited in April 2022 and it was well worth the wait! David was there to welcome us - we felt like we knew each other after many email exchanges over 2 years! All of the staff we encountered were friendly and efficient and knowledgeable of the hotel, including it's history and the area itself. The location is perfect and parking onsite saves any hassle with your trip. The room itself was clean, comfortable and had everything we needed. So many places to visit on the doorstep, we really needed more than 2 days! On booking we received some recommendations for dinner reservations and took advantage of this local knowledge and we were not disappointed. We will definitely be back at some time in the near future and have already recommended this hotel to friends.
Thanks again David and team.

We stayed in the Mousey Thompson suite (Bridal suite) during my stay and I have to say the actual bedroom part of the suite was gorgeous.
The staff in the hotel were warm and welcoming and as it was our Wedding Dave the owner threw in a complementary bottle of wine – which was lovely..
The breakfasts were lovely (best scrambled eggs I have ever had) …
My only negative – was the bathroom in the suite. It was very small with no room / space to put anything. The shower on the face of it looked big and was certainly modern, however the shower head was fixed pointing in a way that meant you had to be flat up against the shower glass like a Garfield cat.. It was not very good and certainly did not provide an effective or relaxing shower. The room slopes and therefore the side shower door did not reach fully across – so I can see why they did it – but at £275 a night I want a decent shower… I think the room would benefit from removing the “bidet” which just takes up space (thought these went out of date ages ago) and move the shower down so you can have an adjustable shower head to accommodate your needs.
The only positive for the bathroom was the heated floor tiles – which I have to admit was very nice

On a recent tour of Yorkshire this was our last stop and the poorest quality experience and least value for money of the three hotels we stayed in on this trip. Given other guest reviews we were very disappointed with our experience on our stay.
Our room in the 'annex' was cramped, tired and very dingy (very poor lighting and lo ceilings) and certainly not of a 4 star rating? While there was as stated ensuite facilities the bathroom had very low ceilings felt damp and had a bath but no shower.
The breakfast served in the main hotel dining room was of a high quality with good choice and the breakfast service was fast and efficient.

Richmond is lovely, Frenchgate is a very nice street with beautiful houses, the hotel is in one of them and our room was a pretty high standard, a very large comfortable bed, a nice big shower, but it was expensive so this was sort of thing we were expecting. David, the owner, welcomed us and showed us the room. All good so far, we went out in the evening, and my wife took a shower before bed, everything worked fine. In the morning I tried to have a shower but when I turned the knob nothing happened, I turned it this way and that using no more force than was necessary to turn a tap but it did nothing. I told David when we went down to breakfast and he came to look, 'It's been broken' he said, 'it's been forced the wrong way'. I was silent as I couldn't quite believe he was blaming me. When we checked out I asked if he would consider giving a slight reduction in the bill as we had been unable to shower in the morning. He then became angry and said I was lucky he was not going to charge me for the cost of replacing the tap. I insisted I had done nothing wrong, merely tried to turn the shower on in the normal way. He wouldn't have it and said I had obviously broken it. At this point he was getting very cross and had raised his voice and was standing quite close to me in a threatening manner. If you read some of the bad reviews you will find another where a guest was accused of breaking a shower. I have never experienced this sort of behaviour from anyone in a hotel before, it is really reminiscent of Basil Faulty, but without the laughs. I sincerely hope I never have to speak to this ghastly man again.

Stayed for 2 nights in room 6. Room was a good size with a very large and comfortable bed. The hotel is situated near the centre and has good parking. The breakfast is superb with good quality and options and very well presented. We paid ÂŁ157 per night which feels overly expensive even given current costs. David the owner is very friendly, talkative and quite a character. The big test is would we stay again and that would be a yes. Overall a good hotel.

This little hotel is charming and well suited to the village of Richmond. A hearty English or American breakfast is served each morning, along with smaller options. The food and happy service is excellent. A lovely garden in the back filled with flowers and bird calls each evening tops off a day wandering castle and abbey ruins or exploring the nearby market square. Cocktails in the garden anyone? David Todd, Proprietor, is the man that makes this hotel really stand out. He is funny, kind and generous with his knowledge of the village and his excellent martinis! It is a small property, but abundant with personal comforts. I highly recommend Frenchgate!

We stayed for 1 night in Room 8 Tokyo and found the hotel to be excellent. Liked the ceiling fan over the bed as we stayed during a heatwave and the mood lighting in the bathroom was a nice touch. Everything was clean and the staff very welcoming and friendly. Very good choice for breakfast. The small car park at the back was very useful as parking in Richmond can be a problem but we were able to check in early and leave the car there.

We had room Nr.1, the biggest rip off we ever had in GB. A damp small room, with just one nightstand and one reading lamp. When we opened the little closet, a cloud of dust cane out. There was mold in the bathroom and under the bedroom window. The TV does not have any BBC. The hotel, according to there website, has free Wi-Fi, but it died not reach this room. We talked to the owner about this, he was not sorry at all, he said ”you should have send a special request. Booking.com makes mistakes all the time.” Well we travel a lot and never ever had that problem, when the hotel had wifi, it’s everywhere. The WiFi in the main house is poor as well. All this for a good 155 pound. I call this rude. It is at a cobbled street, you feel every car driving by as if it were in your room. The beds are comfy though. The breakfasts is good.

Now the restaurant is closed this is little more than a large B&B. Breakfast is great, the staff very nice and helpful and the place clean. though strangely none of the staff wore covid masks, the only hotel on our recent trip that didnt.
The worst part is the crazily designed room (number 7) . Firstly a raised platform needs negotiating to get into the bathroom, a huge trip hazed (I still have the bruise on my arm when I forgot and nearly fell over). The blue warning lights didnt switch off the first nigh, so hard to sleep. Then secondly a quarter of the room (not in the rather small bathroom) is taken up with a strangely shaped bath. Stupid position and totally non functional (no extractor fan in the room and its hot enough already without the steaming up from a hot bath). Whoever thought this was a good idea should think again and take it out.
Bed is v large and comfortable but generally the room is too hot on a coolish night even with the window open. Wifi hardly ever works, and he shower is not good for ladies who don't want their hair wet, as no hand shower is provided as is usual with the over head ones. Water pressure too could be better in both the shower and filling the loo. Strangely no glass provided by the sink. No safe if a 4 star hotel room v strange these days,
The lighting in the room is awful, you can hardly see to read. Way too many cushions on the bed, nowhere to put them at night unless that's what the bath is for. This place was sadly not for us, well worth avoiding.
