Welcome! Harriet's House was built around 1878 by John and Edna Esselbach becoming one of the first residences on the Island. The house still stands today in remodeled form. In 2002, Denny and Linda Rectenwald purchased the property and named it Harriet's House after the owner Harriet Tanchon. Customers have been returning year after year with the Barlows being the only group that has never missed a summer with us in 13 years. Although the ladies from Michigan and Ohio are a close second, you know who you are! Due to continual expansion, we have become know as the "Village Within The Village". Our facilities can accommodate two guests in the lodge rooms or bungalows, six visitors in the island suites and up to ten vacationers in our town houses or original house. If you are planning a reunion, birthday party, bachelorette celebration or an anniversary observance, we can house a total of 90 guests within one block of downtown Put-In-Bay.

This is the most charming room! The bed is super comfy. The room is quiet and SO clean. The kitchenette is very handy. When you are in the room, you feel like you are in the secluded bedroom of a big ol' family house! The hosts are cordial and prompt to respond to inquiries.

My cousin and I went to Put-in-bay on a whim and didn't reserve a place. We looked around for a while before we came to Harriet's. She showed us 2 rooms 1 underground and 1 suite that were available. We opted for the suite. We also got a golf cart for what had to be the most reasonable price on the island. The room and cart were clean and comfortable. Very satisfied and will definitely be back 😁 Thank You Harriet's House for the stay and hospitality!

Our only regret during our stay at Harriet's House was that we were unable to enjoy our beautiful room more during our one night stay. We had a suite with two queen beds, full refrigerator, microwave, large double sink area. This property was just steps away from the blocks of bars & restaurants of Put-In-Bay. The staff we encountered were accommodating & friendly. There were posted rules & requests - strip beds prior to departure, quiet hours, etc., but nothing that was intrusive or unreasonable.

I am only giving a one star because I cannot give a zero. Please do not stay at this establishment unless you want to be treated like a teenager. We were a group of 50 year old women and were told we had been breaking their rules since our arrival on the first day. We had two visitors in our room for less then an hour to have a drink while they were waiting for us to get ready. They are very intrusive and monitor everyone's comings and goings. We had to change our own sheets the morning we did request clean sheets even though we paid $333 a night for our room. We asked for our floor to be swept because of sand and they brought us a broom and we swept our own floor. You had to turn in any dirty towels to get clean ones and then at the end they charged me $50 for damaged towels because there was make-up stains on the towels. They absolutely ruined our stay with their disrespectful treatment of us.

I came to the island with a confirmed reservation through Expedia. Came to check in and they told me my Amex was not accepted there. I had let the last ferry leave already. Now I'm trapped on the island with no where to stay. Spoke with the owner. She could not have cared less about my situation. She was out having fun and couldn't even be bothered to come speak with me in person. I will never be back here. Hopefully no one else is subject to this b.s.
The owner is a joke of a business owner.

We stay here every year on Memorial Day Weekend, and somehow it gets better all the time! After not getting here last year because of Covid and this past Friday because of bad weather on the lake, we finally made it on Saturday! Spent an extra night, so lucky they had a room that they seamlessly swapped us to for both of our nights. This property is clean, comfortable, and quiet. Yet, it is steps from all restaurants and bars. Best place to stay on the island!

LOVE HARRIETS HOUSE! The basement bungalow is the perfect size for a couples getaway. The bathroom was bigger than I expected, and the whole place was very clean. Friendly staff, easy check in and out, and so close to the main strip of bars. Would definitely stay here again!

The location of this property is ideal: walking distance from the pools, bars, boardwalk and restaurants. The sleeping accommodations were ideal, as we were a full house! The decor was fresh, and everything was brand new/clean. That said, that is where the positives end and the troubles begin! READ ON IF YOU'RE CONSIDERING RENTING FROM THESE OWNERS AND EXPECT TO HAVE A PLEASANT EXPERIENCE!

This past July 4th weekend was highly anticipated as our group of best friends were vacationing together to celebrate our friend's bachelorette. As high school and college best friends, this trip was very special and the first time ever we would all be together. The ladies hailed from all parts of the world- Portland, OR; Rochester, Corning & Buffalo, New York, NY; Boston, MA; and Toronto, Canada!
The time and money spent to be on the island and enjoy our vacation was very hindered by the way the owners treated the group of adult, paying clients. Being treated like children, and disrespected as customers (& people!) is an understatement.
Despite the contract signed and the initial verbal rules via the owner Denny, we were 100% unaware how strict and crazy- for lack of a better word- these owners were going to be.
From counting our group of girls every time any of us were outside the property, to literally watching us from the street as we left the premises, to "overseeing" the group upon our return- the lack of privacy and behavior on their behalf inflicted such controversy and guilt on our group, it truly threatened our time together.
As grown adults with serious careers, families, etc., it was such a shame to have our morals and lifestyles questioned by someone we had no affiliation other than helping their business and paying their mortgage. From the very first hours, as we were grilling hot dogs- the two owners helped themselves to sweeping the porch steps THAT WE WERE OCCUPYING, all while questioning who was using the grill (they were other renters from next door).
One of the times we left for a dinner outing, we couldn't help but notice "Daddy Den" watch us turn the corner at the end of the street. Two members of our party were leaving right after us, but were not in our group. As they were leaving to meet up with the rest of the group, they bumped right into Denny at the door. Why was he at the back door right after he THOUGHT we were all around the corner?
As a disclaimer, our friends absolutely know how to have a good time- that's why we chose PIB. That said, we are very respectful and just wanted to have a break from reality as we celebrated a wonderful friend kick off a new chapter in our lives.
Denny legitimately screamed at our friend (the one that travels 3 days a week for her high-demand job and found time to make this weekend possible) on behalf of actions he didn't agree with. We had a friend from out of town visit our town house after a night out, and had been told because of this we were going to be evicted and unable to finish our weekend. Thankfully, after hours of stress and conversation we were told we were "given a pass," and would be forgiven- but not first after having to hear about how Denny and Linda chose to raise their own children and how they expected everything in life to have consequences, and because "Denny promised to marry his wife and they were married for 47 years," we should follow the same morale. As professionals, we were astounded by the disrespect Denny showed and the implementation he put on our group. They are obviously in the wrong business if they are tired of "having to stay awake for 30 hours straight" because "year after year people don't do as they say under their roof."
The stories are unfortunately endless, but another very eerie thing was a duffel bag that showed up in our living room the early morning of our departure. It was filled with random female clothing, of different sizes, and belonged to no one in our group. When brought to Dennis and Linda's attention they took the opportunity to passively but very disapprovingly question us if it belonged to our "gentleman friend from the other night."
Overall, we felt very much under surveillance, very judged, and very creeped out from their behavior toward us. When you pay such a large amount of money for a weekend, we expect the treatment we deserve- which SHOULD have been non-biased owners who actually give us clean towels- not a free convention for how not to have fun. WHAT A DISAPPOINTMENT, and will make sure to spread the word to all of our many friends who love PIB.

Response from Dennis R, Owner at Harriet's House & Island Suites
Responded Jul 12, 2014
Thank you for taking the time to post your review. Most of our guests choose us for the two great reasons you list: we are right in the heart of downtown Put-in-Bay within walking distance of everything, and our accommodations are debatably the cleanest on the island! We appreciate reviews from our customers, both good and not so good. It provides us an opportunity to improve our services to our valued guests and to make sure other guests are aware of our basic policies. We have three very simple and direct requests of our visitors. First, we ask that if they smoke to please smoke outside so that future guests will stay in a smoke free environment. Second, we ask that our customers be respectful of other people’s right to enjoy the Island and that when returning to their accommodations in the evening, to please keep the noise to a minimum. And finally, we require that only registered guests enter the facilities. We are required to maintain a capacity limit in each rental unit for insurance purposes and fire code for the safety of all our guests. These three basic rules are sent to the person making the reservation when they book the room, they are posted in each of the facilities, and they are reviewed with each guest upon arrival. When checking in, our guests are requested to list the 10 guests that will be occupying the Town House. This particular guest registered ten visitors, which complies with the occupancy requirement. After checking in, the ladies proceeded to have their pictures taken with twelve women in the picture. When confronted, she expressed indignation that her integrity would be challenged. She then assured us that the occupancy requirement would be observed with the two extra ladies finding another room. This was just after they arrived on the site with two vehicles, even though the contract that they signed indicates only one vehicle with prior permission (parking is very limited). Her final statement to us was that there will be no further problems, since this is a “girls weekend”. Early the next morning, a gentleman came strolling out of the “girls weekend” town house. He was asked what he was doing by Security and he stated that he had spent the night in the town house, as he was buttoning up his shirt and pants. We are a mom and pop operation. We have invested our life’s savings in this venture. We know that guests who come to Put-in-Bay are seeking an enjoyable vacation and 99% of our guests abide by the rules and have a great time! But the fact is, we have rules in place for the safety and well-being of ALL our guests. It is unfortunate that the rule-breakers who get caught choose to publicly complain about it, but we stand by our establishment and we know that our good friends and guests (many of whom are repeat customers year after year) stand by us.

If you want to feel like a convict on the run, Harriet's House is for you! Not only will you enjoy the feeling of being watched 24/7 courtesy of the overly neurotic owners Denny and Linda, but you will also have a strict curfew enforced upon you! I stayed there with a group of family members. We were just having a nice family reunion but we were unable to have any good time due to the watchful eye. As soon as I arrived in front of Harriet's House by taxi the owner was badgering me for the name of who I was staying with and got increasingly paranoid as we were nearing our strict 10/ house limit. This continued as Denny felt the need to inspect the dinner we were having at the picnic table, and then he stayed up until 4 am keeping watch over anyone walking on the sidewalk in front of Harriet's House. I was unable to enjoy myself because I felt like I had to constantly look over my shoulder to make sure I wasn't going to get evicted. I left a day early, and I wouldn't even shower there because I felt as though the owners would be watching to make sure I didn't waste any water! Also, they are extremely degrading to you and make you wait outside on the sidewalk while they walk through and make sure you didn't tear the place apart. Ever had a place treat you more like a child than that? I know I haven't!

Sure, the location is by the downtown area and the houses are nice, but it's honestly not even worth it because you are unable to enjoy yourself at all! Denny feels as though he owns the island and because of that he feels as though he can tell you how to run your life. I would never recommend this place to anyone, and I certainly will never be returning. I would rather stay in a dive with cockroaches than feel like I was being watched 24/7.

I just left the Harriet house and everything being said about the owners is true. Denny even went as far as to follow my 56 year old father down the road at three in the morning to see where he was going (to get a pizza). Never have I been so stressed. You are constantly being watched. Don't even waste your money.
