Detailed Reviews
I opted to stay at a nearby hotel after a late flight into Pittsburgh. I booked a room at Sonesta for a decent rate through my vacation club. I can’t say that i had any issues or negative experience. Noise and cleanliness is always a concern for me, especially in hotels that allow pets. My room was a bit dated in terms of decor but it was clean. I also didn’t have any noise issues. The checkin area was small and tight but the employees I encountered during checkin and checkout were all nice and helpful. The fridge, microwave and burner were convenient for late night snacks. This accommodation definitely served its purpose for me.

Check-in was smooth and the guy working the counter was very helpful. I had a maintenance issue with the bathtub filling up. I mentioned it to the same person at the front desk and the problem was fixed later that day. The room was nicely appointed with a cooktop, dishes and free laundry. The guy working the counter when I checked out was terrible. When I walked up to the counter, he just looked at me not saying anything. Then he mumbled something which I had to ask him to repeat. Outside of that experience, I would stay at the hotel again.

As my career takes me all over the world, I am used to many varieties of accommodations and am thoroughly impressed with Candlewood Suites, so far!
GETTING HERE:
From Pittsburgh's airport, I used my own Garmin System (something a true Road-Warrior can't live without) and followed the directions to the hotel. It's simple- head out on I-60 and take exit 1 to the right. Follow about .5 miles and take Chauvet Dr. on the left. Follow curve around to the right and you will arrive at Candlewood, on your right.
CHECK-IN:
Easy and fast. I booked and paid for my room online, so check in was a breeze. I was briefed on the location of the fitness room, their honor-system convenience store and laundry facility and headed to my room.
THE ROOMS:
How can you go wrong with a La-Z-Boy chair, a DVD/VCR player (you can borrow media from the front desk), a CD-alarm clock, voice-mail, free Internet/fax/voice-mail and local calls, a microwave, fridge, stove-top and cabinets stocked with pots, pans, dishes, silverware, coffee/tea, Coffeemate, etc....???!! Color me impressed, Candlewood seems to have thought of it all. Ample closet space, good work area (though lighting leaves a bit to be desired, at least it is not flourescent!) and the bathroom is roomy and has lots of cabinets to put your things away in.
A small variety of bath items are complimentary (facial soap, body soap and conditioning shampoo). Anything else you may need is likely available at their Country Cupboard- a 24-hour "honor system" convenience store located on the first floor, within their fitness center and laundry room. I happened upon some "complimentary" items in the Cupboard- a comb and a razor. Not sure if that's pretty much standard, but I needed a razor, so it was a good thing!
The bed is definitely small and the comforter is old, but the mattress is firm and that usually lends itself to a peaceful night's rest.
OTHER INFO
This "honor sytem" convenience store simply means- you choose your items (all of which are very reasonably priced~ a can of soup might run you $3, but a bottle of water is $1) and write down what you bought. Priority Club members have the benefit of claiming a free USA Today each day. They also have To-Go bags, so you can load up breakfast, lunch and snacks and be on your merry way.
The fitness center is fairly basic- with weight machines, treadmills and the like. Apparently, Candlewood has arranged a deal with a more extensive local gym- ask at the Front Desk if you require more "oomph!" in your workout.
The laundry machines are free to use. I can't even begin to tell you how awesome that is. Fresh, clean clothes on the road are a true Godsend!
Parking is ample and the area around the hotel is full of conveniences like Target, Barnes and Noble and Wal-Mart and other extended-stay type of hotels. There are lots of places to grab a quick bite to eat, as well as sit-down bar & grills, as well.
The hotel is safe and has a large contingent of National Guardsmen and women staying here, which makes it feel very safe!
Overall- can't beat the ammenities for the money. If you have to come to Pittsburgh, especially on business, this is definitely worth a look!

-i am sure there are better choices in the Pittsburgh airport area. they are following Covid safety protocols thankfully. this hotel was obviously an even lower budget hotel or apartments until recently. still only a banner with the new name over the entry sign. dealt with 3 quite unprofessional employees during our 1 night here.
at check-in, a young man wearing street clothes & a backpack(!) came up front to serve us. he seemed to know what he was doing but i did have to ask questions regarding things that normally are passed on to a customer upon checking in. another older man came up during this time to assist though we were done with our conversation by then.
the building interior & carpet (1st floor) were worn & the hallway quite narrow. the room was better than i felt it would be but still a bit worn. the appliances were nice. but who has a hotel room these days without at least 1 luggage stand? how hard is this to provide?
a bit after arrival, my wife checked her CC online to see that we were charged the expected rate. it showed a charge $25 more than our details from Hotels. i went to the desk to ask about this. the same young man who checked us in was there & i chose to ask about the luggage rack. he did not seem to know what this was but i heard a loud voice from the back say "no we don't have those". i assume from the other man. extra charge was for incidentals but we were never told this was done. checkout was a problem also. a different young man in street clothes said he could not provide me with a receipt despite the fact we had not paid our third party booker but were to be charged at checkout by the hotel. after a bit of back and forth and some time he finally gave me three pages of unnecessary info along with our bill. we won't return here and may avoid Sonesta entirely. this location needs to train & uniform your employees to provide a more professional environment.

On by three occasions i had to walk past, stand near and jump out of an elevator to avoid patrons without masks when a hotel employee was in view and said nothing to the inconsiderate patrons. There were several other times I also saw people walking around int he hotel without masks, the hotel is nice and appeared clean but the employees were completely unwilling to enforce the corporate mask policy. I will it stay here again even after the pandemic ends on principle.

It was quiet, at first. Pot smell in the parking lot? Meh, you do you. The lobby is dingy and not like any Sonesta I have ever stayed in. Carpet on the first floor was worn and dirty. Filled out paperwork by hand. FDA was nice.
There was dog urine in the elevator. Stayed on the second floor. The room was spacious and clean. Went to sleep. Woken at 2am by puppies squealing. Heard a person run down the hallway and go into the room next to mine (puppies immediately became quiet). Dogs barked on and off from that point forward. Entire second floor hallway smelled of dog/dog urine. I have 4 dogs, I thought I was nose blind. Apparently I am not. Must not have noticed on checkin. I was exhausted.
I’ve used Sonesta for personal and business travels in Chicago and NY. Never had this happen. Never again. Embarrassed as I had a colleague with me. Back to Hilton we go.

I stayed in the 1-bedroom suite with my husband and 2 teen daughters which was okay for the price. However, when I voiced my dissatisfaction in how I was treated and asked to speak with a supervisor. I was lied to and threatened by staff. This is how you treat your customers?
Or only the ones of a different race?
DO NOT STAY HERE! Samantha @ the front desk lied and Greg the General Manager backed her up with a condescending attitude and further lies. Obviously they have no skills in customer service and ethics! And when I wrote my review on Facebook and supported it with facts, they removed it. I have never dealt with such lack of integrity and mistreatment in my life.
However when I called to file a complaint with the Guest Relations via Candlewood's National line, I was treated with the utmost respect. Do yourself a favor and go to another Candlewood Suites - AVOID THIS LOCATION AT ALL COST - unless the owner wises up and fire these two!

Our management and staff are aware of this circumstance. There are two sides to the story. This guest disagreed with our policy requiring a valid credit card to stay at our property. We explained guests are able to pay cash for their stay, it is not a problem. She felt she was being treated unfairly and suspected race was a factor. This couldn't be further from the truth. When being loud and irate didn't work - she asked to speak to a Manager. Our desk associate was the Manager on Duty. Speaking to the General Manager or someone at our corporate offices was not going to change the outcome of this transaction. Justin, our General Manager did end up calling to speak directly to the guest. When he was finally able to speak, he said it would be best for all parties concerned for her to lodge elsewhere. We pride ourselves on being kind and service oriented to every guest who enters our hotel. In most circumstances we err on the side of the traveler. Our General Manager made a suggestion based on what was best for the greater good – our other guests and his staff. Shannon Rizzo Director of Sales

We arrived at the Candlewood Suites hoping to find a friendly, welcoming atmosphere and a staff that would try to accomodate our requests. We got none of that. We booked a handicapped accessible suite because that's all that they had available at the time that was non-smoking. We didn't want a handicapped accessible suite as we felt that they should be saved for those that need them. When we arrived the desk clerk stated that they still didn't have any other non-smoking suites. My wife then asked if we could view one of the smoking suites to see if we could tolerate it and leave the handicapped accessible one for someone who truly needed it. The desk clerk wouldn't even show us one of the smoking suites and insisted that we stay in the suite that we reserved. It was late and we didn't want to argue so we agreed.
The lobby - if that's what you want to call it is small and cramped. It was not inviting at all nor was the individual who was working the desk that night.
When we arrived in the room we were greeted by what appeared to be Walmart furniture (and low-end Walmart furniture at that). The place could really use updating and some finer furnishings. We weren't looking for Waldorf Astoria type furnishings but something other than particle board would have been nice.
Air conditioning was another issue. The air conditioning unit is in the main room with a little tiny vent into the bedroom. Because of this set up, my mother (who was traveling with us) froze just so that the bedroom was reasonably comfortable. Again - VERY poor design.
The bed in the bedroom was anything but comfortable and appeared to be quite old.
Ammenities were scarce in the bathroom and we were never given the option of having the room cleaned any of the 3 days that we were there.
I'm only willing to give this place a rating of 2 because it was reasonably convenient and in a quiet location.
Given the choice, I would not stay here again and would not recommend it to others.

Dear NY_Traveler_13126, Thank you for taking the time to tell us about your recent experience. I'm sorry to hear that you did not enjoy your stay with us. During our busy times, as we are in right now, handicapped accessible suites are the very last thing we sell in order to accommodate anyone that may need those specific rooms types. We always try and honor the specific type of room that you choose at booking. I apologize they did not show you a smoking room, many times our smoking rooms sell out very quickly as we only have 12 of them. We mostly cater to extended stay guests and our housekeeping regime is catered to give those guests their privacy. We offer housekeeping once a week if guests are here 7 or more days, again I'm sorry this was not explained to you at time of check in. If you would like to discuss your stay further please feel free to contact me directly at the hotel. Thank you again for choosing the Candlewood Suites Pittsburgh. Kind Regards, April J General Manager

Are there even smoking rooms in hotels anymore? I guess so. Checked in tonight and that is all they had - and staying on a work trip so I can't leave. Terrible. Don't advertise having non smoking rooms available if you don't have them.

Stayed two nights. Very nice staff. Clean room with the things I seek: A good chair, a good desk, a coffee pot that makes 4 cups instead of 2, refrigerator with ice maker, TV and DVD plus a free DVD library off the lobby. Add in snacks on the honor system and a good workout room and what more could you want? If you need a fancy lobby, or a high end furniture in the room, you probably would be happier paying more but getting less (but it will be fancier). Price was below the usual suspects' prices. I note the complaints about hallway carpets, but they looked new to me. May have been refurbished since those folks stayed.
