Hotel's Favourite
This is a very comfortable hotel with staff who go completely out of their way to make a tired traveller feel very comfortable indeed. My corner room was huge and comfortable with everything I needed capped off with the most comfy bed I've slept in for weeks and fully working A/C [weirdly not a given these days]. Kitchenette was handy. Wine and cheese a delight. The hotel is close to Powells, has good transport connections and food choices near by.
The staff they were great. Well starting with the man who came to the cab to get my bag into the hotel. Check in itself was efficient and friendly. The cleaner always greeted me and the guy who served wine and cheese coped with me. Advice from the front of house staff was useful - especially that from Anthony.
Well recommended.

We got a king room with a kitchenette and it was great to be able to fix some meals in the room. This hotel is very charming and the location is unbeatable for walking around downtown or towards the Pearl and 23rd Street shopping areas. They have a wine reception for free every evening and the seating was in a little room that looked like a bricked courtyard in Europe. Our bed was super comfy. The other great thing about this hotel was the parking - it was only $25 a day for self-park in a secured garage with in and out privileges. We didn't use our car until we left, but this is a great rate. Other hotels were charging $50 a day and parking was valet, which adds on a tip. The service was wonderful - the front desk checked to see how things were and they answered questions about nearby clubs and restaurants (such as whether a coat check was available at a performance venue). It felt like they really cared about meeting all our needs. I would highly recommend this hotel.

We had a great time staying for 3 nights with our dog. We took a king corner unit, very clean, bright with a large with a kitchenette, comfortable sofa sleeper in case you have additional people, a writing desk, and a plenty of space. We got a welcome package for our dog with treats and a foldable water bowl.
The breakfast is excellent in comparison to many continental ones we've had at same level hotels. We had access to the wine happy hour and the fresh cookies/tea/coffee everyday.
Our overall experience was excellent, and this hotel has the best location in downtown at walking distance to all interesting landmarks and restaurants. They offer parking for $25/night but you can easily find street overnight parking around the hotel.

I travelled to Portland with my sister to visit another sister who lives in the Alphabet District. We choose this hotel for it's excellent price, value (included breakfast & wine & cheese etc.) and it's extremely central location. My sister's place in the Alphabet District was only a 15 minute walk away and Powell's was literally around the corner! We went on many walks and I can't stress how convenient and central the location.
We had a top floor corner suite and it was huge, probably at least 600 square feet with two queen beds and a separate seating area and even a small kitchenette with two burner stove top and bar sized fridge. The beds were comfy and although Downtown Portland is loud, the windows blocked almost all noise. My only real gripe with the property is how tiny the bathroom was, there was literally no room to hang clothes, stow things away or change in there. It was surprisingly small given the size of the room. Also, the living area furniture was quite dated and uncomfortable and surprising given the size of the suite and the inclusion of a kitchen area, there was no table to eat at. Honestly, if it were just the room I'd probably only give the property a 4 star review but...
Every day at 3pm they put out delicious cookies. From 4:30 to 5:30 they sample really nice wines (the days we were there they always had one red and one white) these aren't box wines like some manager's receptions but tasty local wines. They also deliver the New York Times to your hotel door every morning! The free breakfast is continental and though simple, there were tasty croissant, yogurts, fruit salad and make your own avocado toast! They have a pretty fancy automatic latte/espresso machine which was nice but I prefer drip coffee and it wasn't as tasty as everything else. Parking is in a garage and $25.00 which actually isn't bad for a big city.
The staff here were all friendly and helpful and we only paid $145 a night which was a bargain for such a large suite right Downtown. Other than the small bathroom I was very impressed by the property.

I am a frequent traveler and used to live in Portland and have stayed in many of the hotels downtown. This was my first time at the Mark Spencer and it was fabulous. The rooms are spacious and tastefully decorated, NY Times every morning, efficient and courteous staff. Small details showed that they really pay attention to and care about each guest. When housecleaning made up the room each day they didn't just clean, but noticed details about my preferences - left the TV remote where I had been using it, removed the excess pillows I had stacked on the floor, etc. This was one of my best hotel experiences.

The location is amazing. Powell books is a block away, Broadway is a couple blocks. We walked everywhere. There is a closed-off street right next to the hotel full of outside restaurant seating. It’s even an easy walk to the alphabet district and across the river if you like. I also didn’t feel worried to let the older three wander. I sent the 18 yo to Whole Foods on her own at 8:30pm, and the 16/13 year old took off on foot for a game store across the river. We are in Seattle now, and I’m quite certain I wouldn’t have felt comfortable doing that here.
We came as a family. One mom, 4 teens/tweens (ages 18, 16, 13, 11). The kitchenette was great so that we didn’t have to eat every meal out and/or didn’t have to use plastic silverware/utensils because plates and silverware were available, as was dish soap, dish washing cloths, and towels. Coffee was provided by office staff each morning. And although this place was covid-careful and wouldn’t “make-up” our room during the day while we were out, they weren’t ridiculous and would fill my travel coffee mug with coffee.
The rooms were quiet and cozy with plenty of space. We did not hear any other guest or street noise during our stay. There’s really nowhere to set anything in the bathroom, and there’s no table to sit at for eating. Parking is simply across the street in a small, visible lot.

My wife, two teen sons, our dog, and I spent two nights at the MSH. The room had a sitting room (with a kitchenette, pull out bed, and TV) and a second bedroom with two queen beds and TV. Both rooms were on the small side for four people and a dog, but we adjusted. Both were comfortable, and the bathroom fixtures were very cool. (While I'm talking about bathrooms, you must check out the bathroom on the hotel's first floor. It has an electric toilet that warms up the seat and pops open as you approach. Very cool.)
Front desk staff were all friendly and helpful, with coffee in the morning for guests, and an added bonus that the owner roasts his own coffee. It was one of the best cups of coffee I've had ever, and I've drunk a LOT of coffee. The concierge was charming and knowledgeable, and got to know us almost immediately.
The hotel is one block from Powells, two blocks from Whole Foods and Starbucks, half a block from Stump Coffee, with lots of eateries nearby. The hotel has underground parking that's easily accessible, and plenty of luggage carts in the lobby area. Also washers & dryers in the basement, which were especially nice as it rained (as in rained-rained, not PNW misty sweet dew drops on your cheeks rain, but rain that wants to soak you to the bone and then laugh at you) most of the time we were there, and the dryer came in handy.
If you're looking for a Sheraton-type experience with a jacuzzi in your ensuite, then this isn't the place for you. The rooms are small, with a view of a close adjoining brick wall, and the elevators are almost comically small. But, if you're charmed by older updated places with a great location, friendly staff, and funky local feel, this is a great place. We plan to stay again.

We just got back from a three-night stay in Portland at the Mark Spencer hotel. We were so happy to find a reasonably priced hotel that was pet-friendly. Our dog was greeted with a little welcome package that included the names and addresses of a vet and pet food store (a very nice touch). We had a deluxe corner King suite with a kitchenette which was perfect for prepping our dogs food and when we ordered dinner in one night.
The wine and cheese reception each night was also delightful. Every night there is a featured red and white from either Oregon or Washington and nice quality wines.
The hotel is very centrally located in the downtown area of Portland, so lots of shopping and restaurants around.
The only negative at all about our stay was the trolley cars that run right by the front of the hotel. This is something that obviously the hotel can't control, but if you're a light sleeper you might want to ask for a room on the backside of the hotel. But we didn't find it too bothersome as the trolley stops running around 11:30pm and doesn't start again until 7am, so they don't go all night or anything.
Beds were comfy, robes they supplied were also perfect. Will definitely stay here when in Portland again.

I would absolutely stay at the Mark Spencer hotel again. We had a king sized room with kitchenette. The kitchenette was well-stocked with plates and utensils and we were able to make breakfast for ourselves after purchasing groceries from Whole Foods 3 blocks away. The hotel is 2 blocks away from Powell’s book store and within minutes of walking from many great restaurants and breweries like Deschutes. We didn’t have a car and public transportation was easy to use with stops for the bus and street car only 5 min away from the hotel, which provided an easy and affordable commute to the airport. The staff was friendly and helpful and we were able to drop our luggage off early before check-in while we explored the area. Great stay, highly recommend.

The Hotel is a great location, however there were a few problems, the Wifi in our room was spotty at best, and we would have to reload and sometimes re-enter the address and password. The door our room was left open, I assume by the cleaning staff, which is a bit disturbing, The shower gel bottle in the shower was empty, and not filled during our stay. the wine tasting is one white and one red, which is fine but starts at 4:30 and ends at 5:30, which is hard to make from a day of meetings. the location is great and the parking in convenient, but is an additional $25 per night

Thank you for staying with us and for taking the time to share your experience. We are terribly sorry that your stay was met with some unusual and unacceptable circumstances. Returning to you room to find your door ajar is disconcerting to say the least and not having shower gel replaced in your room in also unacceptable. These issues have been addressed today with our full housekeeping team and are certainly not the norm for our hotel. We have recently invested in all new WiFi Switches and access points throughout the hotel with a new service provider and most responses have been incredibly positive; however, it is possible that additional troubleshooting and testing of our service must be done. We have contacted the service provider and this testing begin immediately to rectify the issues you experienced. Please accept our sincere apologies as our goal is to provide comfortable, secure accommodations with great service and amenities.

Yes it is. I felt comfortable walking around. The area is very clean, no trash on the street, no homeless that I could see. I have to admit, from what I seen about Portland, I was a little apprehensive about staying downtown, but the location of the Mark Spencer is like staying in a different world. There were some great restaurants around the area. Jake's famous crawfish, McMenamins, Cheryl's on 12th. There is a cute little wine shop around the corner on 13th called Pacific Northwest Beer & Wine. If you don't mind walking, there is a great place called Von Ebert Brewing that we ate at. It's a great little area.
6:30a.m. until about 10:00 AM (not sure about the exact end time whether or not you can take food back to the room). Some guest rooms have kitchenettes, and the breakfast area has plenty of seating.
