Our plan was to have a reasonably early dinner so that we could walk back to our apartment before nightfall. The Petit Mesnil was perfectly situated for our purposes. On entering the restaurant, the manager's "welcome" was distinctly off-hand. All he could manage was to tell us to sit where we liked. As the restaurant only had 2 occupied tables, this left us with a large choice. Most of the restaurant was rather dingy, so we chose a table as near as possible to the back where there was day-light. After quite a long delay, we were given the menu and our orders were taken.
We chose the trout - a fish which normally doesn't take too long to cook. So given that the restaurant was nearly empty, we mistakenly thought it should not take too long. In fact, it was one and a half hours before our trout finally appeared - which meant that rather than walking back well before nightfall, we actually had to return through the forest in the dark! We were not offered any explanation as to why it had taken so long. However, we realized later that the manager preferred spending time in the bar with his friends rather than cooking in the kitchen.
As well as being extremely slow service, I also have my doubts about the hygiene. From our table, we could see into the kitchen and could see the manager blowing his nose and waiving his handkerchief over the kitchen stove.
So why do I give a "poor" rather than "terrible" rating? To be fair, the trout - when it finally arrived - was actually rather good (if a little overpriced).

We spend 1 night in the hotel with our 4 grand children and had a rather good experience. No luxury but we knew this when we booked the rooms. Shower and toilet space a little bit small. Would be difficult for someone big and tall. Good food - service slow but the owner is all by himself for the cooking. Breakfast very good ! A pity there were so many flies.

This is a Suitable restaurant in scenic village. Food is OK and the Chef will enquire about your experience eating his preparations. It is not a place for people on diet however and servings are huge.
We lamented the raer slow service.

The boss is not friendly
When I booked told me I could sleep on a Monday but the restaurant closed, so I book 1 night with breakfast
Qd we didn't arrive the boss blamed me for coming on his day off
Dirt in the shower, uncleaned room given the canvases and niches of Dirt
Not to mention lunch 10 euros / person from dirty cups. With butter and a bag of bread that he had taken from another table...he justified himself by saying that there was no bakery open....but 30 euros for 3 lunch where I did not eat anything so disgusted I paid them and I blame myself for having done it
The afsca should go check it.
Establishment to close.
Shame.

To avoid, very unpleasant reception by the arogant owner.
Room were dirty, probably not vacuumed and mopped for weeks. Towels reeked of the cigarette.
Since there is no alternative in the village we could only stay overnight and we even had to eat there. Food was correct. For breakfast we gave forfeit. Was our bad experience on the road from Compostela.

While renting a bungalow in the middle of the forest, we wanted to have dinner. We passed by Le Petit Mesnil, and we were pleasantly surprised by the warm welcome. we have choosen some trout and filet mignon. Both were very well cooked, with first class ingredients. I can recommend the filet mignon 'with 3 mustards'. Also the trout 'à l'ail' was as you can wish it. We didn't use the rooms.

Le petit Mesnil is a cheap place, in the wonderful region of the "Viroin Nature Valley".
Regional kitchen - the local truit is very good! - rooms are clean but old fashioned ....

Excellent as a starting point for a hiking tour in the beautiful surrounding of the "Viroin" river !
Also nearby is one of the most beautiful "steam railway" track of Europe, from Mariembourg - Treignes,

Passing through this pretty corner of Wallonia we had booked a room for one night in this hotel ...
The filth and dilapidation of the room made us flee the Pension before spending the night...
Several large dead insects lying on the ground ... many fleckers in the bedroom , cobwebs (with live spider) in the bedroom (above windows) ... mold in the bathroom ... frayed bath towels and with an unpleasant smell ... large pile of dust on the top of the bedroom cabinet ... television in the bedroom that does not work ... etc etc ... Shame on all levels...
