I drive past the Wiltshire hotel almost on a daily basis and have always thought it looks like a great place for a weekend getaway. A few weeks ago I invited my partner’s family to come from London and stay at the Wiltshire, the blokes can enjoy a game of golf while the ladies are using the leisure facilities. My partner sorted out the bookings for everyone, we quickly received confirmation emails where we were advised that as guests of the hotel we get a complementary use of the leisure facilities. Went to the website of the Wiltshire trying to book tee time, unfortunately we were unable to book anything. The website wasn’t specifying why there are absolutely no tee times available. The day of our check-in came and here is where the horror story begins. After check-in we were told that the local golf club has booked the golf course for the days we were staying at the hotel and we can only book a tee time after 3pm on the day we were supposed to check-out (11am). After check-in we are also told that the leisure facilities are out if order and we cannot use any of them. I mentioned the confirmation email that advises of complementary use of the leisure facilities to which the lady on reception shrugged her shoulders and said that they “cannot fix their website”. The rooms were like a time machine that takes you back to the 70s (not in a good way) the shower in our room would spray more water on the ceiling rather than on the person taking a shower and the bed looked like it is broken in the middle. My nan needed a room for disabled people due to having mobility difficulties and was given a room where she couldn’t even get in the shower due to the shower having a big step she couldn’t get over. The bar/restaurant area is quite nice in contrast with the rest of the hotel. However, the food at dinner was not great either. Our dinner order was wrong and we were told we have to wait 30 to 40 minutes to get the food we ordered to which we canceled the dinner order and got a portion of chips. The chips were nice! The bar would serve a pint of beer then will run out of it if you try to order again. More than half of the draft beers weren’t available. At the end of our first day my nan went to reception hoping she would be able to give some feedback to the hotel managers of how poor our experience was thus far and we should have been made aware of the facilities that are not available prior to paying upwards of £150. She was advised she doesn’t need to speak with the manager and the receptionist “will get in touch” with the website where we booked our stay and ask them to issue a refund. As mentioned we spent upwards of £150 for 2 nights stay to stay in the room or in the bar of the hotel as no other facilities were available to use. During our check-out we asked the same reception staff member if there is any update to our situation to which she said “I am too busy and I haven’t contacted anyone yet”. The receptionist asked us to leave our contact details saying she will contact us in a week, it has been almost 3 weeks since our stay at the Wiltshire and we haven’t been contacted yet. We will not get a compensation for the bad experience, this is clear. I wanted to share our experience of the establishment and to advise against staying there because it is not worth it.

The purpose of this visit was to meet up with two good friends to catch up. The Wiltshire was the perfect venue. It was clean, welcoming and nothing was too much trouble for any of the staff and what a great team they were. It was a relaxing and friendly place serving good food in tastefully decorated surroundings. A big thank you to all the staff for making our stay so enjoyable. We plan to return next year.

My friends and I chose this venue for an overnight stay due to its location which suited us driving from different directions. It suited our needs perfectly, but what made it special was the friendliness of the staff. They were sensitive to our situation and nothing was too much trouble for them. The rooms were clean and provided everything we needed. We had lunch and dinner - both were very tasty. I have no hesitation in recommending this venue. We will return for future reunions, I’m sure.

Our comments are based on the committment and helpfulness of the hotel manager, David Warburton and his staff. Throughout the last unprecedented months of having to rearrange our wedding, David has been amazing with us. He assured us we would have the best day of our lives, and he certainly didn't let us down! The table settings were beautiful and just as we had requested. All of our guests agreed their meal was delicious and served nice and hot. Throughout the day and evening David was never far away from us just in case we, or our guests wanted anything. A large group of us had requested Sunday lunch the following day in the restaurant and once again the food was delicious. A huge thank you to David Warburton and his staff for ensuring our special day was one to remember. Exceptional value!
