Detailed Reviews
We just stayed one night here, but will definitely return. We received a warm welcome and we were able to order lunch at 3.30pm (they serve food all day). There is a slight wait for food as it is all cooked to order, and from local fare. It is worth the wait. Lyndsey is a very good cook/chef. She further proved this at breakfast the following morning.
An earlier review stated that everyone turned and stared when they walked in - we did not find this at all, in fact we were tempted to miss our evening arrangements and stay with the very welcoming and chatty locals (and their dogs). Maybe next time. The pub is an older building so whilst the room we stayed in was small, it was thoughtfully furnished and the ensuite though not luxurious, was entirely sufficient. I believe that this is reflected in the reasonable price for accommodation. The view was wonderful and the bed is one of the comfiest we have slept in. so I would highly recommend.

Fantastic pub/B&B. We stayed 2 nights and received such a warm welcome after traveling for over 6hrs. The room was lovely, fully equipped with tea & coffee, fluffy towels, and comfy beds. The evening menu is good old pub food, all freshly cooked and sourced locally. Mark & Lindsay work so hard, and make you feel welcome. Breakfast was 10 out of 10!

Regular traveler between London and the Highlands, the area around Richmond / Barnard Castle is a perfect overnight stop and I prefer to support local businesses. Found the Shoulder of Mutton on Google search and loved the name. Stayed there last week: tasty dinner, great draft ale, comfortable room, and a hearty breakfast with super friendly hosts and regulars. And what a view!

Went for lunch and was amazed by the quality of food presented. We chose from the lunchtime two course special where the portions were were a good size and the syrup sponge pudding the nicest I've had in a long time. The staff were really friendly and helpful and we sat outside overlooking a spectacular view of the countryside. In the words of Arnold Schwarzenegger "We'll be back".

Booked for lunch sat outside in the car park - disabled can't do steps. Wonderful food, service and sunny warm weather with a fab view across the valley and Ravensworth. New owners but the quality of food is still as good as ever it was. Well done to you and your staff!

We stayed here for the second time and it didn’t disappoint!.
The owners are a lovely couple who go above and beyond to ensure you are well looked after. They even cooked us a meal for our dog as we had forgotten the dog food.
I’d strongly recommend staying and eating here! Very impressed

You can tell all the meat comes from Stoneygate Farm, it is top quality. The steak was delicious and just melted in my mouth. We started with sharing nachos with chilli which like all the food was excellent, and we ended up fighting over the last morsels. The social distancing worked well and we felt very comfortable in our first meal out since lockdown. It will not be long until we go back! Thanks Matt and Kirsty, a lovely meal.

Three of us stayed overnight at this delightful inn while on a motorcycling trip. Great location with splendid ale and food. The steak from the local farm shop is a must! Thanks Matt and Kirsty for your hospitality!
