adequate really sums it up well. enjoyed the location and proximity to the water and quieter neighborhoods while still being close to King street attractions. rooms felt dingy and décor was cheap, bathrooms however were nice and the beds were comfortable.

The pros? The Elliot House Inn enjoys a prime location, very convenient to restaurants, shops and many of Charleston’s destination-worthy neighborhoods. Also, the Inn itself is sort of charming, in a dilapidated, almost decrepit, kind of way. And the bed was comfortable. The cons? Virtually everything else. At check-in, the clerk advised (threatened?) me that the place is unstaffed overnight, until 7am. No big deal I thought until the bathroom door locked itself shut, leaving us “stranded” when nature made it’s daily call at 6:30. The bathroom was tiny, featuring a sink that was in no hurry to drain and a glass shelf hung akimbo from the wall, causing our toiletries to slide to the floor. Our room — albeit large — was cheaply, sparsely and generally oddly furnished. Putting it together the hotel itself deserves a 4-star rating for location and a one-star rating as a place to spend the night. Putting it all together I’ll be generous and give it a 3-star rating. But I’ll never be back.

I'm glad that you enjoyed the location. As you mentioned, we are located right in the middle of Charleston's Historic District. Sunday-Thursday we do not have anyone stationed at the front desk, but we have an after-hours number where someone can get to you very quickly if you have any issues. Furthermore, we are located right across the street from the Charleston County/Federal Parking Garage, there are about a hundred cameras in the parking deck, trust me, you are in one of the most safe and secure areas in Charleston. All the bathrooms are a little smaller than typical hotel rooms because it is built into an old house. At the end of the day, I'm sorry that we did not meet your expectations. Very cool historic boutique hotel. It has- great courtyard for morning coffee. There is an in-house historian who can provide tips on walking through the beautiful historic district. A great restaurant, 82 Queen, is next door.

While we enjoyed our stay in Charleston, the Elliott House did not meet our expectations. The location was great and within walking distance of everything we wanted to see. The staff was nice and helpful when we had questions or needed help. We reserved what I thought was a room with a small private balcony that over looked the courtyard (based on the pictures on the website). We got a corner room where we smelled smoke from the Husk restuarant smoking their meat and heard music beginning early in the morning with warming up and until 11:00 pm - end of the party. We also were awkened after midnight to the sound of the dance floor being slammed down and stacked or tables and chairs that continued for about an hour. While the small kitchen area was nice, there were not any paper products or even dish rags or cloths. We were not prepared to not have those items and had to purchase some for our use. No wine openener or beer opener. The cheese tray was nothing more than a few cubes of cheddar and pepper jack, a few slices of pepperoni and about a 1/2 sleeve of ritz crackers and some grapes. It looked nothing like the picture that was shown when I added it to our room. In no way worth the extra $20.00 I paid. We were also a little disappointed that coffee was not provided Saturday night as it had been on Thursday and Friday evenings, and there was no coffe pot in the room for us to make our own. I understand COVID has made changes to amenities, but what was missing could have still been provided. I am not sure we will stay at the Elliott house in the future.

Thank you for taking the time to write about your recent stay with us. I'm glad that the staff was very friendly and helped you throughout your stay. We do our best to ensure that the staff is there to help in any way that we can. Some of the rooms do have private patios or balconies, but not all of them. I would recommend that any guest that wants a backdoor patio or balcony, to call ahead to see if we have any available. We only have a few of them for the entire property, so we cannot guarantee that you will get one. I wish you would have let us known that you would have liked coffee and we could have made some especially for you. We have someone staffed here on Friday and Saturday all day, so we are more than happy to provide coffee anytime you would like it on the weekends. Unfortunate this was by far the worst hotel experience we’ve ever had, because location was great. Roaches, paper thin walls, and staff who either lied to or laziness in finding the answer- told us pillows were synthetic (daughter has severe allergy to feathers), which they were not. So after a night of sleeping on rolled up shirts, the next day we had to buy our own pillows for the remainder of our stay (staff response, “oh sorry about that”). Lastly, the website states agreement with neighboring restaurant for dining but discovered at dinner, this agreement does not exist... again, staff just said “oh well they should”.

I am sorry that you did not enjoy your stay with us and that you felt that you could not talk to our management staff about your displeasure during your stay. We could have found you another room or an alternative location for you that would have been better suited to your needs. For future and potential guests, we will never charge you for the nights that you do not stay if you checkout by our departure time at 11:00 AM or if you walk into the room and just feel like we are not going to be suited for you. I understand that we are built into an older home that was built in the 1860s, and for those that have allergies or are sensitive smells, this may not be the place for you to stay. That being said, I want to address two of the larger issues in this review. First, all the rooms have pillows that have an inside layer of duck feathers and the outer layer is polyester. The inside layer that is duck feather has been spread with a sanitizing spray. After reading this review, we reached out to our representative to ensure us this was the case, and they sent us the information from the manufacturer to clarify that these pillows had been sanitized. I am sorry if your daughter had a reaction to the pillow. We have been using this company for over three years and have had numerous guests call saying that they were allergic to feather pillows, and have never had an issue. If this reviewer would like to reach out to us to get the information that the representative provider for us, I am more than happy to share the information if that helps ease your mind. As of father of two myself, and having a child with a per-existing condition, I understand the level of concern and take it very seriously. So, to be honest, it is uncouth to openly state that the staff was lazy or lied about the pillows when you did not even attempt to reach out to anyone on our management team about the situation. If you would like to speak to me about that I can be reached at ncook@elliotthouseinn.com or Tuesday-Saturday, 8 AM- 2:30 PM at (843) 518-6500. For future and potential guests, please address any issues that you may have prior to checking out because what is the point of not enjoying your vacation and being upset? Next, 82 Queen Restaurant next door does provide service for the Inn. They will provide room service for us from 5:00-6:00 PM, and 8:30 PM until their kitchen closes. Charleston has been so busy that many restaurants have posted outside their doors to be patient because they are short-staffed and it is difficult for them to meet the high demands and to provide the quality service that you deserve. That being said, it was nobody’s intention to be misleading. At the end of the day, I take responsibility that our staff did not provide you the answers that you were looking for during your stay. However, many of these issues and concerns could have simply been addressed during your stay on Saturday morning when I was here. I would have been more than happy to discount your stay or discuss what we are doing to help ensure that our guest enjoy themselves or feel comfortable in letting us know that we have not met their expectations. I’m just truly sorry that your daughter and you did not enjoy your time with us in Charleston! For future and potential guests, I do hope that if an issues arises that our staff does not properly address or feels like it can be handled differently that you asked one of them to contact myself or the General Manager for further assistance. I know myself and the General Manager, do our best to make ourselves available to make your stay as enjoyable as possible. The mass majority of reviews state how impressed they are with our staff and their willingness to help, even if they did not necessarily fully enjoy the property. This is why, I take the comments about my team very seriously, and truly do not appreciate disrespectful comments directed at employees that are simply trying to do the best they can to provide our customers with excellent service.
