Nestled in an enviable location, the hotel offers easy access to the beach, restaurants, and shops, complemented by stunning ocean views. While the rooms are celebrated for their comfort and cleanliness, a few guests have noted issues with noise and size.

Detailed Reviews
Booked for a girlfriends trip in Aug 2024. I booked this property as the spaces looked nice, had a view of the ocean - which was important for my friend visiting from AZ, and booked this property as the price was great in comparison to some really crappy places to stay near there that were similar in price but location had no view or amenities. We were sooo delighted by this property and our experience. Seriously, it is an elevated experience for a "motel". The rooms are large, well decorated, well appointed, great views and there was a gift of multiple snack treats and water to enjoy as well as binoculars to use. The property has been gutted and remodeled. Everything was extremely well thoughtout!! There is a sauna (which we loved), well appointed workout room (with Peleton, free weights and tread mills), also salt water pool (yes, really), and hot tub spa area. The beds are super comfy, moreso than much more expensive properties I have stayed in globally. Super quiet property. Perfect location, with the beach across the street so our slider patio door was open all night listening to the ocean. On our way out at check out, the staff was great and it was quick and breezy. They gave us a parting gift of water and taffy for the road. I absolutely would stay here again and again as well as recommend it to anyone considering a stay in Newport.

My husband and I spent two nights at The Whaler. The ocean facing rooms all provide beautiful views! Our standard king room was comfortable, and we appreciated the small table and chairs set, as well as the chairs on the balcony. The layout of the room is quite functional, with the bathroom area separated by a wall so that if one of us was at the sink with the light on, the other wasn't disturbed while trying to sleep. The staff were all very amiable and accommodating, and it was nice to have coffee and tea available in the lobby throughout the day and evening. The Whaler's prices are relatively reasonable, and the location is great. We walked to the Nye Beach shopping/restaurant area numerous times, finding good dining options within a five minute stroll. I would happily stay at The Whaler again!

The hotel was in a great location right by the beach. We woke up each morning looking at the mighty Pacific Ocean, which is a sight to behold. We had a wonderful time, especially for our dog who loves to run around the beach playing fetch. He had a blast. It was his first vacation post Covid-19. I like the fact that they have faucets with hose and nozzle in multiple location to clean the sand off our shoes, and our dog's paws after having fun at the beach. The only drawback was the breakfast, which was not a sit down meal. For the amount of money they charge, they should have a small restaurant like setting to have a simple and relaxing morning meal. It's post Covid-19. Having packed meals should not be an excuse anymore for hotels that charges a lot of money.

This review is more for those who have been repeat guests dating back to before the current remodel, which is still ongoing. My wife and I have been coming to the Whaler for more than thirty years, far more often than any other coast property. Considering the location, amenities, and rates, it has long been the perfect place for us.
The rooms are clean, the beds are comfortable.
We were warned to expect construction noise during the day, but the only sounds we heard were the occasional beeping of equipment backing up.
There’s easy access to the beach, or there will be when construction is complete. Also, the elevator has been a boon for my wife, whose bum knee has been a problem in recent years.
At some point in the past, the Whaler was purchased by Hallmark Resorts, who were pretty much content to leave to operate as it had been for years. A year or two ago, they began a remodel project, adding another building, and refreshing the original building with new paint and siding where needed, and updating the room interiors. The outdoor “improvements” include shorting the balconies by a few inches, and additional timbers to support them. This may have been a safety issue; the only complaint is they are now too narrow to easily position the chairs.
The room refresh was a bit of an upgrade, the main feature seems to be the in the bathroom. Our unit this time had walk-in shower with up level faucets, and nice tiles. However, the only lighting in the sink area is a ring of LEDs around the mirror, which is too dim to shave by (unless you favor the patchy look.)
Avoid connecting rooms if you value peace and quiet. Like many properties, the two locking doors between the rooms are not well sound proofed, and we were awakened in the wee hours a couple of times by a baby in the adjoining room.
My main complaint is that rates have increased dramatically. We stayed three weekday nights last August for $469, this July, three weekday nights cost $718. I realize that we had inflation last year, but that is an increase of 53%!
One of the perks of the old Whaler was the breakfast: individually packaged cereal, oatmeal, and yogurt, and some fruit. When Covid hit, these were available as grab and go bags, filled as per your order submitted the day before. When asked, staff was unable to provide clarity on whether they would be back after construction. The current practice of charging (at the Oscars roach coach) for what was once included doesn’t bode well

The property sits just steps away from the beach access, so it was easy to just pick up and go down to the ocean anytime. On the property, there were also some hoses conveniently located so that you could rinse off before heading up to your room. This was so helpful cleaning up, not only for us, but also for our dog who frolicked in the ocean. Location was great because while you're close to the beach, you're also close to the main part of town and the Newport Historic Bayfront. The room was clean. We had a pet-friendly room, and it was fresh. I say this because, at some other pet-friendly places we stayed, some of the rooms had that pet smell. Not here. Great staff.

We always try and stay at the Whaler- location, value and professional staff are guidelines we use. Now, with the new upgrades we are even more satisfied with the experience. It has great location with everything in close walking distance and the ramp to the beach is the finest in Newport. We are anxious for the new addition to be completed!

This is the third stay at the Whaler for my wife & me, one of many for her, as her family came here for getaways. The ocean view is great & the Whaler’s just across the street from the beach, but the place is average now (although under renovation)—the beds & bathroom look clean, but the room’s musty. We were put in a pet-friendly room & charged a significant fee although we didn't have a pet with us, & told the front desk that when we made our reservation. When my wife asked about the fee & mentioned the musty smell, they removed the pet fee but told her, “We would have given you a better room if we’d known you didn’t have a pet”.
So we paid full price on what even the Whaler even said was a second rate room for having a pet we didn’t bring! When asked if we wanted housekeeping during our stay, we said yes—but never got it. Lastly, there are no blackout curtains, so if you’re not a heavy sleeper, prepare to put a pillow over your eyes bright & early; and when you get up, there’s coffee & juice for breakfast. We skipped more sightseeing after checking out, since we were sleep-deprived & just wanted to head home & rest. Overall, not a great value for the price.
Update: When I gave this review, verbally, while checking out, when asked about our experience. The manager apologized for the unhappy experience and comped our room. Thank you for taking previously happy customers' complaints seriously and making it right.

The bed was very comfortable and the room 3rd floor) was spacious. Surprised this is listed as a motel with all the amenities offered. Appreciated the fridge, well stocked coffee station, microwave and complimentary snacks in the room as well as the new spa and sauna room and pool.
Staff were very friendly and our room was actually made up after the first night stay which has not been typical in our travels since 2022. Location makes a number of local restaurants walkable (loved dinner at Nana’s Irish pub) We would definitely return next year!

A wonderful getaway to Newport, Oregon for Thanksgiving. We stayed at The Whaler right above Nye Beach. It is a great location for beach walking, visiting the Aquarium, shopping , and dining. The Whaler has just renovated and is lovely. A breakfast cart is available in the parking lot every morning! Can’t wait to go back. A tip: if you’re planning a holiday meal out , make reservations beforehand. We were fortunate to get last minute reservations at the The Adobe Resort (which was delicious) but most places were completely booked.

We were assigned a 2nd floor room at check in and true to form of many of the buildings/hotels along this stretch of beach, the construction is such that you hear each footstep from the room above. We went back to the front desk to see if we could re-room and I honestly have never had a more positive experience resolving an issue. From front desk to housekeeping, the staff at this property were upbeat and friendly. I can't speak highly enough about how pleasant all of our interactions were.
The breakfast situation was interesting but I thought it was a nice alternative to having a spread set out in the lobby and people cramming into a small space.
The room was good. The decks have been updated with composite that didnt feel slippery or dangerous to walk on compared to other properties on the same coast. Sideways wind and rain didn't get into the room from outside.
The beds were firm but not too firm.
The pool and workout room were quite nice.
Beach access was near ideal for a place not directly on the beach. Cross a 2 lane 25mph road and walk down a very pleasant ramp right next to the property to get to the beach. Beats a ton of stairs that may or may not be very rickety.

The motel is rwo stories, however there is an elevator. There is good access for walkers if you don't mind the ground floor entrance. It's a hilly area, so you will most likely not want to take long walks from the motel.
Not sure if anyone has replied to you yet? We actually did the walk a couple of times going through Yaquina Bay park & it took around 30 minutes to the Pier.
We stayed in July and had no issues with room being hot. There are windows to open to get a breeze if you need.
I would call or email the hotel direct. I found everyone I dealt with nice and helpful.
