The Hotel Zags Portland garners accolades for its stylish atmosphere and friendly service, although Wi-Fi and staff responsiveness have occasionally fallen short. While the array of amenities, including a courtyard and game room, are generally appreciated, guests have pointed out extra charges and some dated aspects. Opinions on value and room experiences vary, with praise for cleanliness and amenities but criticism over unexpected fees and room issues like odors and noise. Its downtown location is a highlight, offering easy access to Portland's attractions.

Very nice boutique hotel in excellent condition throughout. Friendly staff, well appointed rooms and $15 of the nightly usage fee is credited to your room for food and drinks. The bed was comfortable and the room was spacious.
Bikes and helmets are available for guests to use and the valet parking is a nice touch, with unlimited in & out privileges. The parking facility is underground and secure.
There's an excellent restaurant off the lobby with lots of local dining within walking distance.
We'll definitely be returning to The Zags for our next stay in Portland.

We drove and had an easy time parking in the garage. Check in was incredibly pleasant and the staff was so friendly and generous! They have a little shop that has cool Portland / local items where they gave me a $15 credit to pick one of the things to take home! Loved the game room, bikes, and amenities! The bed was comfy and the room clean and nice. The coffee in the in room coffee maker was good and I loved the soaps (and that they didn’t use single use plastics!!!) walking / biking distance from everything!

a totally remodeled and rebuilt motor lodge.
Swanky now! Kind of a "club" feel. Modern and very tastefully decorated.
Very sweet folks, eager to answer questions and make your stay a pleasure.

Our room was fairly small, something harking back to it's prior days. Very comfy bed and pilloows! But sure felt European! Microwave, refer, coffee. Mini-bar with lots of temptations. No gym, but free day use for the very well maintained and outfitted 24hour fitness around the corner.

One thing gettng more common with "green" thinking: Bathroom liquid amenities were dispensed thru bottles in the shower. No waste of packaging and little plastic bottles/lids.I can handle all of this just fine, but it is a minor annoyance to deal with every time i wanted to simply wash my hands.
It is for this reason, I always travel with mini-hand soaps!

Zag's is a fun, and affordable downtown hotel. Found a fantastic rate online thru a 3rd party vendor. Shop around, you might get lucky!

The hotel is a good location just south of downtown which means no crowds, fewer street folks, close to the university and easily accessible to the river. The front desk staff was great but had issues getting my room cleaned---it never got fully cleaned and restocked during my stay. A major miss for a hotel on the higher end.

Also the resort and parking fees are ridiculous. I've seen them respond elsewhere that they are the lowest for hotels in the surrounding areas but they are still exorbitant and covered parking can be had nights and weekends for a quarter of the price or less!

Wouldnt go back with all the negatives.

Thank you for the feedback nato187886. I am glad you enjoyed the location and our front desk staff. I agree if you want stay over service during your stay this shouldn't be a problem and I be looking into why this was not done during your visit. We do charge for parking but you are correct we have the lowest price among other hotels in the area of course if you would rather park in a different parking area you are more than welcome. We work to make sure our Guest Amenity Fee has value with our $15 F&B credit, the 24 hour fitness passes, 10% off for future bookings, two bottle of water, making sure our game lounge is fully stocked and ready for guest to enjoy, use of our gear shed and other perks. We also make sure this is on all confirmation emails and noted while booking. We would never want a guest to be surprised by this charge during check in. I hope next time you are in the Portland area you find a hotel that better suits your needs. Cheers, Rachel

For the July 23-24, 2022 weekend we had use of the King Premier City View room with soaking tub room to celebrate my partner's birthday weekend.

Upon entering, the room was nice in its setup and layout. The King size bed was comfortable to sleep on with a nice pillow top firm mattress and pillows offered. The A/C worked well to keep the room comfortable. And the room was quiet, barely heard any city noise at night. You need your key card to access the elevator to your floor and room, which is a nice security feature.

It didn't have any USB ports which was annoying and an old-fashioned clock radio that you could plug in an IPod on top (if one had one anymore). It would have been nice if the room had a USB plug in base or lamps that had that feature like other upscale hotels offer nowadays. Luckily, we had brought our adaptors.

It had a mini fridge which we were thankful that came with the room and got used.

The closet had two robes in it, but we didn’t use them. The bathroom amenities and shower gel, shampoo and conditioner offerings were pleasant to use. There was no ice bucket in the room, however out in the hallway by the elevator, they had a large freezer chest filled with mini plastics bags of ice for you to use.

The soaking tub was deep and worked well, but you had to be very careful stepping over the high tub to get in/out, older people with mobility issues would find this difficult and dangerous. I know this is supposed to be an added feature for the room, but honestly, we mainly ended up using the room to sleep in and had to remind ourselves to use the tub, which we only did once. After 20 minutes of sitting in it we were bored, so not sure it’s worth the added price for this feature plus all that wasted water. I think I’d rather have them add a hot tub to their enclosed outdoor community space then add more soaking tubs in other rooms.

Speaking of, the enclosed outdoor community space was attractive and nicely arranged for use with various social areas like a couple of gas fire pits, game section, etc. and over the weekend they had the live Portland based soul-folk musical group “Wren the band” perform Sunday afternoon who were fantastic while a local wine vendor sampled their wares each afternoon making it for a fun and relaxing afternoon.

We didn’t get a chance to try the restraint downstairs as it was closed over the weekend. However, there are restaurants within walking distance around the neighborhood.

Overall, the staff we engaged with were pleasant, accommodating and helpful and greeted us upon entering each time making for a friendly comfortable atmosphere.

I would recommend the Hotel Zags to stay in, but next time I think we will try a room without the soaking tub.

It was amazing. The receptionists (Big thank you to Michael) were very kind and helped us out with recommendations for food and places to go. The hotel is located in the middle of downtown so it’s very easy to get to different places. There are many restaurants around and places where to shop all in walking distance. I stayed here with my brother very spontaneously and it was totally worth it! They have bikes, longboards and yoga stuff to borrow and the whole hotel is very modern and clean and not to pricey so it’s perfect for young adults! Parking is also available and we felt very safe in the area!

Thank you for the 5 star review laurakD9576SF! Michael is great and is definitely in the know of what to do while in Portland. We are happy you and your brother stayed with us and, "felt very safe in the area." It is nice to be close to downtown and able to explore but need your night in a safe quiet area. Most hotels do not have their own lot in Portland and have to out source their parking we are so happy to have a secure lot at the hotel. We hope to have you back soon. Cheers, Rachel

It was a pleasant surprise to find The Hotel Zags in Portland! The staff was amazing, especially Jordan. The hotel has a modern cool vibe with convenient on-site parking, large open outdoors seating area with fireplace that we definitely took advantage of. The quality of the room and even the toiletries provided was natural and organic which we loved. The Zags was the perfect setting for our little Getaway in Portland . We’ll be back! Thank you 😊

Our room was clean, comfortable, and convenient. The staff were helpful, friendly and kind. We had come up by train earlier in the day, and Andrew found us a room that we could check into early so that we didn't have to leave our suitcases with staff. Although they put us into a "pet-friendly" room, we couldn't tell that an animal had ever been there. It was pristine! My husband and I read the paper and rested until we went to our event that afternoon. We were also visiting a family member at OHSU. The mass transit options near the hotel made the trip very convenient, as we could always find a max train or streetcar anywhere we wanted to go. We visited the Art Museum and the Oregon Historical Society.
Our breakfast in the restaurant next morning was fantastic! Good coffee and the brioche french toast was amazing!

I can't say enough good things about my stay at Hotel Zags. Starting with the basics, the property was clean, welcoming and located at a great and convenient part of town that feels safe and clean to walking around. There is a good size food pod and several good dining options within a short walking distance, the Keller Auditorium and the awesome Japanese restaurant Murata is just right there, as well as the calmer parts of Waterfront Park. If you are in the mood to explore further, the transit mall is right there and you can hop on a bus or MAX to get to any parts of town.

But there is nothing "basic" about Hotel Zags. The onsite amenities include a great rec room with a pool table, board games, shuffleboard, and darts, as well as a library of fun things like a Nintendo Switch with games, skateboard, bikes, scooters, and related safety equipment. (Note that this is what the guest amenities fee is for.) The room we were at which is a deluxe suite has a good layout and is clean, modern and stylist. The whole place has a clean feel. One word about the view is that it's in the middle of the city so you will likely get to see the building across the street so don't expect the skyline.)

But perhaps the most enjoyable part of our stay, the part that makes me highly recommend Hotel Zags is the staff. From day 1 when I booked my room via a third party site, the staff was attentive to our need for being extra cautious with Covid because of family members and made accommodations for use to be out of the way of as much foot traffic as possible. And upon check in, Jordan absolutely treated us like best friends and took care of all of our concerns, hook us up, and look after us. By the end of our two night stay, we were just as sad to leave Jordan as we were the hotel. She is a delightful gem of a person and I hope you get to meet her during your stay at Hotel Zags.

A couple things to note:

1) Be prepared for some bus and light rail noise as the routes go by the building. Nothing terrible for us, but people have different sensitivities to city noises, though it is at a quieter part of downtown Portland.

2) The onsite restaurant has an amazingly large patio with heaters and gas fire pits...really nice. The food though is nothing special...good enough to cure a hungry stomach but not a fancy experience if that's what you are looking for. Good drinks and great place to hang out though.

I would 100% staycation at this place again and feel great recommending this place to any of my out-of-town guests.

First of all, the staff here is fabulous! Jordan, Shaunice and Michael are friendly, responsive and just super nice. Especially after being in the car for 7 hours, it was nice to have a clean, fun place to relax. There is a resort type fee, but if you take advantage of the snack bar, water, gear shed and restaurant, it ends up being a wash. The lounge and game room are cool places to hang out. You can walk to the downtown area in about 10 minutes and it is a safe walk. (While we were there, the hotel restaurant was not serving breakfast, so we went to the Urban Farmer. We did eat at the hotel restaurant for dinner and highly recommend the roasted vegetable appetizer.)

Just a note, we did stay in a suite, and there was no shower door, so the floor of the bathroom did get wet, but we were able to wipe up with the bath mat. But I believe in the other rooms, there is a shower door, so it may only have been an issue for our room.

Since this hotel had all the amenities for a comfortable stay, including dinner and entertainment, it is the perfect place to stay, especially if you are on an I5 road trip.

There was a $15 minibar credit, although I am not sure it was "daily." Minibar had smaller bottles of wine, beer, Voss bottled water, soda, little tins of coated pretzels, gummy bears, a Snickers... things like that. I do not think it could be applied to the restaurant, but I never asked - so, it could be worth a shot.
