Leaving their high-tech lives behind in San Francisco, Dusty and Steve moved to Portland in 2002. From the moment they laid eyes on Lion and the Rose Victorian Guest House, they knew this historic home with its wrap around porch, garden court, grand dining area, and eight charming guest rooms was meant to be shared with others. Authentically vintage yet up to date, every room is air conditioned and equipped with cable TV, free wifi, a computer and printer, and internet access. Each guest room also has luxurious bed linens and towels and an amazon Echo with Alexa. These master hosts are delighted to share their mansion and the city's natural beauty with you.

We felt at home in the lovely spacious BnB. The hotel in in a great location. The Victorian architecture and decor are unique and sort of fun. Most importantly we hung out a bit in the parlors and chatted with the hosts and other guests. It gave us a feel of having a place in Portland.

My first visit to the Lion & the Rose B&B was an extraordinary experience in every way; luxurious, comfortable, peaceful, and friendly.

Innkeepers, Dustin and Steve, have taken the B&B experience to the high 9s. I woke each morning to an impeccably prepared formal breakfast awash with style, class, and variety with each new day.

The Starina room was spotless, fabulously appointed, and had the most comfortable bed I have ever slept in while away from home.

I am sincerely looking forward to my second visit in September.

This B&B is managed by a very sweet couple. I was amazed to see how well they maintain the Victorian decor & pay attention to detail. The lining on the table in your room, the telephone or even the bathrobes are beautiful, elegant & fit the theme. The lady serves you fresh breakfast every morning in beautiful chinaware.

They also offer soaps, lotions & bedsheets for sale. We bought the sheets & loved them.

Other key points:
* Very close to all happening places in Oregon, situated in downtown
* Accessible to some late night restaurants as well
* The outdoors are beautiful with swing, rose gardens & tea tables
* Toiletries, napkins, bubble bath etc are made available
* The upper section is kids-free so gives you privacy & is quite w/o any running/crying around.

They offer you discount for future stays with a purchase :D

My review is mixed, first of all let me say that the B&B is conveniently located in a vibrant neighborhood of Portland, and that the Victorian via the early 1990s decor is great fun, the public rooms are very photo worthy. That said there were a number of small fixable things we didn't enjoy. Firstly the micro fiber sheets were uncomfortable and rather sweaty to sleep on, though the bed was comfortable. Overall the home is very clean, but the too small bathroom shower was in need of a deep cleaning to remove mold. The furnishings were comfortable, but too much space was taken by ornamental items made of composite materials. Our room was above a pair of industrial coolers and the noise from them was problematic for someone who lives in the quiet of the suburbs. And finally the serve yourself breakfast (a great idea) had a few items that were shall we say a bit past Thier prime. If none of these complaints seem important to you then you will love it, we didn't. It would not say 'don't'.

Overall Impression: Institutional - Disappointing

I am absolutely flabbergasted! The #1 reviews on Tripadvisor did not match the reality and there are so many of them! I've stayed in B&B's all over the USA since the early 80's and never before stayed in one where I felt ripped off and was happy to leave.

The house is amazing. Worth a look, but not a stay.

When we arrived, we could not use the front stairs to the house. They were being painted and were taped off during our stay so we had to come in from behind.

Upon entering the house, the first impression is an overpowering musty smell. Something needs cleaning. The downstairs is overdone, very chaotic looking.

Steve gave us an introduction, mentioned the PowerPoint presentation we could view because he finds it too time consuming to repeat his spiel to each arriving guest.

Two things stood out during his introduction (other than the PowerPoint option). He asked for gratuities for the staff and for our dietary restrictions. I asked for no melon and was told to "pick it out". It would have been so simple to make a bowl for me without melon.

This is the first time I've ever been reminded to leave a gratuity when I checked in to any accommodation. There was a big envelope in the room marked "GRATUITY". Seems to me that would have been enough.

In spite of having more people working there than any B&B I've ever visited, breakfast was buffet, snacks were available, but nothing homemade, all were bulk from Costco. We watched them being removed from the Costco package.

We normally look forward to breakfasts at a B&B.. that is half of the experience. The breakfast at The Lion and the Rose is buffet, but with no choices. One dish of fruit, one egg dish, one meat dish, one type of bread (muffin or biscuits they days we were there).

This is the only B&B I've ever visited where we thought it better to go out for breakfast. On the first day the "choice" was a watery scrambled egg dish that was already cold by the time I had my turn at the buffet. Tony wanted to go out the second morning, but I convinced him to give L&R another try. The second breakfast was so bad I could only eat the fruit that I picked out.. which still tasted like melon to me! Eggs were tasteless hard things baked in a casserole with a plastic-like hardened cheese topping (cold again). Free breakfasts at inexpensive motels are much better! They even cut the muffins in half - why? To save $?

Instead of having someone serving guests, Steve, one of the owners, sat down (coming in late) to breakfast which was odd. We were amazed that he pushed food onto his fork with his fingers.

I got sick after the first days breakfast. 40 min after eating breakfast, the only food or drink I had that morning, I had a severe headache and churning stomach - I travel frequently in 3rd world countries (3-6 months per year) and never get sick! I was sick in bed all day, finally feeling better about 10pm.

I left a few items on the bed including an umbrella and a knit shirt, when I went down to breakfast. Came back immediately after breakfast to the bed made, items moved, and the rough plastic tip of my umbrella embedded in a shirt which I could not separate without making a runner in the shirt.

Our room was very noisy - much street noise. We had the Lavonna Room which was very large, bright and cheery. If it had only been elsewhere!

Glad to leave!

I wrote the owner about our experience on our return home after visiting 2 other B&B's in the area which we thoroughly enjoyed. We received a check for $40 for the breakfasts we "found disappointing".

Liked: The Lavonna Room - big, bright, cheerful
Disliked: Everything else. We are so sorry we wasted our time and money on 2 nights here that we didn't enjoy -- no that is not exactly right -- we were irritated and felt cheated by our visit to The Lion and the Rose. Expected much more for the price and the #1 reviews by other tripadvisor members.

During our trip from Vancouver BC to Portland we stayed at these B&B's:

The Heron Haus in Portland (very comfortable, great location, quiet, gigantic room, excellent breakfast); Portland's Lion and the Rose (wish we had not wasted the $ - feel and food institutional and bland, beautiful room); Vancouver, WA's Briar Rose (comfortable, friendly, great price, good homemade breakfasts); Thistledown in N. Vancouver BC (3rd stay, my favorite, terrific breakfasts, extremely friendly, Tosh the Scottie for company); Binners in Victoria BC (nice rooms, good tasty breakfast, but no public areas to sit and relax).

Response from srunger, Owern / Innkeeper at Lion and the Rose Victorian Guest House

Sadly, every so often, we fail to connect with a guest in a way that allows us to meet their needs during their stay. We only learned of this guest's issues in an e-mail after their stay. My partner and I have devoted the past seven years of our lives working hard to make the Lion and the Rose a great place to stay. Our goal is to meet the needs of all our guests.

How off putting is it to be asked the minute you arrive to sign and agreement to be responsible for damages. This was a first for me. I wonder why these guys have a B&B. The breakfast is serverd at their convenience, one sitting, one time only. And though coffee was promised early, none was available either day I was there and no apoolgy was made. In fact what I got was a shoulder shrug.

Ok. On the plus side, if you can handle the stairs, the rooms are beautiful and while you are cautioned not to screw up the plumber with toiltet paper, the room is comfortable. But no hair dryer was provided. I did finally see that one would be given if asked but while I left a note, I never got a hair dryer. These people need to understand that women who travel expect a hair dryer. This inn was not inexpensive and hair dryers should be an amenity each guest can expect. Before the trip I emailed and asked about the availability of hair dryers and day spas in the area but I never received a reply. What is up with that?

The area around the inn has a few decent but not outstanding restaurants. I heard that transit was close by but as I had a car, don't know how that worked.

I have extensive experience traveling with hotels of all types and B&Bs. This is the only one I would never choose again.

... B & B's I've been fortunate enough to stay at. This was my 3rd or 4th visit to the Lion and the Rose. I've been staying there ever since it opened in the early 90's and the inn continues to be one of my favorites. And I have stayed at many B & B's over my many business trips throughout the country.

The innkeepers are great guys who make you feel very comfortable and welcome. Anyone traveling to the Portland area has lots of choices of inns and B & B's but this without a doubt is the finest.

We were welcomed to the city of Portand on our first visit by our fantastic stay at this great neighborhood location B & B. It is a charming old house which has been lovingly restored, in a neighborhood of beautiful old homes. The owners and staff couldn't have made us feel more welcomed and comfortable with the great service. The breakfasts were outstanding, especially the apple crepes and chocolate muffins. The beds were so comfortable in nice sized rooms. The gardens and landscaping were very charming. We look forward to going back again.

My husband and i recently stayed here from May 14 - 23. We stayed in the Escapade and the Starina Rooms. We were in two different rooms because when making the reservation for so many nights, it was recommended that we stay in those rooms instead of a much smller room that was available for the entire time. While both were extremely comfortable, we preferred the Escapade. The breakfasts were so yummy and the easy availability of snacks was quite nice, although harmful to diets! Having Steve, one of the owners, to join us for breakfast each morning was delightful. The house is beautifully and tastefully decorated. Having light housekeeping was just fine and being able to opt out of breakfast (and the nominal cost) when schedules conficted was also nice. Being able to leave our luggage at the B&B on our last day until our flight was very helpful. I absolutely loved the neighborhood. I would not hesitate to stay there again.

None that I know of but Portland is a walkable city. We took the train to Washington Park and walked for Miles on trails throughout the park. Dusty and Steve at the Inn could tell you also.

I think it depends on what you consider downtown. It is in a wonderful neighborhood with restaurants and stores a couple of blocks away. I'm in fairly good shape so can walk pretty far. Nice little walk to the Voodoo Doughnut II shop..........The neighborhood is really cute for walking around and enjoying gardens and landscaping. Staff and owners couldn't have been nicer.

Contact Steve and Dusty for pricing and availability. But we very much enjoyed our stay there. The rooms were comfy and the hospitality genuine. (503) 287-9245. To check availability, visit their website. I have stayed twice and enjoyed it both times. Love the cookies and jelly bean snacks they leave out for guests, too.
