Planning a trip to Portland Oregon? A stay at the Benson Hotel is a must do. There is so much history of Portland & the Benson Hotel you need to see. A beautiful lobby with polished marble floors, Chrystal chandeliers, ornate molded ceilings, and walnut woodwork all around. A very nice seating area with a welcoming big fireplace. Easy fast check-in at the front desk with a pleasant helpful staff. Ask them for a history of the Benson Hotel and they will give you a printed pamphlet explaining about Simon Benson and the hotel. You will not be disappointed with the Breakfast selections, the menu prices are very reasonable. The Eggs Benedict was made to perfection.
There is a staircase which leads to all twelve floors of the hotel. This staircase is like a historic museum with photographs with plaques explaining about them. Famous guests, early Portland, the Rose parade, Simon Benson. Take time to read the plaques. When we were on the 12th floor, we came across Carl who was delivering food service to a guest. When he finished the room service he came back to us and asked if we had been on the lower level of the hotel yet. Like a tour guide Carl led us to the lower level of the hotel and showed us the hotel wine cellar and an original coat closet. Carl asked, “can you locate these rooms as you look around? The rooms are located behind hidden doors in the walls”. It is refreshing to come across an employee that is proud of his place of employment.
Our guest room had nice lighting and big windows to take in the views. The rooms have recently been updated. The bed was very comfortable.
The city of Portland has worked hard to clean up downtown Portland. No more homeless people camped out on the sidewalks. We felt safe walking around taking in the sights and shopping. We will definitely return for a future stay at the Benson Hotel.

The cab dropped us off at The Benson and within a minute there was a staff person to take care of our luggage and delivered right up to our room while we checked in. The staff was very professional everywhere we encountered them. We ate several times at the restaurant downstairs and had room service, food was hot and very good. The room was a nice size AND loved the soaking tub..We can't wait to return to Portland and stay here again!! The r

Claire from the front desk was very helpful. Upon my arrival I received a text from her asking me if everything was OK with my room. I later went to grab some dinner, but had failed to note if there was a fridge or microwave in my room. I texted Claire and received a prompt response letting me know that the rooms had fridges and that a microwave would be brought up by housekeeping. Everyone had smiles on during check-in/checkout which is always refreshing and the personal touch of contacting me via text was very effective.

The Benson far exceeded my expectations on several levels. 1. Excellent service in particular Palm Court restaurant staff like Kathryn who is warm, friendly and attentive; and Bobby who engaged us in entertaining conversation and much laughter. 2. We had delightful breakfast at the Palm Court and I would highly recommend the Eggs Benedict’s or omelettes, and chicken and waffles. They were delish and very reasonable. Both of them are accommodating with different options for your breakfast. Just request and your wish will be granted. 3. The lobby is stunning and grand but yet not stuffy. Definitely historic and don’t miss the staircase museum which provides vivid history of the Benson and then some. 4. The new fitness center is awesome with nice selection of cardio machines and weights, stretching and quiet rooms as well. Absolutely loved it. 5. Rooms did not disappoint either and was tastefully furnished in neutral tones and looks classic and classy. Well appointed bathrooms with beautiful walk in shower. 6. Benson is Centrally located just south of pearl district and north of the downtown core making it so walkable. Only 0.6 miles to PSU (Portland State University) where there is a mega Saturday farmers market on Park Ave with plethora of vendors and incredible choices. 7. I had the opportunity to meet Howard the Benson GM. He leads with great passion, and collaborate with his staff to make the guest experience extraordinary. I witnessed him picking up litter as well as tidying up chairs in lobby and even wiping the coffee tables. I was most impressed with his exemplary leadership and being a hands-on manager. I cannot wait to stay there again.

We were assigned room 538 which is a connecting room with room 537.
Room was very well lit. Bathroom was on the small side with the European-style glass door instead of a shower curtain. This is annoying as post-shower, when you push the glass door out, water will get everywhere on the floor.
The tub ledge is quite high so you have to lift your legs quite high up to get in and out. The sink was similarly high. Limited sink counter space due to the small sink but there are shelves.
The room provided two luggage racks. I really appreciate when hotels do that because you might have more than 1 person in the room and both of you will have a luggage needing a rack!
Bed was super comfortable memory foam. Some of the pillowcases don't smell fresh like someone's perfume and some had detergent scent. I hope that the sheets and covers were changed!
There is fridge which has a key on it that said to return to front desk on check out. The fridge was empty and we didn't turn that key in at check-out. Don't know the purpose of that.
There were 2 complimentary bottles of water in the room. No view, overlooks a wall of the hotel.

Hi Tardykat, thank you for your time to share your experience with your recent stay at the Benson Hotel. We have shared your comments regarding the bathroom and shower and passed it along to our team. We do appreciate your comments on the luggage racks. I am pleased that you enjoyed to two. I have also shared with our housekeeping team your feedback on the pillowcases. I can personally assure you that all the linens on the beds are changed and cleaned. We will follow up with our engineering team your comments about the key in the fridge. Some rooms have views of neighboring building. In the future, whether here or other places, always good to request city view. We look forward to seeing you back. Best regards.

I spend 90+ nights per year in just Hilton brands alone and travel to Portland regularly. I'm middle aged and not high maintenance. Additionally due to my industry/company, I was required to travel during the entire COVID nightmare. I totally understand the challenges and changes the pandemic brought to hotels and have a great deal of respect for the hospitality industry as a whole.
This is my first guest experience at the Benson under the Hilton/Curio badging.
Areas that shined during our 5 night stay: Service and food at the Palm Court was wonderful (everyday). Updates to all public spaces and actual guest room were impressive. Quality bedding, linens, pillows and towels were much appreciated. Daily maid service was spot on too.
Areas that fell short/disappointed: Check-in; two young men at front desk and nether were friendly or acknowledge my Diamond status until I asked what my benefits were. I had two large/heavy boxes shipped to the hotel and asked for them to be brought up to the room. The initial response was to take them yourself? I had three large suitcases with me and insisted they get someone to do it and they reluctantly did...
Check-out; mature mask wearing lady was not friendly. She had an issue printing a copy of the folio. My $30.00 per day diamond food/drink credit was not applied. She again had an issue correcting it. Afterwards running out the side door for her smoke break.
Bathroom however newer/modern is the smallest (no counter space either) I've ever experience at any level of accommodation including a cruise ship we were on for Thanksgiving.
Telephone's in our guest room did not work?
Christmas tree and decor was just okay; not to the standard in previous years.
More times than not there was no one manning the front door. This is an issue with people checking in with bags. The local crazy street people also were aware of the front doors being left unattended too...

Response from Danny Feist, Guest Services / Front Office at The Benson Portland, Curio Collection By Hilton
As a Hilton member, I expected much better from my recent stay at the Benson Hotel in Portland. What should have been a pleasant family trip turned into a frustrating experience marred by multiple issues.
The most concerning problem was our room keycard, which failed to work throughout our entire stay. This meant we had to rely on staff to let us into our room every single time we returned. Not only was this a major inconvenience, but it also left us feeling vulnerable in a room we couldn't enter ourselves. Surprisingly, the staff seemed to downplay this significant issue, offering neither a solution nor a room change.
Inside the room, we encountered more disappointments. The bath soap dispenser was empty, leaving us without a basic necessity. To compound matters, the TV was non-functional, eliminating a key source of entertainment and relaxation for our family.
These problems might have been more tolerable if met with attentive service and genuine concern. However, the lack of meaningful response to our keycard issue was particularly disheartening.
As a loyal Hilton member, I've come to expect a certain level of comfort and service. My stay at the Benson Hotel fell noticeably short of these expectations. The combination of non-working essentials and apparent indifference from the staff made for an unsettling and disappointing experience. I sincerely hope the hotel management takes immediate steps to address these issues and restore the level of quality that Hilton members expect and deserve.

Thank you for sharing your detailed feedback. We deeply regret that your stay at The Benson did not meet your expectations and that you faced several inconveniences during your visit. The issues you encountered, particularly with the room keycard, soap dispenser, and TV, are unacceptable and do not reflect the standard of service we strive to provide. It's particularly concerning that our response to these issues fell short, and we sincerely apologize for the frustration this caused. Your experience is far from the level of comfort and service that our guests, especially our loyal Hilton members, should expect. Please know that your feedback will be taken seriously, and we will address these matters with our team to prevent such occurrences in the future. We hope you might consider giving us another chance to provide the quality experience you deserve. Warm Regards, The Benson Team

We had truly an amazing experience @ the Benson hotel for 2 extraordinary nights. The Baroque revival architecture is absolutely stunning and so well kept up for a 1912 built hotel. As you go through the classic revolving doors, it takes you back to the nostalgic era of glamor, exquisite taste, grandeur of stunning lobby. All clad in polished wood from floor to ceiling and intricate ceiling tiles is breathtaking. Checkin was seamless and the rooms were well appointed, very modern and tastefully done, and the bed was super comfortable we didn't want to get out of bed. HaHa ! The Benson is centrally located :- Powell bookstore, Pearl District, Old Town, Chinatown, varied restaurants/eateries just to name a few are all within 5-10 mins walk. The service from front desk, to house keeping and the valet was impeccable. The staff and management takes great pride and willing to go above and beyond.
Last but not least, do not miss the historic marbled stairwell on the north-end of the hotel. Make sure to with card access, take elevator to the top floor, make a left and walk to end of hallway, and so through the stairway door, and viola the fascinating marbled stairwell awaits. Make your way on the well lit marbled stairs down to the first floor and explore most intriguing stories, photos set as a different theme per floor.
The Benson is indeed a true GEM in Portland.

The rooms are recently renovated with plush carpets and nice furniture, the beds are good but the pillows are old and lumpy. The bathrooms, as mentioned in several other reviews, are very small - but perfectly functional. The views are great and, on a sunny day, it’s glorious having views across Portland downtown.
The building itself is historic with a beautiful, large, wood panelled lobby.
The bar experience was really good, with friendly, knowledgeable service and generous pours.
We were looking forward to great service throughout with so many reviews mentioning this. Unfortunately this wasn’t our experience with reception. Room service calls went unanswered, and were eventually greeted by abrupt staff, requests to reception were often responded to with a vacant stare and a noncommittal response. When we arrived with luggage, the bell boy looked at us struggling up the steps and then went back to his phone. We were also denied a late check out despite the hotel having rooms available for sale that night.
The gym is really new and great for a workout.
The restaurant staff were very friendly and breakfast on both mornings was really good quality and very fairly priced.
This certainly wasn’t a bad stay, and the location and room was great. My diamond status wasn’t mentioned, but I’m pretty sure it secured me an upgrade.
We stayed in Portland for three days as an add on to our trip. As a first time trip to the city - we absolutely loved Portland and will be back.

Thank you for taking the time to provide us with your detailed feedback. We're glad to hear that you appreciated the recent renovations, plush carpets, and the overall ambiance of our rooms, along with the historic charm of our building and the enjoyable bar experience. It's wonderful that the views from your room added a special touch to your stay, and that our gym facilities met your workout needs. However, we're truly disheartened to learn that aspects of our service did not meet your expectations, particularly at reception and with room service. We aim to provide exceptional service to all our guests, and it's clear we missed the mark during your visit. Your experience with the bell service and the lack of acknowledgment of your diamond status are not reflective of the high standards we strive to uphold. We take your comments seriously and will address these issues directly with our team to ensure we improve and provide the level of service you and all our guests deserve. We're pleased to know that you enjoyed the restaurant staff's friendliness and the quality of our breakfast offerings. It's encouraging to hear that, despite some shortcomings, your stay was overall positive and that you fell in love with Portland. We hope to have the opportunity to welcome you back on your next visit, aiming to provide you with a flawless experience that truly reflects our commitment to excellence. Warmest regards, The Benson Team

In all honesty, I was a bit nervous to stay downtown in Portland for a Conference we had for work. But in the end, it turns out this was one of the BEST decisions we ever made. The hotel was always clean with tons of history within. It was built in 1912 but the rooms are so updated and modern you wouldn't even notice. The lobby is grand and inviting, the staff is incredibly friendly and attentive. The hotel restaurant had amazing food. Hello to John and Bobby! They were some of the best waiters we could have asked for. They single handedly made us feel like welcomed, old friends and their stories have become apart of my experience as well. The HOTEL ROOM! Wow. It was amazing. I had an upgrade for my hotel room to a suite and the view was still stunning. The bed was incredibly comfortable and clean. The bathroom is not large, maybe some would say small, but for me, it was perfect. For food, there is an amazing pizza place just three blocks down (across the street from the sports bar, go left three blocks) and it's next to Powell's famous bookstore. I only learned of this amazing location the last day so we didn't get to do. Don't miss your chance to check it out! I felt very safe walking during the day, even with the location having a few homeless around if you venture too far passed the sports bar. If you're staying at the hotel for the Convention Center, get an Uber. Don't try to walk it or use the metro. Uber pickups during the day weren't badly priced at all. Overall, it was a great stay and I wouldn't want to stay anymore else when I do go back. You won't regret staying here either! PS - Don't forget to check out their stairwell museum if you can. It made me appreciate The Benson even more with its rich history right there at your fingertips.

It’s not buffet style (thankfully) so I think you can order whatever you want off the menu and they’ll sort it out.
There are more places to choose from in the Portland area.
